I'd say look for Carr and get some competition at safety to compete w/Wright. If Rod evolves the defense it might make sense to look at a shutdown corner with some new strategies.

Like Asomugha, Routt should be in demand because he's a man on man cover corner. Of course as little difference as Asomugha made in Philly for what he cost he may be in less demand but I still think he'll be costly. We don't really need his style of play in Lovies defense but I guess we can count on Emery being familiar enough with him to know whether or not he wants to spend $$$ that way.

I think for the most part Routt was released because McKenize and Allen plan to purge that Oakland roster of dead or overpriced weight and Routt fit into that category. Al Davis fell in love with guys the new guys are proving they do not.

I've looked for materials that would give a scouting report on Brandon Carr, and so far I've had no luck. ESPNInsider has it, but I'm not a paid subscriber. Soul, can you find anything on him? What little I've seen speaks highly of him, claiming that he and Eric Berry (Go Vols!) are the two best players in the Chiefs' secondary.

College Scouting Report prior to the draft. Project coming out but he and Routt are probably the two top CB's in FA this year. If I can find a pro report I'll post it.

    Brandon Carr (CB)
    Height: 6'0"
    Weight: 207
    College: Grand Valley St.
    Conference: Great Lakes
    Hometown: Flint, MI
    High School: Carman-Ainsworth

    Selected by: Kansas City Chiefs
    Round: 5
    Pick (Overall): 5 (140)
Pick Analysis: Carr went under the radar as a Division II All-American for Grand Valley State. He has good size for a cornerback, but looked more like an athlete than a football player at times. He needs to work on his technique.
Overview Carr was a three-year starter and a two-year All-American for perennial Division II power Grand Valley State. He brought in 11 interceptions over the past three years and broke up another 37 passes during that time. He has a ways to go before competing for a starting or nickel back position, but his upside is high enough to warrant a late-round selection.

High School Prepped at Flint Carman-Ainsworth with current Lakers Todd Carter and Dan Skuta...First-Team All-Big 9 Conference performer as a senior DB...Caught 24 passes for 431 yards and four TDs as a WR, and tallied 53 tackles with two interceptions as a DB...Also participated in basketball.

Analysis Positives: Prototypical size for corner, tall with decent build and nice arm span. ... Shows good hands for the interception and can high-point the ball. ... Turns and runs with receivers well, showing good speed and the ability to maintain position. ... Plays in the slot at times, but is best on the outside.

Negatives: A better athlete than football player. ... Does not play as physically or aggressively as you'd like with his size. ... He does not press much and is only adequate coming up in run support or getting off receiver blocks. ... Marginal backpedal, and plays a bit high. ... Rough transition against smaller, quicker receivers.

Edit: Guess you can figure Emery knows pretty well what the guy can and can't do. I wouldnt' be surprised to see the Bears take a run at him if it's not a bidding war. Philly overpaid for Asomuhga last year and KC is rumored to be interested in Routt which to me they don't plan to sign Carr.

He's got the height we desire at the CB position, and if he's able to pull down 4-6 interceptions per season, I'll take that everyday. He seems to be an understated talent, and I halfway believe that he's exactly the type of corner the Bears always look for in the Cover-2/Tampa-2 set.
