I know that the Bears are on the hook for a lot of money with Julius Peppers, but wouldn't it make sense for them to acquire Mario Williams? The Peppers and Williams combination would be unblockable, and would severely limit the high powered offense of Rogers and Stafford. Also, it would require them to keep their TE's at the line to pass protect, rather than killing us the way that Jermichael Finley routinely does. Despite our glaring need for a WR, in my opinion our team is way better with Mario Williams than any other combination of free agents or draft picks, and we'd be set with a good pass rush for several years. Do you agree? -- Jon Litwin, Chicago
The Bears should be one of 32 teams that is very interested in Mario Williams. It makes no sense for them not to want him. Williams is young (27), he's as gifted as any player in the game, and he plays a premium position. And the Bears need both a pass rusher and a young building block on defense. It's true the Bears already have a lot of money allocated to the position because of Julius Peppers, but you can never have too many good pass rushers. The Super Bowl champion Giants should be a good reminder of that. They have more pass rushing talent than any team, and they keep trying to get more. In their stable of pass rushers are three former first round picks and three former second round picks. The downside of signing Williams would be that paying him would limit the Bears' ability to add players, especially premium players, at other positions. Whoever signs Williams probably is going to have to make him the highest paid defender in the NFL. For the Bears, that would likely mean having to forgo signing a No. 1 receiver. But if adding Williams were a possibility, some sacrifices elsewhere would be well worth it. I wouldn't get too excited about Williams making it to the open market though. The Texans are too smart to let that happen.
Cornerback is one of the needs on defense this off-season for the Bears. Wouldn't Brandon Carr be a good fit with the Bears? He has good size and Phil Emery has to be familiar with him considering the KC Chiefs background. -- Matt, Montreal
Carr is a fine player and would be an upgrade for the Bears. But it's going to take mucho dinero to sign him. The Bears have more pressing priorities, I believe. And if you look at their history with Lovie Smith's defense, they have never gone after big money cornerbacks, or even drafted one in the top two rounds. The belief is you can get by in the Tampa Two without a premium corner.
I've been reading that the Steelers will not be able to afford to put the franchise tag on Mike Wallace. Is there any chance the Bears offer a first-round pick to sign Wallace and open up the offense? -- Steve, Denver
It makes sense from the perspective that Wallace probably is going to be better in the near future than anyone the Bears would be able to draft with the 19th pick. But giving up that first round pick is not very appealing for the Bears. In addition to having a number of holes to address, the team is starting to get a little gray in spots. The Bears need young players. They have given up a number of draft picks in recent years in trades. Continuing down that path will lead to long term problems.
I was wondering if in the draft Justin Blackmon falls to around the sixth or seventh pick do you think there is any possibility that the Bears would trade up for him? The Bears desperately need a play maker at wideout and he seems like he would be a perfect fit. Also I don't know the situation with Lance Briggs if he is still not happy then the Bears could make a straight up trade for the seventh pick which is held by the Jaguars whose linebacking core isn't great and give them our first and Briggs. -- Sam Rudman
I don't see Blackmon in a Bears uniform, unless he falls to the 19th pick, or at least well beyond where he is supposed to be chosen. A trade up of a few spots might not be out of a question, but a trade-up like you are talking about seems far-fetched. The Bears are not in position to be giving up multiple draft picks for one player. If anything, they should be looking for ways to acquire more draft picks. As for packaging Briggs in a trade-up, I doubt he would have the kind of trade value you are suggesting. At the age of 31, Briggs is still a fine, fine football player, but his value to the Bears is probably much greater than his value in a trade would suggest.
Wide receivers Ashlon Jeffrey and Michael Floyd have both been projected to be taken by Chicago with the 19th overall pick. In your opinion, which receiver has the better potential upside in this year's draft? -- Ben Main, Freeport
I think Jeffrey has more upside, which is to say the chances of him becoming an elite NFL player are better. But I also think the chances of Jeffrey becoming a bust are better. Floyd is a safer pick, though he is not without risk either. Floyd also is more NFL-ready, I believe. Most teams I've spoken with at this point believe Floyd is a better prospect. But teams still are forming their opinion of Jeffrey, who is an underclassman.
If a premier, disruptive defensive tackle were still available at the 19th pick, would the Bears be willing to invest a first round selection in that position, or are they satisfied with Henry Melton and Stephen Paea? -- Nicholas Secco, Chicago
If the DT was clearly the best player on the board, the Bears would have to think long and hard, given the value of the position. Drafting a defensive lineman is almost always OK with me, assuming he's the right guy. But defensive tackle is not a great position of need for the Bears. What's interesting is there is some quality depth at the defensive tackle position in the first round. As many as five DTs could go in round one, and it is not out of the question that a defensive tackle could be clearly the best player on the board at 19. Tackles who could interest the Bears are Penn State's Devon Still, Louisiana State's Michael Brockers, Michigan State's Jerel Worthy and Mississippi State's Fletcher Cox. At this point, there is no clear established pecking order for these players.
Do you have any idea when league typically announces its schedule for the upcoming year? -- Tom Eder
The schedule usually comes out after the NFL meetings and before the draft. This year, my guess is the schedule will be released in the first two weeks of April.

If it's "mucho dinero" for Carr then wtf do they think Mario would be lol. I'm for Carr if that's Emery's call. I think signing Graham is a must esp. if we don't get cb help. I'm curious to get Emery's first impressions at the combine to at least get an inkling of what he's thinking.

Just a few comments on the column.
IMHO the Bears need Mario Williams more than they need VJax or any other $10 mil per year guy. OK, let the barbs and disagreements fly. The Giants proved twice how effective you can be shutting down a great offense with a pass rush. Pep alone can't do it but add MWill along with those young DT's and we've got ourselves a nast defense again.
With a QB like Jay Cutler and a RB like Matt Forte we can upgrade the WR position without breaking the bank. When asked about how did Cutler respond? "Just get me anybody over 6'2". So we do even if that guy is whichever rookie we pick and we sign a top notch vet who's shorter and cheaper. Hell just hooking him back up with Eddie Royal will pay some dividends. The Giants won a Super Bowl with a good but certainly not great receivers. Jay Cutler is as good as any QB in the league at fitting the ball into tight spaces. Find someone as big as RWill to take his place add Royal and with Davis back in the receiving game again at TE Jay gets his big targets and we upgrade the WR situation with two guys who'll cost us less than one VJax or his equivalent.
Julius Peppers was a big reason we made the NFCC Game last year and he'll continue to be a force for a while longer yet but he can't do it alone and we need some youth. We're talking about a guy who is an equivalent of Pep and four years younger and the guy has come straight out and said money isn't the only consideration. Contrast that with Avril's attitude or that of Carl Nicks who now wants a bigger deal than Evans. These guys don't give a flying fuck how much they may hurt their teams ability to sign or even keep other talent just as long as they get their "cookies".
Phil Emery has an enormous opportunity to put his mark on this team immediately if he plays this FA and draft well. MWill would probably listen to offers from the Bears based on the defense he's be playing in and the fact that we have a franchise QB capable of taking us to a SB. Add to that we've got the cap excess to sign him and that eliminates quite a few others from the list immediately. If there is one big singing and only one big on that we can afford then please let it be this one.

There's some decent CB talent in this draft all the way down into the mid rounds. As Pompei points out it's never been Lovie's philosophy to draft or sign big time cover corners. Actually if Tim Jennings was 3" taller and 10lbs heavier and could hold onto picks he'd be nearly ideal. I think they'll make an attempt to resign him and I don't think he'll get a lot of attention elsewhere. He as his limitations but he's a good fit for the Bears defense.
The main thing is restocking with younger players as we've done at Safety. In the Bears defense a big dollar DE is a lot more important than a big dollar CB. We badly need to upgrade WR but I believe we have more options available for how to do that than we do getting a pass rusher as good as MWill.

I'd be ok w/Mario provided we get a wr in FA. We sign Graham and Jennings along with a pick somewhere high the corners will hold.

Not hard to do unless we try to get both MWill and a guy like VJax. I still say we'll do fine with a simple upgrade, putting Cutler and the receivers in a better position to win and spreading the ball around. Just moving Bennett to Flanker from the slot to replace Hester and signing a guy like Eddie Royal for the slot will upgrade quite a bit right there. Get another less prominent FA and draft a guy within the first three rounds who also has size and it will work.
Or if they were only gonna spend that 1st on a WR anyway maybe we go after a guy like Wallace. He's a far better option than anybody who will be there when we pick.

Could we afford MW + Meacham OR MW + Wayne + Royal?
If so, then the draft holds lots of new interesting possibilities.

Mario Williams would be a dream but at what cost? i hear Houston was planning to knock his socks off with a nice contract. As for Wallace i like Wallace but i agree giving up a 1st for him and then a contract is a no need situation.
If we could afford this how about
Mario Williams
Eddie Mr Royal with Cheese
Tyvon Branch
Reggie Wayne
Then draft a guy like S Hill to be that lights out deep threat, i know Plax wants to go to Philly but how would most feel about a 2 year small deal?

I would be all for Mario Williams for 3 reasons.
-You can never have too much pass rush and it would give us 2 FREAKS rushing the passer.
-The DE class in this draft does not excite me.
-Peppers is 32 and we need someone who can take the torch in 2-3 years when he is done.
Peppers got 6 years 91 million so I am assuming that Williams gets a similar deal, which is a ton of money at the DE position.
My Guess: 6 years 94 million/ 45 guaranteed [14/15/15/16/17/17]

Some of this depends on whether or not we can get an agreement with Forte of lacking that we need to franchise him. That tag will run $7.7 mil whereas the 2012 cap cost of a longer term deal would be significantly less. Meachem or Wayne won't command top dollar and Royal even less but once we start heading into top dog territory the price will go up substantially. We can probably spend $$$ on one top level guy but not both because we have Forte and a few of our own to corral.
If I had my druthers it would be to jump in after MWill with both feet just like we did with Pep. He's already said that $$$ isn't the only consideration so we need to convince him that his career will take off more in Chicago than it will in Houston. We've got some good things to offer him but unlike Pep the Texans aren't headed for the bottom of the pack the way Carolina was. Houston is an up and coming team. Basically we need to make him an offer he can't refuse and convince him to come to Chicago and be part of a great defense.
We really need to have our ducks in a row for this one because the only way it works to our advantage is to get his commitment quickly like we did with Pep. Either he commits of he won't and if not we need to shoot at the next guy on the list.
