We're making this all too complicated. First of all, I don't think Randle will make it into the first round. WalterFootball.com is projecting him to go around pick 37 (second round) to the Browns. I think the fact that he played in that weak passing offense at LSU shows that he just isn't cut out to be a first round pick yet. Stranger things have happened, though. Maybe if he has a good Combine workout, he will work his way into the bottom portion of the first round.

It's tough to tell what may happen between the Combine and draft day. If Jeffery turns in a poor time he may slip and Randle gain some ground or maybe it's Sanu or even Floyd who drops far more than expected. There always seems to be one or two guys who slip back farther than expected for whatever reason.
Look at Carimi. Before the draft we were calculating how we might move up 5 or 6 places to get him but at one point in time they had him going around #20 and yet he slips right into our laps. Maybe we get another shot like that this year and if we can afford to be a little flexible position-wise we may walk away with a real bargain. With four picks in the top 100 we should be able to find a couple of potential starters and some younger depth. Then add two starters from FA or possibly three and I'd say we'd look much better going into this season than last.
We could easily have been an 11-5 team again last years if we'd been bale to stay healthy. So in some cases like Carimi it's just like adding another new starter. For the first time since we signed Pep and traded for Cutler I'm excited about FA. We have needs, we have the $$$ to fill some of them with very good talent, and we have a new GM with a fresh approach who won't be afraid to be aggressive and get the guys we need. Should be intersting.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Bill GM Buddy Nix refuted the fact that the Bills will not use the franchise tag on Johnson.
The real question is how will the potential Forte contract impact the Bears ability to make a play for a free agent WR?
As you mentioned it would be smart to front load it and eat the cap hit this season, it would have been smart to do it last season thanks Jerry, but it may take the 8-10 million WRs off the table.

They are also literally turning their brains into mush playing football for our enjoyment. Aside from the concussion issues, every player retires with arthritis and spinal compression. I don't begrudge them making this money while they can. Also, the TV networks, video games and endorsement deals the owners make billions off of pay the salaries. I don't have any issue with players getting rich while the McCaskeys getting even richer.

No one said "Hey Cutler, YOUR GOING TO BE A QB WHEN YOU GROW AND THATS FINAL" they decided too as for the owners and players i think they are both a bit greedy here. I mean realyl does Mario Williams deserve the 80 million dollar contracts teams will be willing to pay him? **** no!

Not much at all if his 1st year cap cost is less than the cost of a franchise tag. You have to figure that $$$ was already budgeted so now if his cap cost is only $6 mil we've got that much more to use elsewhere.

If he is a dominant force and helps his team go to the playoffs annually and win a championship, he absolutely deserves it. Him performing at that level makes the owners far more money than what he will be paid. He isn't stealing money, people are willingly paying to watch him do what he does. That's the going rate for such a talent. And the fans are willing to support the team/sport to the level they do (spending $500 on tickets, buying Sunday Ticket and jerseys, watching the games on TV which allows the networks to give the NFL giant deals, knowing they will more than make it back in advertising), which gives the owners that money. The fans are getting entertainment out of it, the owners are making tens of millions annually, and the top players make millions for performing. The only answer if you have an issue with it is to not watch football at all or spend a dime on merchandise. That is the only way to show the team and players that they are greedy and should make less.
Let's be honest, if either of our professions were in such demand that people would spend millions to watch us perform, we would ask for millions. That's how it goes. Nobody is going to settle for making/charging much less than people are willing to pay for their service. The only difference is, an underwriter or an teacher isn't risking paralysis or even death every day they go to work.

The reason economically why they "require so much money" is that there are way, way more people willing to spend money voluntarily on their own NFL "amusement" than there are players willing and able to provide that level of amusement. I am pretty free-market libertarian when it comes to stuff like this. These are in effect person-to-person private contracts between mutually consenting adults each seeking their own individual goals. I've never seen anyone--whether a minimum wage janitor or a multi-millionaire actress--say to their employer: "I will only accept way less than the market is offering me". Unlike our prez seems to think, no one has any right to dictate or limit what any another free adult could or should legally earn with his/her talents and efforts.
Ok, I'm off my soapbox now lol...
