INDIANAPOLIS — If the Bears are interested in using their first-round draft pick on a defensive lineman, Monday's NFL combine workouts confirmed they will have some outstanding athletes to choose from.
Four defensive ends could be in play in the late teens, where the Bears are picking: Southern California's Nick Perry (4.64-second 40-yard dash), Illinois' Whitney Mercilus (4.68), South Carolina's Melvin Ingram (4.79) and Alabama's Courtney Upshaw, who did not run.
North Carolina's Quinton Coples, who ran a 4.78 at 284 pounds, is the highest-ranked end and probably will be gone before the Bears choose.
One front-office man said the workouts showed as many as six defensive ends have first-round ability. The other is Clemson's Andre Branch.
Perry's workout may have been the most impressive because he also had 35 repetitions on the bench press and a vertical jump of 38.5 inches.
Mercilus, whose 16 sacks last season were 6.5 more than Perry's total, wasn't far behind in terms of impressing NFL teams. One NFC personnel director commented on how athletic Mercilus looked in positional drills. "He is a very good athlete who clearly has all the tools," he said.
Perry, Mercilus and Ingram all showed initial quickness, which is critical for pass rushers.
Two defensive tackles also left NFL teams buzzing.
Memphis nose tackle Dontari Poe moved like a cat at 346 pounds, running the 40 in 4.98 and bench pressing 225 pounds 44 times, best among the 2012 class.
Mississippi State's Fletcher Cox looks like the best pass rushing defensive tackle and will appeal to two-gap teams like the Bears. He ran a 4.79 at 298 pounds and could be the first DT taken.
As many as seven defensive tackles could be first-round picks, as LSU's Michael Brockers, Penn State's Devon Still, Michigan State's Jerel Worthy, Connecticut's Kendall Reyes and Clemson's Brandon Thompson also are in the mix.
Still and Brockers had been considered the top DTs, but neither had a great workout.

I've made it no secret that despite other needs this is how I prefer we spend out first round pick and I'll once again say why.
In order for us to get any benefit at all in 2012 from a WR we must upgrade through FA. Rookies seldom make an impact in the first year unless they're a top ten pick. VJax, who is this years top FA WR had just a little over 500 yards receiving in his first two years. The most consistent FA WR throughout his career including an excellent rookie year is Marques Colston who was a 7th round pick. I think we can get as good a WR in the draft in the 2nd and 3rd rounds as we can get in Floyd in the first.
Maybe the 2nd biggest need is an upgrade at LT but there won't be one who could start for us by the time the #19th pick roles around and were pretty well set inside. I wouldn't have a problem drafting a top OG like DeCastr or Glenn is he was the BPA when our pick came around but the OG class is also pretty deep this year which says we should be able to get good talent later as well.
Top notch pass rushers don't slip very far down the boards and amping up the pass rush is always high on Lovies list. He even spoke about greater expectations in that regard for 2012. Here are 4 guys and a possible 5th (Branch) who may be available when the Bears pick Nick Perry being at the top of the list. It would not surprise me to see us jump all over him if he's there at #19.

Yeah, I was never on board for a receiver in the 1st and now, like you, I don't think LT is gonna happen. I'd be happy with a DE or even a cornerback if he's the best on the board.

I know I brought this up in another thread, but now that he has performed well in the combine, we might want to be taking a better look at Mercilus. I know he only had one standout year, but it was a dandy. All the measurables just point to a guy that finally matured and progressed to a level to break out, and he did so against very good competition. The guy is fast, quick, great size, strong and huge long arms to be able to beat the hell outta OT's. I know we can show examples of guys that didn't pan out as one year wonders, but there are just as many, if not more that do very well. If he had stayed for his final year and had similar numbers, he would go top 5 in 2013. If someone like DeCastro is there, I take him, but short of that, I would be very excited to see Whitney with a "C" on his head.

The Cubs do need a big bat.

I would say it all depends on FA. If we splurge on Mario Williams or Cliff Avril its obvious we arent getting a DE. If we splurge on wrs its obvious we arent going after a WR
either way we are super thin at WR, OT, DE, LB, DB and as far as quality we are really lacking at WR and OT

Well, yea. Obviously this is all super early in the whole off season process. Anything can happen between now and then, and with a new GM, we have no clues what he may be planning.

I can say this though I trust a rookie DE developing on this team allot more then a WR so I would rather get the experience at WR. I think Drake is worthless. And this is not me saying Marinelli will make a stud out of anyone cause he hasnt developed shit since being handed Rice in FA and Sapp

Dontari Poe has Haloti Ngata type physical skills and I would not be angry in the least if he was drafted at 19.
