Reggie Wayne may not be the biggest guy out there (same size as Greg Jennings though) and he's not the youngest (Jerry Rice played until he was 40) but he's a savvy vet who can get open and catch the ball anywhere on the field you want him to go.
I've seen some put him down because of his age claiming he's in decline and hasn't performed well since Marvin Harrision retired. Well if you take the time to look at his stats you can see nothing is farther from the truth. In the last three years since Harrison's departure Reggie has taken over as the Colts #1 WR and averaged 95 catches per year. He's gained over 3500 yards and scored 20 tds. Don't look like a man in a decline to me. Even without Manning in that crappy Indy offense this past year he caught 75 passes for almost 1000 yards.
Put Wayne and Bennett out there for Cutler to throw to as the #1 and #2 WR's and the passing game will sing like it hasn't sung since the days of Conway and Graham. The other benefit is that Reggie Wayne may well be the best bargain out there. He'd cost less than half of what we'd pay for a VJax a Colston or a Dwayne Bowe. This is a guy we should give some serious considersation to.

All this talk about Mario Manningham got me and a few others thinking about the wisdom of not depending on Knox's immediate return this coming year. It's a good point and since we aren't certain (and neither is he right now) we would probably be smart to hedge our bets if we can but MM is not the guy.
Once again compare what Eddie Royal has accomplished in his career in the same number of years that MM has played. Play special attention to his 2008 season playing with Cutler in Denver. He's never been as productive since but then again Denver hasn't had a real QB like Cutler since either. One other benefit with Royal is that he's an exceptional return specialist as well. MM is not. If Knox can't return to his previous form we not only lose our top WR but also a very good KOR specialist so it would make sense to hedge with a player who can do both. Royal does, MM does not.
When Tebow took over as QB in Denver Royal's production suffered right along with every other receiver on the Broncos. He should be screaming to get out of that situation and if it meant being reuinited with Cutler I think he'd jump at the chance. His future is on the rocks here in Denver for as long as Tebow is the man. Royal is another guy who you won't have to break the bank to sign. In fact we could get both Royal and Wayne for less money than the $9 mil it would probably take to sign just one of the others we often talk about.

I'm sure many will disagree with this solution but before just dismissing it look at the numbers these guys have put up (Royal's KR/PR stats aren't included but they're impressive I guarantee it) and consider how going about improving our WR core this way leaves far more $$$ left to improve some other areas which also need some attention.
We need another DE badly and if a guy like Mario Williams hits FA we're looking at spending Julius Peppers kind of money to sign him. We're not gonna be able to re-sign Forte, keep some of our own key FA's, get a WR like a VJax or Bowe and a DE like Mario Williams without some real cap magic so this is at least one way I can see to get our basic needs met more efficiently.
I think this also gets us away from reaching for a WR too soon and getting burned. We can get a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round with upside and have the time to let him grow into the roll. We've got 5 picks in 4 rounds and I'd like to see us draft for youth and depth in areas where we're getting old like DE, LB, CB and fill the gotta have it now spots in FA.
Just one man's opinion but I think I made a convincing argument huh?![]()
