Well Bates & Cutler have a good history as Lovie said. I like it. What do you think 4Da?

I know you didn't ask me, but I like it too. Eventhough Bates wasn't being courted by anyone and this looks like a last second hire, he was a good OC in Denver and really knows cutler's strengths and weaknesses well. I can see Tice picking his brain a lot for play design, etc.

I have been impressed with how professional Emery has been.
1. Firing Ruskell and removing the friends network all together.
2. Saying nothing of value in the press conference. Angelo would get himself into a ton of trouble.
3. Removing the Passing Game Coordinator tag shows us that the make it up as you go along Angelo way is over.

Do you still think he will play a role in play design? With Tice's ability to design blocking schemes, etc. I think they will work together quite a bit. Bates did a great job in 08 with Cutler and I think his knowledge of cutler, along with passing schemes will be very beneficial.

For those crediting Emery for this unless things have changed I thought Lovie had total control over his coaching staff I must be wrong this was all J.A.'s fault.

I am cautiously optimistic. The only time Bates had real control (Seahawks), the offense was terrible. The success he has had was when he was actually operating the offense for someone else under the other persons philosophy and scheme. However, The Seahawks offensive failures could be due to the terrible O-Line problems they had that year, and you can't blame that on the OC that had just landed there; AND you cannot deny the success he had with Cutler in Denver even if it was Shanny's Offense.
I think there is enough past to be promising and concerned at the same time, so yea, I think "cautiously optimistic" is how I'm looking at it. I DO believe that "Tice and Bates" are more appealing to me than "Martz and anyone", so I count this whole offensive leadership move as an up arrow. Tice can salvage enough of Martz's system to keep Jay and the rest of the offense comfortable and Bates can implement his past knowledge of what he knows Jay excels at. This has the potential to be a very nice resolution for the departure of Mr. Martz.
The Greatest form of revenge is MASSIVE success.

Excellent. And now we'll wait until April to find out who Cutler's big bodied receiver is.

I like this move, surprising but I'm excited for it and I'm sure Cutler likes someone he already established chemistry with. Now let's get a sure handed big body for him to target with this down the field passing attack.

Well, it has been said that Emery has complete control of decision making other than firing Lovie, so it can be assumed that he might have had to ok this hire. WHo know for sure though.

Just going by what I read;
"His history with Jay was a big thing," coach Lovie Smith told the team's website. "And not just history with Jay but a good history, a productive history with him helping Jay as a quarterback.
"I did a lot of research, and I think Jeremy is a perfect fit. Did we look at other guys? Yes, we did. Every time we have an opening, I look at everybody available. I even waited to see who would be available so I could see what the pool really looked like. Even though we had only brought in one guy (former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Greg Olson), I had been talking to a lot of guys. But in the end, it was Jeremy by a landslide."
Smith interviewed Bates last week in Tampa, and Bates then flew to Chicago to meet with recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Tice, according to the website.

Just going by all the I's in his statement but like you said who knows, just pointing it out before all the praise gets heaped in one direction or the other.
