He was supposed to be but by the end of the year Davis was outdoing him every game. Spaeth is the second TE we signed to play as a spare OT in Martz's offense. We don't need that kind of guy anymore now that Martz is gone and when we do we still have Andre Smith to move into that spot for a fraction of what Spaeth is costing us.
Tice offense uses a TE as a receiver and Davis is the best combination of blocking and receiving skills we have. Hell, I thought Andre Smith looked like the best blocker of the bunch last preseason and of we hadn't just signed Spaeth he would have made the roster and played. They moved him up from the PS late last year in order to protect him.
I'd be willing to bet that if we re-sign Davis or his equivalent and Smith looks as good in preseason as he did last year that Spaeth will get cut before the season starts. He's good blocker but also a luxury we don't need in Tice's offense.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
