Scouting combine also a place to lay groundwork for free agent deals
Scouting combine also a place to lay groundwork for free agent deals
Bears must decide what to do with Forte, Williams, Idonije, Graham

INDIANAPOLIS — The NFL scouting combine is the birthplace of many free agent contracts each offseason, a place where team officials and coaches mingle with agents and talk shop.
The labor situation at this time last year prevented the usual business from happening, but if one hotel lobby was an indication Wednesday afternoon, plenty of mixing is going on between interested parties this year.
New Bears general manager Phil Emery will have an opportunity to jump into his role of interacting with agents, many of whom he already had relationships with during a long run as a college scouting director and area scout.
Free agency starts from within, and the Bears need to determine how they want to handle their free agents, deals that can get done before the March 13 opening of the NFL's shopping season. At times during Jerry Angelo's tenure, the Bears were busy grinding out contracts for their players at the combine, sometimes completing multiple deals.
Running back Matt Forte is nearly certain to receive the franchise tag if a long-term contract is not worked out by the March 5 deadline. Three other starters are scheduled to become free agents: defensive end Israel Idonije, wide receiver Roy Williams and tight end Kellen Davis. Idonije has made it known he'd like to return, and the coaching staff has talked up Davis.
Another free agent who should not be overlooked is Pro Bowl special teamer Corey Graham, who also had interceptions in three consecutive games at cornerback. Graham blamed the lockout for not finding more interest on the open market last summer, when there would have been little chance for him to learn a new scheme.
He has been adamant about getting a chance to play defense and certainly strengthened his resume with his play when nickel back D.J. Moorewas sidelined with a sprained ankle. His three interceptions came in only 87 defensive snaps. He got only two snaps on defense in 2010.
Meanwhile, he starred on coverage units again and is tied for third in the NFL with 75 special teams tackles since the start of the 2007 season. He's motivated to get a legitimate shot to play full-time, even though he was glad the Bears brought back special teams coordinator Dave Toub.
"Toub re-signing with the Bears doesn't really factor in much with my decision unless there are no teams out there interested in me on defense," Graham said. "If all the teams are only interested in me on special teams, then I would love to come back and play for Toub.
"But if any teams are interested in what I can do on defense, then Toub re-signing means very little because even after three interceptions in very limited plays this year, the Bears coaching staff still doesn't see me as a defensive player."

It's sloppy journalism to even mention Roy Williams in this discussion. There is 0% chance he comes back.

Graham got in the doghouse a few years back for not being willing to take snaps at FS. I think he is a better CB than Bowman, he certainly tackles better, and I think he could be a starter at nickel, if he just got a chance.
Lovie's doghouse is an awful place with a crappy set of rules that can get you there.

THere doesn't seem to be much talk about graham and Dj Moore when they talk about FA's. I would like to see Graham come back. He's developed quite a bit and I think would make a good starter now.
Not that it has anything to do with FA's, but I keep seeing people talk about cutting barber. I think that would be a horrible move. Yes, he made one very big mistake this year, but if you actually take the whole year into account, he was a good backup.
I have a feeling that KDavis is going to be re-signed to a two year deal and he will break out this season.

D.J. isn't a FA until next year but I sure think we could use Corey Graham somewhere in the defensive backfield. His point has always been about being given a shot not guaranteed a starting position. The guy came off the bench and did a great job subbing for D.J. and we're short on DB's anyway so make him an offer that's reasonable for his level of experience and see what happens. The worst case scenario is that he ends up the best paid gunner in the league and he's already proven that. We're not talking about $5 mil a year here.
I wouldn't cut Barber just yet either. We should go into camp with him and see what we've got but I would surely be bringing in some real competition for his spot. The only real issue I see is that Bell has earned the right to be #2 and $2-$2.5 mil he's a little pricey for a 3rd back. I think I read that Unga plans to be back and I think the Bears have also decided to bring Robert Hughes back for another look so we may we well see how it breaks out.
Re-signing Davis should be a no brainer. He's worked hard in a system that never favored and to me he's earned the right to get a fair shot under Tice. If I was gonna clear cap space I'd let Spaeth go and promote Andre Smith to his spot and use Kyle Adams as a Jimmy Kleinsasser type of HB/TE and a backup to Clutts at FB. Using a good blocking back made a big difference in our run game last year.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Roy Williams shouldn't even be considered a candidate for being re-signed by this team. He has to be the worst receiver in the NFL if for nothing else because of his excessive drops. One such drop against Kansas City, I believe, cost us a chance to tie the game, and he has such a laissez-faire attitude to go along with his shortcomings, to put it mildly economically.
Clutts is our FB. We have a real, honest to God FB for the first time since Jason McKie. He's better than McKie ever was at blocking, but nobody really knows what he's capable in terms of running the ball. I assume that Tice will use him some in short yardage situations. Maybe he's this generation's version of Matt Suhey, only with fewer carries.

We get Konz or another lineman plus getting everyone healthy I'd really like to see us finally punch it down the throat of opposing teams in short yardage situations again esp. Detroit!

I'd settle for Schwartz and Suh just being punched in the throat.

Wouldn't a stomp suffice for Suh?
