Top 30 free agents: Insider's guide to best players on the market

By Pete Prisco | Senior NFL Columnist

The Chiefs' Brandon Carr is one of four CBs who'll go in the draft's Top 10, says Pete Prisco. (US Presswire)

With the franchise tags eliminating a bunch of quality players from the free-agent market, it's time to update my list of the top free agents.

Instead of a top-50, this is down to a top-30 list. Houston defensive end Mario Williams still tops the list. He's clearly the No. 1 player. After that, it's tougher. But I love Kansas City corner Brandon Carr more than most. I think he's the second-best player on the market.

If you notice on my list there are no running backs. I just don't see them being worth it on the open market. You can find backs in the draft.

Let's see how these guys go off the market next week. Who will be the last man standing from my top-10? Any guesses?

    1. Mario Williams, DE, Houston Texans -- How would you like to be his agent? He is going to be the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. End of story.

    2. Brandon Carr, CB, Kansas City Chiefs -- How often do good man-cover players in their prime hit the market? This kid is about to get paid. His is this high because he plays a premium position well. He turns 26 in May.

    3. Carl Nicks, G, New Orleans Saints -- I consider him to be the best guard in the NFL. He is a nasty player who can block for the run or the pass. He turns 27 in May. Said he wants to go back to the Saints, but that seems unlikely.

    4. Vincent Jackson, WR, San Diego Chargers --With all the tags going to receivers, his stock has gone up. He just turned 29, which could turn off some teams.

    5. Red Bryant, DT, Seattle Seahawks -- He had eight starts in his first three seasons, but started 16 in 2011 and was a force on the Seattle defense. Watching tape on him is impressive. He plays hard.

    6. Cortland Finnegan, CB, Tennessee Titans -- He just turned 28 this month and will be a hot commodity on the open market with Brent Grimes tagged. The Lions would seem to be a team that will make a push.

    7. Marques Colston, WR, New Orleans Saints -- It will be tough for the Saints to keep him with the Drew Brees' cap number so big. They want him back, but he will be a hot commodity. He is a big target. He's had a lot of knee injuries.

    8. Carlos Rogers, CB, San Francisco 49ers -- He is the player who will benefit most from signing a one-year deal last season. His play tailed off late and his age (30) is a concern.

    9. Tracy Porter, CB, New Orleans Saints-- He is a good, solid starting corner, and with Grimes off the market and him turning 26 in August, he will get a nice deal.

    10. Jeremy Mincey, DE, Jacksonville Jaguars -- This is a player who can give you eight to 10 sacks and be a good run player. The Jaguars want him back, but only if the price doesn't get crazy.

    11. Chris Myers, C, Houston Texans -- He was one of the better centers in the NFL last season, a perfect player for their cutback schemes. He turns 31 in September. There is talk the Packers could sign him. I say he stays.

    12. Jared Gaither, T, San Diego Chargers -- The Chargers added him late when Marcus McNeil went down and he played well down the stretch. He has ability, which he showed when he was a starter for the Ravens before back troubles slowed his career. He turns 26 in March.

    13. Curtis Lofton LB, Atlanta Falcons -- He's a plug linebacker who had a tendency to get lost in pass coverage at times. He's good against the run but with the league going to a passing league is the value there? He turns 26 in June.

14.Aaron Ross, CB, New York Giants -- He's been a decent starting corner for two Super Bowl teams. That means something. He's a good second corner. He turns 30 in September.

15.John Abraham, DE, Atlanta Falcons -- He had 9½ sacks for the Falcons in 2011, but only one came in a division game. He will be 34 in May. That's a concern. Message: Buyer beware.

    16. Ben Grubbs, G, Baltimore Ravens -- He missed six games with a toe injury this season, but started 48 straight from 2008-10. For a team looking for a good, solid guard, he's the guy.

    17. Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Denver Broncos -- Was he playing for a contract last year? Some scouts think he was. But he played to a high level. Can he continue it? That's the million-dollar question.

    18. Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco -- It's almost a given he's going back to San Francisco. He is coming off his best season with 17 touchdown passes and five interceptions.

    19. Demetrius Bell, T, Buffalo Bills -- After starting 16 games in 2010, he had just six starts in 2011 because of knee issues. He turns 28 in May, which means his best football is in front of him.

    20. Reggie Wayne, WR, Indianapolis Colts -- The question with Wayne is how many more years he has left to give. He can still be good for three or so, but how do you structure the contract? He turns 34 in November.

    21. Pierre Garcon, WR, Indianapolis Colts -- He caught a career-high 70 passes last season without good quarterback play. But is he worth a big-money deal? Some scouts wonder about consistency.

    22. Matt Flynn, QB, Green Bay Packers -- After watching him on tape, I'm not sure he can be elite, but he can be a solid player. Money would be an issue if I were signing him.

    23. Scott Wells, C, Green Bay Packers -- He is the anchor of the Green Bay line and played well this season. He is a tough guy who battles. He just turned 31 in January.

    24. Stephen Tulloch, MLB, Detroit Lions -- On a one-year deal, he had 111 tackles and two picks for the Lions. He just turned 27, so age isn't an issue. He's a steady player.

    25. Jason Jones, DT-DE, Tennessee Titans -- He has flashed at times in his four seasons with the Titans, but he should be doing more. Has played both inside and outside for the Titans. He turns 26 in May, so he has time to become a really good player.

    26. Sione Pouha, NT, New York Jets -- He's had over 50 tackles each of the past two seasons on the nose for the Jets. That's impressive. But he just turned 33, which is a concern.

    27. Dwight Lowery, FS, Jacksonville Jaguars -- This former corner made a nice home at free safety for the Jaguars last season. He played above the level of expectations. The Jaguars want him back, but in a league where safety talent is at a minimum this former Jets player will get a nice deal. He just turned 26 in January.

    28. Evan Mathis, G, Philadelphia Eagles -- Mathis signed a one-year deal with the Eagles and played well. That could earn him a nice multi-year contract. He turns 31 in November.

    29. Reggie Nelson, S, Cincinnati Bengals -- He has rejuvenated his career with the Bengals. In a league where there is a shortage of safeties, he will get a decent deal. He can cover and has improved his tackling.

    30. Jarrett Johnson, OLB, Baltimore Ravens -- He's one of the underrated players on the Ravens defense. He isn't as flashy as some, but he gets the job done. He does turn 31 in August.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Never been a huge fan of Pete Prisco's columns but he can't really mess up this years top free agents. The list will be considerably smaller at the top than last years. Don't be surprised is we don't see a few more "cap casualties" added to the list the closer we get to the opening day of free agency. There are some older players out there with pretty big cap values this year.

Outside of the two guys who top our list, VJax and MWill, there are some opportunities to plug a couple of holes with vets while drafting some younger talent. Carr is without question the prize at CB but there are a few more who'll get some play. The question is would these guys be an upgrade over Tim Jennings who'll also be testing the water?

Finnegan is more highly rated but to me he's kind of a punk and a "bad boy" type. Guys like Rogers and Ross are kind of rental players at their age and still leave needing to draft to get younger. I don't know much about Porter but is he the kind of guy who fits into a zone defense?

We didn't pursue Gaither last years but with OMG gone (thank God) we need more help at OT somewhere along the line. He and Demetrius Bell head the list of an unimpressive OT class. Maybe we'd just be better off spending a pick on one for Tice to work up the line. The draft seems to have some 2nd tier talent worth looking at.

I'd love to see us get MWill but the price tag may be overwhelming if the bidding erupts and Abraham's age worries me. Would Mincey be a decent fallback. If the guy can play the run from LDE and contribute 8-10 sacks and provide consistent pressure would he be worth it? Or would we be better off to re-sign Izzy for a couple of years and use our first on a good pass rusher? It's a much less expensive route to go if we do decide to get into the VJax sweepstakes.

VJax, Garcon, Colston, as top tier choices or Meachem and Royal as second tier. Maybe one of each? I think if we don't sign Royal we're overlooking a guy who could really come in and upgrade our WR core far more than anyone could imagine. Even if we spend the coin on VJax we should still sign Royal for the slot and as a KOR as a hedge against Knox's injury lingering into the season.

Other than this I don't see anyone on the list who'd be a huge need.

The problem is that the DE group is so small, outside of Mario Williams I do not see anyone who is going to add a ton to what we have already. Mincey to me is a younger Idonije.

The CB market is a little bit better and perhaps Emery grabs Brandon Carr to go with a Vincent Jackson/Marques Colston signing.

I think we may need to draft the DE position, because outside of Mario no one is exciting me.

There aren't many DE's available the size of Izzy, Pep or MWill and the only one at the top of the draft near that size is Coples. The rest, Upshaw, Perry, Ingram, and Mercilus are all Mincey's size. To me it looks like Mincey is beginning to breakout as a sack guy. If we can get 10 sacks a year, consistent pressure and run stopping ability out of a LDE we're doing well. I just put Mincey in the fallback group of DE's if MWill isn't a possibility.

Gotta remember if we're drafting a WR in one we'll probably need a DE out of FA.

Don't think you'll see the Bears spend that kind of coin for a cover corner in a zone defense. We have never made that position a priority over Dlineman since Lovie has been the coach. Lovies pass defense is all about a great pass rush with a bend but don't break, keep the play in front of you and you'd better be able to tackle too pass defense. Guys like Carr are kind of a luxury in this defense.

    Just sayin'.

Sorry I did not mean small as in physically small, but small in number of quality guys. There are only 2 guys in the top 30.

I do not know whether Carr will be a target there are a couple of things going for him,

    1. Emery has experience with him.

    2. The Bears have been playing more and more man defense lately and they may want someone who can match up with a #1 WR in man to man.

The only problem I have with this is that we still wouldn't have a TRUE #1 WR.
All the NO WR's scare the hell out of me as I believe that they are more products of the "system" and don't play as well away from their home field.
As far as Floyd goes, unless Emery trades up to get him he will be long gone before we pick still leaving our cupboard bare.
