I am just not that sure we will be willing to spend that kind of money in FA that it will take to sign a #1 and #2 WR in FA.
I think you've got the right idea here JJ. If we go after the top DE's or WR's what we spend will make a huge dent in the cap excess. Guys like Meachem and Royal are decent enough players that in the mix with the others we've significantly upgraded the WR position. Hell, if we just got Royal in FA and he had the chemistry with the Bears he had with him in Denver it would be a significant upgrade. I'd bet we'd get both Meachem and Royal for less than it would take to get VJax.

I think we need to get Forte signed to a cap friendly deal so that we don't have to burn up nearly $8 mil on him alone. If we can get help at DE, CB, or SS in FA then we have 4 picks in the top 100 to draft for other needs of depth. There are several areas where we need some improvement but the entire position doesn't need a complete overhaul and WR is one of them.

Neither Tice or Cutler have anything bad to say about the Oline so I think we can take Tice at his word about standing pat early on in the draft. Safety should be able to be filled in FA and the cost isn't anywhere near what it is for other positions. So if we can upgrade at least two spots in FA that leaves us better off come draft day and we can focus more on BPA picks than to have to reach for a particular position.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Maybe Jerry Angelo gave birth to a baby son and named him Mike Tice. He sure doesn't seem like he cares at all about upgrading our personnel on the left side of the line. He's going to singlehandedly ruin both his and Lovie Smith's careers. I'm all for getting a defensive end, but as I think Windy said in another thread, there are a couple of others who look pretty good in the second round that I'd be willing to give a look at. I think one is from Marshall and I can't remember where the other fellow was from. (My memory is not too good now that I'm taking psych drugs for the bipolar disorder, and it reflects on my test scores at school.) Maybe we should give Marcus McNeill the once over when it comes time to sign players if he comes at a reasonable price. I don't see why he wouldn't, though, since he spent most of last year on IR for a shoulder condition.
