    Dre Kirkpatrick

Am I the only guy here that would LOVE it if the Bears got Kirkpatrick at #19? This guy is a perfect fit for our D and would be a steal if he drops to us. Mike Adams would fill our biggest need but Dre Kirk is a different level of talent and I don't see any of the top tier LTs dropping to us. Imagine having Tillman and Kirkpatrick outside and DJ Moore in the nickel. Throw in say Robert Mathis from FA and a good FA SS and the defense will be a monster.

We gotta protect Jay but I don't see a great difference between a guy like Adams who IMO should be a late 1st round pick compared to what we could get at OT with our 2nd or 3rd rounders.

Round 1: CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama
Round 2: LT Zebrie Sanders, Florida State / WR Reuben Randle, LSU
Round 3: WR Nick Toon, Wisconsin / WR Stephen Hill, Georgia Tech
Round 3: OG Brandon Washington, Miami

    Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama 6'3 192
    Athleticism:
Tall corner with a lanky frame and long arms. Not a great athlete but above average considering his size. Shows adequate fluidity but obviously won’t be as smooth as shorter corners. Has a solid burst that allows him to close quickly. Could stand to add some bulk to his frame but rarely gets out-muscled.
    Grade: 3.0

    Instincts:
Terrific instincts. Is quick to diagnose plays and plays a step ahead. Masks his lack of elite athleticism. Very quick to recognize the run or short screen plays and attacks so fast blockers can’t stop him. Very aware in coverage, especially in zone. Will bait quarterbacks into underneath throws where he can come up and either break up the pass or lay a big hit short of the 1st. Smarter quarterbacks could play him with their eyes however, so he’ll have to be a little more careful.
    Grade: 4.0

    Man Coverage:
Plays a lot of press man at Alabama and shows good fundamentals. Has a strong jam and does a good job of redirecting receivers routes. Will get too aggressive with the jam at times causing him to lose his balance. Not as comfortable playing off man where receivers can get a step on him. Likes to control the receiver by being physical and limiting separation. Can be a bit grabby at times. Will get eaten up by quicker receivers in the NFL if asked to play off his man consistently.
    Grade: 3.0

    Zone Coverage:
Despite being praised for his skills as a press man corner, he’s best suited playing in a zone scheme in the NFL. His terrific instincts allow him to make a lot of plays in zone. Reads the quarterbacks eyes really well and will leave his man correctly to make a play on the pass. Shows a lot of savvy as a zone defender. Has the burst to close in a hurry and his long arms help him break up a lot of passes when coming downhill.
    Grade: 4.0

    Run Support:
Great run defender for a corner, probably the best in the draft. Will not shy away from contact and is quick to come up and defend the run. Excellent tackler as he rarely misses, even against bigger players. Reads the run quickly and has no trouble shedding blocks. Packs a punch as a hitter and has laid some big hits throughout his career.
    Grade: 5.0

    Ball Skills:
Has solid ball skills and shows the ability to turn and locate the football. Doesn’t always high point the football however and can be a little slow to make the play. Much better at making the play facing the line of scrimmage as opposed to over the top. His long hands are certainly a plus as he can reach around and get his hands on a lot of passes.

    Grade: 3.0

    Intangibles:
A 2 year starter who played behind some solid corners in his early years at Alabama. One of the most physical corners in the draft. Likes to talk a lot on the field and plays with the much needed confidence for the position. Accordingly nicknamed “Swag”. Known as a high character player with a great work ethic. No major injury concerns. Got arrested for marijuana possession one week after declaring for the NFL Draft. May have removed himself from a few teams’ draft boards for being stupid.
    Grade: 2.5

    Outlook:

I’m a fan of Dre Kirkpatrick because I love physical corners. He’s not afraid to mix it up and plays the run very well. He’s got the size teams love as well but doesn’t mean he’s stiff in the hips as well. I think he’d be best suited playing in a primarily zone scheme or one with a lot of press coverage. He’s not as good when playing off man and could have some trouble with it in the NFL. I think he can be a solid corner, but certainly not a shutdown guy like some are labeling him and will likely never be a top tier guy. However, for a team looking for a smart, hard working corner, who can help out against the run, he makes for a great 1st round pick.

Getting a CB high seems more probable that getting a LT since Tice is stubborn on keeping ol' Webb. If FA shakes out well it wouldn't be a far-flung idea. CB hasn't had a massive infusion of talent for a while now.

I don't want Dre Kirkpatrick because he's a pothead. Keep him away from the locker room! It may have been pot that he was arrested for, but geez, it carries over into your professional life, and that just doesn't look good to have a good body of work but not a clear mind. And, also, we can get better value in the later rounds of the draft or with the signing of Brandon Carr.

Dude, drop the fucking act already. Getting caught with herb doesn't make you a fucking pothead (just a dumb kid) and secondly, if you are delusional enough to believe a kid who smokes pot coming into an NFL locker room is going to cause an problem, you're plain and simply naive. Have you been around any college athletes, ever at all? They are not some vastly separate race from the normal college lifestyle where 99% of kids partake in the (at least) occasional debauchery. These are guys who have played in a league where people have literally killed people, (at least) been witness to homicides, seen multiple drug rings get busted, and watched probes into widespread prescription abuse. If you honestly believe that clear mind bullshit, you never saw LT play. If you honestly think pot is this inescapable demon for a young person or a team, you are ignorant. I'm not saying marijuana in sports are a majority thing, just that it is a common thing and nothing that any NFL player wouldn't just shrug off. Harvin and Desean both tested positive at the combine, both are studs. There was a WSJ article a couple years ago that claims NFL sources provided them with information that said "just under one-third of the 327 players who attended this year's NFL pre-draft scouting camp, or combine, had some incident involving marijuana turn up in interviews or background checks."

There's Grass on the Football Field - WSJ.com

Dan Marino, Ricky Williams, Randy Moss, Warren Sapp ... that is all.

Dags you gotta get over this pothead thing. You're projecting your own values into this and just because you think it's a real bad thing doesn't make it so. My generation grew up smoking pot and there are Bank Presidents and CEO's of major companies who still enjoy a toke now and then. The only difference is they don't get caught.

Now that we've gotten that outta the way I would say you're wrong. Kirkpatrick is a perfect fit for the Bears defense but I doubt he lasts until we pick. There isn't a higher value pick for the Bears than him. He can play zone coverage and he's a great tackler and that's what Lovie wants out of his CB's. Kirkpatrick is a younger and better Peanut Tillman.

You can forget about Brandon Carr. KC will never let him hit FA.

Okay, I think Kirkpatrick would be a great pick for the Bears but unfortunately I don't see it happening unless by some strange set of circumstances (and it can happen) he falls that far in the draft. Even then if there was a lock sure pass rusher still on the board we'd probably take him.

No matter how good your CB's are they can't cover forever and there will be some workable talent in the mid rounds. They won't be anywhere near as good as Dre but they'll be good enough. We need a top pass rusher and there may be none available in FA but if by chance we do land Mario Williams or Cliff Avril then we can certainly pass on a DE. Mathis will be 31 so he's not much younger than they guys we have and we have to think about younger talent somewhere.

As for the other projections Sanders is dropping like a rock in the rankings and Randle won't last until our 2nd round pick and I doubt Stephen Hill will either. Toon, McNutt, Jones in two maybe Quick in three based on size and upside. Washington maybe but if an Olineman we need an OT far more than an OG. I could be way off target and after the Combine the deck will be reshuffled so many of the current rankings will change but based on what I've been seeing this week that's how I see it.

Just to bring it up again, Dan Marino was the 6th QB picked in the 1983 draft because of marijuana usage rumors, not to mention the rumor that has in the past few years, come out that he smoked before games (doubtful, in my opinion). Also, wasn't Randy Moss found with a joint in his ashtray? That had no affect on his gameplay at all; his attitude is what ruined him.

I think it's definitely possible that Dre could fall to #19. He's probably gonna be the 3rd CB off the board after Janoris Jenkins as the teams that I expect might go after CB (Cowboys, Bengals) seem to be more man-cover teams. Coupled with getting busted for weed he might drop a little.

I see the Cowboys taking Jenkins if they need a CB and if Jenkins was gone the Bengals might consider Kirkpatrick but I think they'd just as likely go for Decastro if he's available. If the Cowboys decide not to go CB then the Bengals are the only team I see taking CB before the Bears and like the 'boys I think they'd take Jenkins over Kirk.

Put it this way....Adams will almost definitely be there at our pick. He'd probably be there a few picks later too. Kirkpatrick is not definitely gonna be there but I think there's a good chance he is. I think the same can be said for a DE like Ingram. It's not a dream like expecting Claiborne or Blackmon to drop.

We might need a CB but I for one don't care to waste a first round pick on one when we have other needs that need to be address first.
