New general manager Phil Emery and the Bears are expected to have around $20 million in cap space to go after free agents at key positions such as wide receiver and the offensive line.

“The bottom line, and Phil knows this, if there is someone we want — and it makes sense — money is not going to be an issue,” Bears Chairman George McCaskey told the Chicago Tribune.
As the Tribune reports, a good portion of cap space could be used by the Bears to retain their own players. Most notably, running back Matt Forte is without a contract.

So, Emery is your Bears version of the little blue pill?

I've been impressed with him ever since the news conference following his hire.

He handled some very hard and penetrating questions very well and he does seem to be the most erect member of the Bears front office staff.

throwing money around just to get top FA isnt a recipe for success...exhibit #1: The Eagles last year. Exhibit #2: the Redskins for ...oh the past decade or so.

"If it makes sense" i think thats the key phrase in that sentence. If there is a top FA available that will help our team, fill a need...i think they will pursue them, regardless of what it will cost. I think that is a good attitude to have regarding FA.

Yeah, that was kind of my point. I loaded that up with a lot of sarcasm. Last year everyone was bitching and whining about our free agent moves and talking about all of the great moves the eagles were making.

    Not a recipe for success.

Just like every year there are a group that want them to trade a bunch of picks to move up in the draft to grab some top prospect. That also isn't usually a recipe for success.

Good sober, sane thinking. Philly really got hosed on a couple of those big deals and their fans were screaming for Andy Reid's head. Big names aren't the secret unless big production comes with them. Peppers was a great acquisition but Pace wasn't and those have been two of the top name guys at their respective position in the last decade.

To me it's all about defining your needs and then looking for value in players to fill them. Pep was expensive but worth it. Maybe this years equivalent is Mario Williams or Cliff Avril as far as DE's go. We know those guy have skills. Maybe guys like VJax and Bowe and Bowe aren't the best value's in WR and guys like Colston or Meachem may be better and a guy like Eddie Royal represent huge value as a niche player.

Considering what it will cost to franchise Forte if we don't get him re-signed and then the players of our own we have to get to "re-enlist" we've got room for one or maybe one and half big namers depending on how clever Cliff Stein can get. We can't load up too much this year because we have other top guys of our own to extend.

It's nice to hear George McCaskey say that we have money to spend but there's a limit to that as well and there are a few teams that have far more excess than we do and some of them have an interest in the same guys we do. I'm really looking forward to seeing just how may holes Emery can fill in FA and how well he fills them. Interesting stuff is just around the corner.
