The difference is that we weren't prospects to be first round draft choices in the NFL with millions of dollars due to come our way. He had two arrests for underage drinking and another for a DUI and those are the only ones we know of. So it's reasonable to ask whether or not the guy has a drinking problem because usually your first alcohol related arrest makes you a little more cautious in trying to avoid getting arrested again. In his case it didn't. A lot of alcoholics go down that path so it's a character issue that should be investigated before anyone spends a first round pick on the guy.

If it is a problem after he becomes a pro it leads to suspensions and all kinds of other nasty issues that tend to screw up careers. JJ you really can't compare the standards he'll be held to as an NFL player to those we ordinary arm chair QB's are. So we don't know if it's a problem or not but we should damn sure find out before we decide on whether or not to draft him. You can't really take it on his say so alone either. Alcoholics lie like a cheap rug.

Not taking time to read through the entire thread, just to keep in mind that rookie WRs and rookie QBs are more consistently making an impact in their first years, with 2 QBs and 1 WR making the pro bowl this year alone. It's not a gamble as it would've been before half the league broke Dan Marino's passing records this year and we need that big WR with sure hands. Oh, he's had a little bit of trouble with alcohol? (by his age, you'd think he'd have out grown all that). With one or two FA Wr's, and this guy, we will have 4 WRs that are light years above anything we've had since 95 and could even afford to use this dude sparingly, leading into next year. With the Salary Cap for rookies in place, there's even more incentive to take a WR.

Did you know that Floyd has been arrested twice for DUIs? Did you know that he was in trouble with the police for underage drinking? While underage drinking isn't exactly "end of the world" stuff, Floyd should have known that he was going to be under a microscope given his celebrity at Notre Dame. Given the fact that he failed miserably to live up to his university's and coaches' expectations for decent behavior, who is to say that he won't go out a day, a month, a year after he is drafted by us and tie one on and get behind the wheel of another vehicle, thus getting himself into more trouble and potentially killing someone in the process? This whole thing wreaks of Donte Stallworth all over again.

Unless I'm picking a WR in the top ten of the draft, Henry, I don't believe in the philosophy of drafting a receiver with your first overall pick. If we were further along in our team's development, maybe I would, but some on this board, and I'm one of them, believe that if you draft a WR from 11-32 in the first round, you're looking at two to three years of developing and honing that player's skills. I do think we could make good use of our pick of a WR in the second round with someone like Al Toon should he still be available by then. He is not afraid to go across the middle and catch a pass like Floyd is reported to be. My best guess is that Emery will make a play on signing a WR in free agency. I would not be shocked at all if Dwayne Bowe were to become a Chicago Bear with Emery's familiarity with him from his days in Kansas City. So, as I was saying, a good solid second round pick and a free agent signing of someone like Dwayne Bowe would solidify our receiving core when you take into account that you have Earl Bennett in the mix.

I don't question the need to draft one Henry I just question whether or not it should be Floyd at #19. He's not all that fast or elusive and he's not as tough over the middle as you'd like. I see a lot more Roy Williams in him than I see Anquan Boldin.

I guess my query is just how much talent separates Floyd from a group of second tier guy who we could pick up in round two. Guys like Toon, McNutt, Jones, Sanu, or even Ashlon Jeffery who has also dropped back into the second round on some charts. A week ago NFP had Floyd ranked as going around the #15 pick, then at #19 to us and today he's ranked at #26. All of a sudden there's a big spread opening up between Blackmon and the other WR's.

That takes me back to my original stance that top ten WR are the standouts who can make an immediate difference but after that the waters get a lot muddier. With as much emphasis as as there is on the passing game WR's should be in huge demand. Look at what Atlanta gave up to draft Julio Jones last year. Doesn't it seem strange that this WR group isn't rated all that high and that the guy who is supposedly the 2nd best WR prospect keep slipping farther down as days go by?

I just think we can find a better fit and a better value if we don't push the button too early. There's talent there but not Larry Fitzgerald or Megatron kind of talent that's all. All the more reason for finding a guy in FA who can step in and make an impact now.

I agree with you, soul. And, as such, I'm going to take this issue to task one step further. We should be drafting BPA in the first round. With the number of positions that will be available for us to pick, we should be able to get either a LT like Adams or a DE like Upshaw. G Cordy Glenn could be available to the Bears at that point in the first round, but I doubt the Bears are all the interested in picking up another hog-maulie in the middle. With Melvin Ingram now rated by WalterFootball to go at #10 to Buffalo, some of our choices have narrowed in scope due to good performances in the Senior Bowl. It's basically a "wait and ye-shall-see" moment now.
