I think I'm going to start a countdown to February 27, which is the day Free Agency starts.

My major objection to taking Floyd or any WR in round 1 is less about "character concerns" (who among us didn't booze it up in college and/or foolishly drive when we shouldn't have? I certainly did. Unless you went to BYU, I'd say you're lying if you answered "never" to those two things) than it is about the simple mechanics and historical experiences of the situation.

WR is definitely a major need. It can be dealt with very effectively in FA and down-draft. Mid-1st round WR picks are fickle and unlikely to have significant rookie year impacts.

DE is a major need too (a little less pressing IMO). There are also options here in FA and possibly in rounds 1-2 that could help pretty quickly.

OT is also a huge need (as much as WR IMO). FA options are very limited and any pick beyond round 1 is probably just a depth/developmental pick only as far as 2012 goes.

Bottom line: As a "fantasy GM", I pass on Floyd and Jeffery even if they light it up at the Combine. I sign the best FA WR I can afford as a 2012 starter and draft a prospect (#2-3) or even a second (#4-6) for the future. I also pick up a vet safety and either a CB or LB for depth in FA. If a Pass rushing DE is possible, I'm willing to forgo the previous as well, but probably won't happen. In the draft, I focus hard on getting an OT "of today and the future" in round 1. That may involve trading up with a 3rd round pick. Rather not, but if needed, so be it. My vague plan would be...
    1] Reiff/Martin/Adams (OT)
    2] Vinny Curry/Andre Branch (DE)
    3a] traded?
3b] Brian Quick? (whoever BPA big man WR)
    4] BPA CB
    5] BPA LB
    6-7] BPAs

Agree. And what better way for Emery to show he means business than trading up in the 1st rd and getting the LT that this team needs more than anything else. A WR does no good if the QB never has the time to get him the damn ball.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

The trouble is there's a limit to how far we can trade up without it getting too costly. With a third round pick we can get to about 15 or 16 and that's it. You won't find Reiff there and probably not Martin but maybe Adams will last that long. Trading away any more than that jeopardizes the ability to draft other positions of need.

I too thought that free-agency began on March 13th, 2012?? I actually just heard them say it on NFL Network not even two hours ago.

Assuming we do not get a free agent WR, how would you all feel about possibly dropping a few spots, gaining a pick (3rd or so) and taking Alshon? I know this is not the dream scenario, but I, for one, like Jeffrey better than Floyd, and I think he could be had a few spots later, say 22-24ish. What say ye?

Personally I'd rather have him at #19 than I would Floyd but your scenario is something I've thought about. You never know how it will work out on draft day but in the past there has been somewhat of a herd mentality at times. If a run starts on OT's teams start jumping in that pond when the might be expected to.

If Emery has targeted a lineman on either side of the ball that he likes and that guy isn't there and he doesn't like what is there I could see him trading back for a better value pick and talking another 3rd rounder for it. I think we'll know more about some of these guys after the Combine and that may help to line them up as far as ranking them goes but until free agency is over it will still be hard to figure out what direction Emery may go with that first pick or two.

Unlike some of the other teams we've got a fairly nice purse to go FA shopping with so some issues will be solved there and that may change our priorities a lot. Right now it's all pretty raw speculation.
