By not making GM Phil Emery available to the media, the Bears missed out on a major PR opportunity.

After listening to John Clayton, who joined the Waddle and Silvy Show today on WMVP-AM 1000, it's hard to disagree with Clayton about the organizational media upside of new Bears' GM Phil Emery not meeting with the media at the 2012 NFL Combine conducted this past weekend in Indianapolis. It would have been a great opportunity for the Bears to unveil their new general manager and for Emery to lay out his football philosophy with respect to the Bears. Plenty of season ticket holders are still waiting to hear the vision from their new GM. (Haven't the Bears already unveiled their new GM? And hasn't Emery already laid out his football philosophy? He wants big, tough men on his team. Even if Emery had spoke at the combine I don't think we would have heard much more than we already have.)

Clayton classified it as “a major mistake.” Clayton went further, adding “beat reporters will not be willing to give Emery the benefit of the doubt now.” Only time will tell, but Clayton is accurate stating “most of the other GM’s out there were talking.” (Why should Emery care what the beat reporters think?)

To drive this point home, even the secretive New England Patriots, who do not have a titled GM, provided Nick Caserio. Caserio is director of player personnel for the Patriots, who spoke at the combine about the Patriot draft philosophy and what the Patriots are trying to accomplish to reach their sixth Super Bowl in 12 seasons in 2012.

So let’s put this in perspective. The World Champion New York Giants provide their general manager, Jerry Reese, at the 2012 NFL combine. The runner-up New England Patriots provide one of their war room decision makers in Nick Caserio. Also, every other team in the NFC North provided their general manager and the Bears, who did not even win their division, elected not to unveil their biggest offseason acquisition in 2012.

A golden opportunity was lost to steal the media spotlight within the NFC North Division, if not the entire NFL. (Emery doesn't seem like the type that want the media spotlight. He wants his organization under information lockdown.)

I couldn't care less that Emery didn't speak with the media at the combine. What would he have said that he hasn't already. He's already made it clear that he doesn't want much info getting out about their plans and processes. He would have just given us fluff and then been criticized for not speaking openly. I'll let Emery continue to speak through his personnel moves. I'm just really hoping I like what he has to say in FA and the draft.

Weather he talks to the media or not I don't care. What I care about is if he tips his hand at some point or his rivals can get a bead on what he's thinking or doing. He's a new guy as well so they should cut him some slack. The only PR that matters is success (or failure) and that is what Emery will be judged on.

Is the media all of a sudden going to finally wax poetic about the Bears? Is Dilfer all of a sudden going to change his tune? No and who cares. Screw them, their spin, and their whiny bias.

That's a pretty shitty article and a dumb point by Clayton. The Bears gain NOTHING by speaking to the press in this case. If they would have argued that their new philosophy would reach potential free agents, they would be wrong, but at least they would be making an argument.

DGAF. I speak for all Bears fans when I type that in reference to the "organizational media upside" of talking to the media. Satan could rise from hell, and if he won a SB, would get more good press than bad.

Frankly, this makes me respect Emery even MORE. I could give two mouse craps about what Clayton says. Like anyone this time of year, I keep my ears open for his inside info on FA, trades, etc, but it's the news I'm listening for, not his glowing disertations on meaningless spewings from GM's around the league that are usually lies in the off season anyway. Well done Mr. Emery, well done.

Just one question to begin with. Is this coming from the same Jim Miller who was once a journeyman QB for the Bears? If so I guess he's out to prove he's no better at writing a column than he was winning championships.

All of you made excellent posts about this. Every single is spot on target. Where in the Bears GM manual does it say that courting media favor discussing your philosophy and strategy before FA and the College Draft is required....or even desired. I'm happy with the fact he isn't making himself available which means he's most likely spending his time on more beneficial pursuits like reviewing scouting reports and game tape on players he has an interest in. We hired a former scout and personnel guy as a GM and not the Bears or Lovie Smiths Personal Press Secretary.

This entire article is laughable. Let John Clayton or Jim Miller or whoever shows up with a writing pad and pen or a mini recorder and mike go to their corners and pout. Phil Emery and the Bears owe them nothing and as fans it's always more fun to speculate like we do than to know every move ahead of time which means so do 31 other teams. I'm sure Phil Emery and Lovie Smith can communicate their philosophy and direction to those FA's they're interested in when the time is right. I mean can MWill be all that unaware of what would be expected of him if he signed with the Bears? It sure as hell wouldn't be as a 6'6" 280 WR.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
