In what strongly points to Chris Williams is headed back from guard to tackle, the Bears scheduled their first free-agent visit at Halas Hall and it’s a guard, veteran Anthony Herrera, released this week by the Minnesota Vikings in a multi-player salary cap dump.
Herrera, 31, has started 70 games during his career and got his break into the Minnesota starting lineup in 2005 when Mike Tice was Vikings head coach. He underwent surgery for a torn left ACL and started 12 games last season, earning Minnesota’s Ed Block Courage Award.
The Bears rushed for 2,015 yards last year despite shuffling at both guard positions and now appear to have Williams ticketed for a return to tackle and a position battle there. The Bears are deep at guard with Lance Louis, who filled in at right tackle last season, Chris Spencer and Edwin Williams.
But they are considerably less set at tackle, where Gabe Carimi is coming back from knee surgery and J’Marcus Webb needs to take a step up in consistency. Chris Williams was drafted to be the franchise left tackle in 2008 and has starts at both left and right.
Not keen on this whole Herrera visit. I wouldn't be opposed to some good old fashioned veteran help in the like we got from Reuben Brown years ago, but Herrera is no Reuben Brown.
Agreed. If we're not going to get Grubbs I'd prefer just to find a guy in the draft. Lots of them there!
I'd love DeCastro or Glenn in the first.
if Williams moving to T we need a LG not a RG
Pretty sure we traded our third.
