I wouldn't be opposed to it at all...as long as we handle some of our other issues in FA. Right now, it's projected that we'll have roughly $28 mill, but Cliff Stein and Emery could probably adjust some contracts to give us as much as $32 Mil if the Bears were inclined to do so. That kind of scratch can resolve a lot of deficiencies in FA, and still leave room for our Draft Picks. With that said, if FA is handled properly and efficiently, yea, I'm on board with Kirkpatrick as well as several other options.

Have you been around any college athletes, ever at all? They are not some vastly separate race from the normal college lifestyle where 99% of kids partake in the (at least) occasional debauchery. These are guys who have played in a league where people have literally killed people, (at least) been witness to homicides, seen multiple drug rings get busted, and watched probes into widespread prescription abuse. If you honestly believe that clear mind bullshit, you never saw LT play. If you honestly think pot is this inescapable demon for a young person or a team, you are ignorant. I'm not saying marijuana in sports are a majority thing, just that it is a common thing and nothing that any NFL player wouldn't just shrug off. Harvin and Desean both tested positive at the combine, both are studs. There was a WSJ article a couple years ago that claims NFL sources provided them with information that said "just under one-third of the 327 players who attended this year's NFL pre-draft scouting camp, or combine, had some incident involving marijuana turn up in interviews or background checks."
There's Grass on the Football Field - WSJ.com
Dan Marino, Ricky Williams, Randy Moss, Warren Sapp ... that is all.
Fuck you, sox. Anywhere in the business world you go, if you test positive for marijuana, you lose your job. Period. Until the day comes that marijuana is universally accepted and is legal, I don't want any part of a player who has those kinds of issues. I think if anyone is delusional to how this world works, it's you sox. Maybe you smoke grass, and that's your business, but it's not my thing, and I don't have to like it. Call this splitting hairs. It is what it is, and reality is as it is. I damn sure don't have to agree with you, and you damn sure don't have to agree with me. The same goes for soul or anyone else who has the same inclination.

I can't speak to weed but my favorite catchphrase is "D's get degrees". I think the best you can hope for is to endeavor to find players with a modicrim of intelligence and the character to develop it. Athletics is always going to have alcohol, drug, pregnancy, fighting, and the other myriad of problems. It's up to the GM's to determine the studs from the duds.
Hey Dags, I like the new sig.

Dude's pointing out that your opinion on NFL doesn't match with everyone else's. Like I pointed out, Dan Marino was rumored to have smoked marijuana, and that cost him. BTW, lots of players have tested positive, and the majority are given another chance, because the NFL is not "the business world" as you see it. If the kid was busted, say, 3 or more times while in college, i'd bump him down a round or two in the draft, but keep in mind he's in his early 20s, and may not share the same ethos as yourself. He's certainly talented enough to be drafted at 19 or higher, and once the possibility of losing money becomes an issue, that might change any inclinations he may still have towards smoking.

I believe you can draft a few "issue" type guys but too many black eyes in a Orwellian league where everything is scrutinized you run the risk of becoming the next Bengals.

We haven't had any known "issue" guys since Tank, i think. Sam Hurd doesn't count, because when his demons came to the forefront, he was already in jail.

wanna use a more recent one; like Ricky Williams? I know a lot of players smoke it; but most aren't so into it that they get caught with it. Problem w/picking someone you know does it is you don't know how into they really are. I'm w/Dagan on this one; if you know the guy does pot you don't pick him...at least not w/your first.

Well, Ricky had several other issues coming out of college, i think. If that is the ONLY problem, and you're looking at a talent you wouldn't otherwise get, you ****** take the guy. If he's got other issues and his head just isn't on his shoulders, ya gotta let someone else take the headache, I would think.

If we didn't have higher needs elsewhere this year and this guy fell to #19 I'd be hard pressed not to draft him. He played one hell of a game in the BCS Championship and he's got the right combination of size and skills we need at CB. Sooner or later we have to address CB. First of all we do have a current opening at LCB where Kirkpatrick plays and second Peanut isn't getting younger and he's due to make almost $8 mil next season.
How that plays out us anyone's guess but it's hard to see the Bears playing out that much. JMO
CB Dre Kirkpatrick: Alabama (6-3, 192)
Will be an ideal zone corner at the next level because of his size, instincts and physicality. However, he can also press off the line and consistently re-route receivers. Isn't a dynamic quick-twitch athlete, but showcases good balance, can keep his feet under him and looks like a "plus" caliber starting cornerback in the NFL. Nevertheless, cornerback is a stopwatch position and he’s still going to need to prove he can run well (low 4.5 range at worst) if he hopes to go in the top-ten.
What I observed about him in the BCSC Game is that this kid is a "football player" with a capital F. If he does have the speed he'd be a first day starter with the Bears.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I don't know where this myth of his lacking speed came from or why it keeps getting perpetuated, but Dre has sprinter speed. His short-area quickness isn't Janoris Jenkins-like, but it is not a weakness. He really doesn't have the normal deficiencies people talk about in tall corners, but I think it is getting projected on him by some couch scouts.
