Chi66 Offseason
Free Agency:
*
Mario Williams: Breaking the bank on a defensive end of his caliber is something that would push Chicago defense from quality to downright terrifying. With a stable of solid linemen already, and of course the terror that is Peppers, Williams would turn this inconsistent pass-rush into a QB destroying machine that even the 85’ Bears would feel queasy watching. He could take over for Peppers once he retires and until then would create the best pass rushing tandem in the NFL. Stafford will need to check his contract for injury clauses after this signing.

*
Robert Meachem: With Brees, Colston, and Evans to look at, Meachem may be the odd man out in New Orleans. He would come to Chicago with the promise to have a shot at #1 receiver with a guaranteed spot at #2. The deep threat would provides Chi-Town with a great red zone threat the Bears add the height they’ve so lacked at a price they can afford.

*
*
NFL Draft:
First Round [19th] Cordy Glenn: With the intention of sticking him at guard, Chicago adds an absolute mauler in Glenn. Comes in day 1 and improves the line with his physically dominating presence and can blow holes open for Forte all day long.

*
Second Round [51st] Stephon Gilmore: Chicago adds a corner that fits the bill size wise can come in and immediately fill the spot across from Tillman. Gilmore isn’t afraid to come up and help in the run and gives Chicago a quality duo between him and Peanut. **

*
Third Round [72nd] Marvin McNutt: With measurables comparable to Michael Floyd, who ran himself out of our reach, Chicago snags a big bodied WR who can develop into the starting line-up. While Meachem is always a threat deep McNutt can work the inside with pride and will be a great red-zone threat with his impressive jump ball ability.
*
*
Third Round [83rd] LaDarius Green: With Martz out of the picture the Bears can finally add the new age TE that the offense has been lacking since the departure of Greg Olsen. While he needs refinement in blocking he presents instant mismatches for the defense and will provide Cutler with another weapon in the receiving game.

*
Fourth Round [111th] Terrell Manning: The Bears grab a linebacker who can immediately come in and play great special teams for them while he adds bulk and learns under the likes of Lack and Briggs.
*
*
Fifth Round [142nd] Philip Blake: Heir to the Center position Philip Blake blew holes in defenses all year long for Baylor and would provide the Chicago with a quality center once Garza is no more.

*
Sixth Round [173rd] BJ Cunningham: With Cunningham the Bears get a solid developmental receiver who will provide a special team boost in the mean time.

*
Seventh Round [204th] Carmen Messina: Chicago gets more depth at the linebacker position with Messina who comes from Urlachers alma mater.

*

I do not think we can afford the free agents as Mario is probably going to command at least 15 million in his first season and Meachem is a 4-6 million guy.
You can ask the other guys about my undying love of Cordy Glenn.
I actually like the picks although the WR core is still pretty thing and we would need an impact from McNutt in year 1.

To be honest I don't know to much about cap structure and I know it'd be pushing it with Mario, just an option worth mapping out. I personally would really like Floyd at 19 if he's there and like I said I had a mock similar to yours, hence the change to Mario in FA instead.*

*Heh, well maybe if Cliff can work some magic we could do this mock. I was thinking Wayne/Royal for FA pick-ups, what do you think they're looking for contract wise?

*If it could work, I'd be pretty happy with this FA. My biggest concern is the lack of WR. I had a second round Sanu, third round McNutt, third round Hayward mock but changed it last second in favor of the TE and a corner with more upside.
*Overall though I think we need to get Cutler a reliable #1 like Vincent Jackson but the opportunity to add someone like Mario Williams to the D is something that must be considered, I'm anxious as hell to see how FA plays out.

Chi,
Excellent and hard to disagree there. I like your FA and your top 3 picks.
Yes, we can afford MW + Meacham in FA if structured properly and we do not need to keep Spencer if we draft Glenn, DeCastro, or Konz in round 1. It would require cuts like that but it's doable.

Very true, didn't even consider that. Probably would look more like:
LT: Webb
LG: C. Williams, E. Williams
C: Garza, Blake
RG: Glenn
RT: Carimi, Louis
*I really love the idea of adding Williams, I just can't picture a team dreaming up much to stop us with those two coming off the edge. Peppers is immediately going to have less blocking on him which means he'll be more successful and Mario is gonna see less than normal due to Peppers. Any mishaps and those two will take advantage and if you devote all the blocking to them you know our DT's have the ability to get to the QB. It would be a nightmare for QB's, OC's, and all lineman on the Bears schedule.
Also with the addition of Glenn I love the thought of running off our right side with Williams pulling. CW was fantastic at pulling last year and with Carimi, Glenn, and Williams plowing the way you know Forte is gonna see daylight.*

That would be true if his compensation was 100% salary but that isn't the way you do it. Just as an example let's say we sign him for $90 mil over 6 years with half of that in the form of bonus money. Some signing bonus some future roster bonus. You can also figure in the fact that this is the lowest cap value Pep has during his entire contract. It's $11.3 mil.
OK, how do you structure to end up with a 2012 cap cost of half that $15 mil? Give him a signing bonus of $30 mil and a 2012 salary if $2.5 mil. The signing bonus is amortized over the life of the contract so $30 mil / 6 yrs = $5 mil per year right? Now add in his salary of $2.5 mil and his cap value for the year is $7.5 mil and nowhere near $15 mil. You have to structure deals in the most cap friendly way possible. There was no cap in 2010 which is why the Bears front loaded his deal.
MWill walks away with $32.5 mil in cash for 2012 but his cap value is only $7.5 mil. I'm not saying this is ideal or that it isn't but it sure is one way of doing it while still leaving plenty of room for additional free agents plus some of our own. And the 2012 cap value of two All Pro DE's is less than $20 mil for both!

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

couldn't afford Meachem, Forte and Williams + depth guys and a TE.
If we sign Williams and Grubb (spell), we can draft a WR in the 1st, 2nd and a CB in the 3rd. 1st round WR = starter and the 2nd round is a longterm project. Add those to Bennett, Hester and sign a cheaper known guy like Wayne or even Moss.

It also leave us in cap trouble as we are not trying to fit 82.5 million of cap hits into 5 years.
So yes Mario gets his money, but we still need to find a way to get all that money under the cap. Most teams outside of the Redskins want to backload a deal so severly. And most players do not want a backloaded contract because all of their salary is in years when they are at risk to get cut.
If I am Mario I will sign with someone who gives me 30 million guaranteed plus a base salary of 10 million that way I get 40 million instead of 32.5.
I agree if we sign Mario Williams we are going to have to make some cuts like Spencer or even Briggs.
Lets play a game of who would you be willing to lose to make over the team this season and add Mario Williams.
Chris Spencer [Draft a Replacement]
Izzy Idonije [Not Re-signed]
Lance Briggs [Traded]
Devin Hester [Traded]
