Cap Number Lower than Thought
Apparently the cap number is coming out lower than they thought.
Source: League, union “scrambling” to push up 2012 cap number | ProFootballTalk
A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the league and the NFLPA currently are “scrambling” to increase the tentative number.

All we can do is wait out the disclosure. My guess is that they'll try to keep it at least where is was. It's not just the Bears it's affecting it's every other team too. If the cap is lower those teams who are under the cap will just have to scale back the offers they make. The issue may come for teams over the cap because it may entail releasing even more players to get under the cap.
To me this is the danger of back-ended deals putting too much emphasis on a consistently rising cap. After several years of seven figure increases that climb has leveled off for the time being and teams who have too many contract dollars which need to be accounted for this year, like Pittsburgh, will find themselves somewhat handicapped in FA. They have to cut players in order to bring in new ones.
This is where we may luck out as far as a LT is concerned. It's one of the highest paid positions on a team so if there is a guy do a big bonus or his salary isn't justified by his performance we may well see him on the FS list. I think Marcus McNeil may be a good example of this. WR is another highly paid position and it's not impossible that we may see some unexpected talent released to FA as "cap casualties".

Just though of something else. If the Bears were aware of this, which I sure they were, it may explain why AA and OMG were cut loose now to add back in what may be lost if the cap declines or isn't any higher than last year.

I know you are not saying that the above was the only reason or disagreeing with the following but it deserves emphasis that the Bears seem to be taking the high road in those releases (as they have before). Releasing a player before free agency starts allows him the best chance to catch on with another team. Nonstarters are in more danger of dropping out of the league or getting a lower-than-value contract if released late. You don't usually release really good players even if their contracts are too much as you are trying to renegotiate or decide to overpay and those really good players are the only ones who are liable to come back and hurt you.

Oh definitely. The Bears have always been pretty good at showing some respect in that way for a players contributions. AA was a pretty valuable part of our Dline for a number of years and Omiyale was the best matador imitating an Offensive Tackle as the NFL has ever seen. I hear OMG is talking with the Seahawks. Man I sure hope he lines up at LT against Pep the next time we face him. He's owes us a few sacks going the other way.

Now wouldn't that be poetic justice !
Payback for all those sacks he allowed JC to endure.

Like I was saying. If they asked him to guard the Gatorade Cooler while he was on the bench it would get sacked 8 time in the first half too.
