Smith interviewed Bates last week in Tampa, and Bates then flew to Chicago to meet with recently hired offensive coordinator Mike Tice, according to the website.

Just going by all the I's in his statement but like you said who knows, just pointing it out before all the praise gets heaped in one direction or the other.
Yeah, I agree and think it was probably Lovie that did all of the legwork, but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have to present his info and decisions to Emery. It's possible that he didn't though. I really have nothing other than one statement early on that Emery will have control to base anything on.

yeah, he was fired from his college job and was out of football in 2011. But if he can help Cutler be a better QB, I'm all for it. Apparently the coaches are Lovies responsibility to hire, not Emerys.

I think there is enough past to be promising and concerned at the same time, so yea, I think "cautiously optimistic" is how I'm looking at it. I DO believe that "Tice and Bates" are more appealing to me than "Martz and anyone", so I count this whole offensive leadership move as an up arrow. Tice can salvage enough of Martz's system to keep Jay and the rest of the offense comfortable and Bates can implement his past knowledge of what he knows Jay excels at. This has the potential to be a very nice resolution for the departure of Mr. Martz.

I thought it was the natural fit right off the bat because of Jay's interest in playing under him again as a OC - that says an absolute ton about his respect for his coaching ability.
You really can't blame him for his time in Seattle or the choice to go there with the fresh-start nature of the franchise. He had little-to-nothing to work with in the talent department and a QB situation that was anything but ideal with Hasselbeck hurt or sucking most weeks.

Wow. Two good moves. A guy could get used to this. And being caught in a boobie avalanche.

Bates is a nice hire. It sounds like it was more Lovie than Emery, but either way it's a solid hire. Someone that's familiar with Cutler and was his QB coach when he had some of his best seasons in Denver.
I also don't put much blame on Bates for his struggles in Seattle. He was working with Matt Hasselbeck, no running game & a terrible group of receivers. He was set up to fail there. With less responsibility & more talent here (and potentially even more depending on what Emery does in FA & draft) he should do a much better job.

LMFAO!!! For weeks all we heard was that Bates wasn't even on the list of guys they had an interest in and all of a sudden he's the guy. "Best by a landslide"?????? So if that was the case why wasn't he one of the first to be considered. He was not under contract to anyone else so he could have assumed the position immediately.
I'm not at all unhappy since Bates was a guy I was boosting from the get go but does anybody else feel a little "jobbed" but this. Lovie Smith is one of the strangest birds I've ever seen when it comes to hiring his coaching staff. We lose guys like Chico and Perry Fewell, hire OC's who are the worst fit for the Bears you could ever ask for yet a guy like Darryl Drake somehow keeps his job despite the rather mediocre performance of our WR's.
Now the guy we probably should have interviewed the minute that the Titans turned us down regarding Loggains gets hired two weeks later because Lovie had to sort out everyone else who was in the pool. Seems to me that most of those guys got out of the pool a while back while Tice was dicking around with Oakland. Go figure?????????

JA gone, no Ruskell, Emery and Bates in. This off-season is gaining traction, pass the kool-aid (and boob avalanche)!

If we get a great deal on a free agent, maybe. My money is on the draft.

I surely hope so. There's nothing about this years WR class that has me all that thrilled enough to spend a first round pick on one. We aren't gonna get Brandon Marshall in trade and for all the guys who consider Ashlon Jefferey a v2.0 of Marshall it may pay to remember that Marshall was a 4th round pick not a first rounder.
He couldn't bust a 4.5 forty and the guy who sizes up to him in this years draft, Ashlon Jeffery, has an ongoing weight problem and from what's been reported hasn't busted a 4.6 forty. That's TE speed. IMHO all of these higher rated guys represent some degree risk and that's enough for me not to want to take it. There's enough depth this year to still get a good player farther on down the line.
