WR Robert Meachem as an opton?

    Positives:

-Size [6'2" 210lbs], has the size that the Bears are missing and desperately need.

-Speed, Robert Meachem is truly one of the fastest players in the NFL and he is a legitimate threat to score on every play including reverses.

-Deep Threat, Meachem is at his best catching the ball deep and over his shoulder which would be nice with Cutler's arm.

-Cost, Meachem won't be free but he will be much cheaper then the top tier guys.

-Run Blocking, Saints fans profess that he is an above average run blocker and a high effort blocker.

    Negatives:

-Production, his production has never been stellar and I do not know if he is an under achiever or is it the system that holds him back.

-Route Running, for the Bears if Meachem is filling the #1 or #2 role he needs to be more than a fly route runner and needs to run the underneath routes.

A knee injury set him back his 1st yr and they don't throw to him all that much cuz Brees + Payton spread the ball around. The talent is there and he would produce bigger numbers with more touches. I'd sign him in a heartbeat - he's just waiting to be a featured performer.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

Can't deny what you're pointing out here brother. If you look at his stats his number of catches, yardage and APC have been pretty consistent over these past three years. Good size, decent scoring despite limited touches and doesn't fumble. If he can block well and is willing to play between the hash marks too Tice and Lovie should love the guy.

He's bound to be less costly then the top tier guys and maybe he'd breakout if he were featured more. Even though he's older a look at Reggie Wayne wouldn't be a bad idea either. He should still have a couple of good years left in him.

Lovie's philosophy is going to be all in next season imo. Thus it wouldn't surprise me at all if they sign some of these 'older' players who probably have a couple good years left in their tanks. Lovie has to win if he wants to keep his HC title so I doubt he's in rebuild mode. Some here may not like it, ( some sound like they're in rebuild mode already ) but a Reggie Wayne makes sense to me (as long as he still wants it bad enough). They better sign guys who want to PLAY.... not guys looking to collect a paycheck for a few more years like Droptimus Prime.

He's a legit option if we cannot get jax/colston or Bowe/Jonson. He'd be the first on my list of the next group. ESPN said that he's used to clear out space for Graham a lot, and like it stated, w/the way NO spreads the ball around it's hard to have a breakout game.

I posted this in one of the VJax threads, seems more appropriate here:

Speaking of FA, Robert Meecham is also an FA. According to the linked article it's a possibility b/c Colston/Stevie J and Bowe are all going to probably get FA'd or new deals. He doesn't have the big flashy #'s, but it's hard to have big flashy #'s in NO who spread the wealth; and used him to open up Graham. He'd also not have the huge price tag of some of these other guys.

    Thoughts?

Chicago Bears Blog - ESPN Chicago

    ...WHY MEACHEM MIGHT MAKE SENSE

Dynamic playmakers such as Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson, Buffalo’s Steve Johnson and Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe likely won’t see the free agent market because of franchise tags or the sides working out new agreements. And it’s highly unlikely Vincent Jackson or Colston will either.

New Orleans is trying to work out an extension for quarterback Drew Brees, and once that’s done, it’s likely the Saints will turn their attention to Colston. So they’ll ultimately wind up having to part ways with Meachem. But don’t let Meachem’s production in 2011 (40 catches, 620 yards and 6 TDs) fool you. His lack of mega numbers stems in part from New Orleans’ spread-the-wealth system, and the fact he often became the clear-out man to open up things underneath for tight end Jimmy Graham.

Meachem’s explosive deep speed is part of the reason he became somewhat of a decoy. But he possesses the physical attributes to thrive in the right situation...

The plan that would excite me about Meachem would be to sign Meachem and draft Kendall Wright in the 1st round.

    1. Kendall Wright
    2. Robert Meachem
    3. Earl Bennett

That is a lot of speed on the field and we would have 2 guys that can get deep and score.

What would also be nice about Meachem is he isn't going to break the bank, and we'd be able to go after other FA's positions.

I think he would be a damn good pickup. Especially as a #2. If we could team him up with Bowe, that would be amazing! I know that's probably a pipe dream but who knows what will happen?

Rather get Meachem or Wayne and Eddie Royal and spend that first on a pass rusher if we can get one. Then take a WR with great upside who just needs some time to develop in the 2nd or 3rd. The way this draft class looks to me there is still some very good WR talent that will go in those rounds but the true pass rushers fall off some after the top 3 or 4. There's always the chance that one or two sill sneak up the boards following the combine but for the most part the reports I've read in the second tier DE's gives little hope for immediate success.

This where picking up a guy like Robert Mathis may be good or Avril on the rare chance that he'll get free of Detroit. If we do go with a WR or an OT in the first we can take a shot on one of the 2nd tier DE's and give him time to develop while Mathis provides the immediate help. We also need to find out what Wootton has got and whether or not he can stay healthy. The guy showed some flash and I hope we don't throw in the towel too early as we may have done with Anderson.

A good haul in FA opens up a lot of options in the draft. We're gonna get a good player at #19 no matter what but with that spare 3rd there's enough flexibility to trade up for a great player if one gets close and still enough decent talent to trade back if the value just ins't there at #19.
