NFL.com news: Bears, Chargers, Panthers could be next season's Giants
Bears, Chargers, Panthers could be next season's Giants
The Giants did not make the playoffs in 2010 ... and then won the Super Bowl the following season. You know what's coming next. Of the 20 teams that missed the playoffs in 2011, which one has the best chance at taking home the Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl XLVII next February in New Orleans?
Steve Wyche [NFL.com]: Bears headed in the right direction
If Jay Cutler stays healthy, I'm rolling with the Bears. Chicago was really gaining traction before Cutler got hurt, even with a serious lack of big-play receivers and issues on the back end of the defense.
With Phil Emery now in charge of football operations, I believe they'll take care of running back Matt Forte contractually and finally get Cutler some needed receiving threats. Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs don't have much longer to seize the opportunity to win a Super Bowl. Neither does Julius Peppers.
The Bears will have a tough charge to get to the playoffs with Green Bay and Detroit in the same division, but with Cutler on the verge of entering star status, they have to be viewed as a legit threat.
Jason Smith [NFL.com]: If Jay Cutler stays healthy, Bears can do it
I think the Bears could have been in the Super Bowl this season if Jay Cutler didn't get injured. They finally put Cutler in the best position to win midway through the season and they went on a roll until he broke his thumb. The defense is still very good and can dominate as long as it's not asked to do too much. We talked a lot about how, being hurt, Peyton Manning was the real MVP, but how about the Bears without Cutler and their visit to Nosedive City?
Of course a lot of this depends on Matt Forte's situation. But if he's back and healthy, look out. The Bears have always been a team greater than their individual parts. They find a way to compete and win big games that they're "out-talented" in. They have all the necessary pieces. (Not that they shouldn't still try to get a star receiver to make things easier, though ...) It's nice to see NFL analysts actually see the light on Chicago.

It is and they aren't far wrong. You can probably count on the fact that with Lovies job on the line "his boys" will rally to the cause. I expect the defense to be particularly fierce. Urlacher and Briggs and Pep don't have all that many more years to get a ring and they want one bad. The DT's finally began to get some inside pressure so just get some help on the outside now so Pep isn't worn out by seasons end. The Giants beat the two best offense in football solely on the strength of their pass rush limiting opponents scoring. We should take note of that because we aren't gonna beat the Packers by outscoring them in a shoot out.
If we can get the #1 WR we need in FA and improve one or the other of the lines in the first round of the draft and add some youth and a starter or two with 2nd and 3rd round picks we start to look a whole lot better. More depth at key positions and staying healthy would go along way towards getting to a championship again. I think it's entirely possible that had we not lost Cutler to injury at key times these last two years we could have made it too the Super Bowl and quite possibly won it. Before Cutler went down we were ahead of the Giants and on a roll.

I will stick to what i have been saying we are a number one wr and a lt away from being a legit offense
all we need is some depth on defense and a few up and comers to replace the old guys

Hi Mark, welcome to the board.
As far as I know the Cowboys want him back in 2012 anyway. Besides, I wouldn't want a guy who's only had one good season on my team and give him the starting job.

LOL, you think you got it bad, I lived in Green Bay for 12 years before I came to Colorado and I have two daughters who still live there and are huge Packers fans. The youngest one's best friend in HS was Mike Holmgren's daughter!! Talk about feeling like a failure at making that conversion, I tell ya'.
