Final Pre-Free Agency Mock
This Offseason is based on the projection by Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune that the Bears should start the offseason with 30 million plus in cap space.
Breaking down Bears and the salary cap - chicagotribune.com
Cuts/Restructuring [7 million saved]
OT Frank Omiyale [1.6 million]
RB Marion Barber [1.9 million]
DE Chauncey Davis [500K]
DT Anthony Adams [1.9 million]
OG Mansfield Wrotto [500K]
WR Max Komar [500K]
Re-Signing [14 million spent]
RB Matt Forte [5 years 38 million/20 guaranteed] [7/8/8/8/7]
A must resign and the most dynamic playmaker that the Bears have the deal is a little more than Marshan Lynch's deal.
TE Kellen Davis [2 years 6 million/3 guaranteed] [2/4]
He is worth another look and this draft and free agency suck for TE talent.
DE Israel Idonije [2 years 6 million/3 guaranteed] [3/3]
A locker room leader and good run defender he will pair with a rookie at LE and develop a nice rotation.
S Craig Steltz [2 years 2.5 million/1 guaranteed] [1/1.5]
Steltz has been a consistent contributor and can hold up as a sport starter and a leader on special teams.
RB Khalil Bell [2 years 3 million/1 guaranteed] [1/2]
Bell in my opinion has earned the right to be the primary back up, he runs hard and catches the ball well out of the backfield.
DT Amobi Okoye [3 years 13 million/4 guaranteed] [3/5/5]
The Bears need depth and pass rush.
Free Agency [15 Million Spent]
WR Vincent Jackson [San Deigo] 5 years 50 million/25 guaranteed [15 SB/10 RB] [8/9/10/11/12]
The Bears are desperate for a WR and when you are desperate for a position and you feel you are close to winning you need to spend. Jackson has the size [6'5" 230lbs] and the ability to get deep [18.4 ypc]. He has never been seriously injured and he has produced every season that he has played. The Bears finally solve their need for a #1 WR.

CB Richard Marshall [Arizona] 4 years 16 million/7 guaranteed [5 SB/2 RB] [3/4/4/5]
The Bears need a starting CB across from Charles Tillman that has more size than Tim Jennings. At 5'11" 195lbs Marshall brings more size to the position as well as a ton of physicality. Due to injuries this season Marshall played part of the year at FS so we no he is not afraid to tackle.

WR Eddie Royal [Denver] 4 years 12 million/4 guaranteed [4 SB] [2/3/3/4]
The Bears have 1 healthy WR on the roster in Earl Bennett and they need to add depth that can contribute. Royal brings speed and a familairity to the offense and will allow Knox to start the season on the PUP list. Royal also can contribute as a KR if Hester gets hurt again and Knox is unable to play.

QB Kyle Orton [Kansas City] 2 years 4.5 million/2 guaranteed [2 SB] [2/2.5]
Jeff Dickerson mentioned that Orton wanted to come back to Chicago and that if he cannot get a starting job he would come to Chicago. This might be interesting to look into and would give the Bears the back up they need.

LB Larry Grant [San Francisco] 2 years 6 million/2 guaranteed [2/4]
Grant a RFA has starter skills and could be developed as Urlachers replacement or to take over for Briggs.

Draft
1[19] DE Nick Perry [USC] 6'3" 271lbs.
The Bears have addressed the WR position in free agency and now can focus on the need across from Julius Peppers at DE. Perry is a FREAK athlete and a guy that can rush the passer. He has great speed [4.67 40] and nice hand use. Perry beat up 1st round rated OT Jonathan Martin in his matchup this season.

2[50] OT Zebrie Sanders [Florida St] 6'6" 320lbs.
The Bears need to get more talented on the offensive line specifically at the LT position. I would like the Bears to sign Carl Nicks, but we simply cannot with our weaknesses at WR. Sanders is a player with elite physical tools. His size combine with 35" arms and 28 rep strength make him an ideal OT. Sanders has some technique issues, that Tice will have to deal with, but he has LT physical skills. Sanders is immediate competiton for Webb.

3[74] WR Brian Quick [Apalachian St] 6'3" 225lbs.
The Bears have added WRs that can help in 2012, but they need to start developing for the future. Quick is massive, fast and raw and he can be developed as a starter down the road and a red zone target with Vincent Jackson.

3[80] LB Terrell Manning [NC State] 6’3” 225lbs.
The Bears LB core is aging and needs an infusion of youth. The nice thing about having veterans still playing at a high level is that you do not need to invest high picks right away. A 2nd round LB should be starting for your team. Manning provides the height and speed that the Cover 2 needs and he can be developed for a couple of seasons.

4. OG Lucas Nix [Pittsburgh] 6'5" 317lbs.
The Bears need to keep adding quality young depth to the OL and provide options at the OG spot. Nix has the size and toughness that Mike Tice wants on the OL and he can come in immediatly and compete with Chris Williams at LG. Competition on the OL is never a bad thing and provides the Bears with options that Omiyale did not provide.

5. CB Donnie Fletcher [Boston College] 6'1" 200lbs.
Having addressed the starting CB role in free agency the Bears can add a developmental player with the size that they are looking for. Fletcher can contribute right away on special teams while developing on defense.

6. S Damien Jackson [Mississippi] 6’2” 198lbs.
The Bears continue to add youth, depth and speed to the secondary. The Bears appear to have their starting safeties in Major Wright and Chris Conte, but both have been injured and Wright has been inconsistent on the field. At a minimum Jackson adds to the special teams unit.

7. Surrendered for signing LB Larry Grant.

I love your optimism. If we sign the four free agents you have targeted, I will buy you a beer or three

I think we have a real shot, maybe not Orton.
We would still only be signing 1 top level free agent and we would be signing a couple of complimentary pieces. I expect the Bears to sign 3-4 guys to fill in key positions and allow themselves some wiggle room in the draft.

Can't argue with ur post other than the erroneous info that Perry beat up Martin in the USC / Stanford game this year : he had 2 pressures the entire game that had no effect on how those plays ultimately played out. The analyst that provided this info is flat out wrong. Matter of fact Perry wasn't impressive in that game and I'd draft Martin b4 him any day.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?
A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

if Grant is a RFA then what is the compensation we would have to give up to get him?

Just curious because I haven't hear people mentioning him lately, but the Bears are going to be cutting Brandon Meriweather, right? I don't know how much the Bears would save from the cap, but he is horrible and I can't imagine him coming back next year.

He's a UFA, so we don't need to cut him.

No cap help at all cuz he was on a one year deal. And yes he shouldn't be re-signed. Another waste of money like Manu and Chester Taylor.
