Cutler Willing to Vouch for Marshall.................

    'Super-excited' Cutler vouches for Marshall

    Staff report 3:18 p.m. CDT, March 14, 2012

Jay Cutler said Wednesday he is excited about being reunited with former Denver Broncos teammate Brandon Marshall and is confident the receiver will be cleared of accusations stemming from a weekend incident in a New York nightclub.

"If there's one thing we know about (Bears general manager) Phil Emery, he's a detail guy," Cutler told "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on WMVP-AM 1000. "I find it very hard to believe he'd pull the trigger on this knowing that something had happened and that Brandon was at fault."

Marshall, acquired by the Bears from the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday for two third-round draft picks, has been accused of striking a woman in a New York nightclub over the weekend.

Asked if he knew any details about the incident after speaking Tuesday with Marshall, Cutler said, "I've got a good idea. Obviously, I wasn't there. ... It's all going to play out. I'm super-excited to get him.

"It's unfortunate that this came out when it did. We don't want to paint a bad picture of Brandon Marshall. Does he have a record of some stuff in the past? Absolutely. But I know him as a person, not only as a player, and he truly is a good guy. We've got a good team and we got a heck of a player."

Cutler said his "sole mission" will be to keep his friend out of potentially troublesome situations.

"He doesn't really go to the clubs at 4 a.m.," Cutler said. "I don't know how this stuff happens to him. It just does sometimes. It'll be fine. I'm fully confident in saying that.

"I talked to Brandon yesterday and I think he was bummed about it ... the perception and everything, of him getting to Chicago and that being over his head. But let's not judge him quite yet. I know he's got a checkered past and Brandon is the first one to stand up and admit that, but I know deep down he's a good guy. He's made some mistakes but going forward I see nothing but bright things for the guy." (And he's a BPD case so he'll have a checkered future too. It doesn't cure itself and in fact it's really not curable at all)

Cutler played with Marshall with the Broncos in 2007 and '08 and said their friendship has stayed strong.

"We've remained close and we're going to get even closer now that he's back with us as a Bear," Cutler said. "I'm going to keep every eye that I have on him, making sure he's doing the right thing. ... He's matured, he wants to do the right thing. It's just a shame that his past still haunts him a little bit. But that's what happens, everyone makes mistakes, Brandon's still learning from them and growing. But we got a heck of a guy and a heck of a player, and I think Phil made quite a splash on Day One." (I truly believe that Jay does not understand the level of Marshall's mental illness or he wouldn't be sticking his neck out this far. It's not about maturity and it's because something in his distant past still haunts him that his recent past will continue to be and issue. It's a virtual certainty that he'll be in hot water again if not already because of this latest thing. It would be far closer to the truth to say that he can't help it than to say he's outgrown it. You don't outgrow a BPD. You can only hope it mellows with time and doesn't get worse. Unfortunately he's not that old)

Cutler says he lobbied the Bears to acquire Marshall and believes the team will continue to pursue other receivers.

"I don't think we're done at that position," Cutler said. "I think we definitely want to get another one. But it's just going to come down to whether someone is available and whether Phil and the rest of the crew feels like the value is there at whatever pick we're at or whether we can get the right price. I don't think we're going to be foolish with what we're trying to do. If we can get someone to help us out on offense, I think we'll grab him."

Cutler said he talked Tuesday to another former Broncos teammate, free-agent receiver Eddie Royal, and didn't rule out the chance of the Bears making a run at him.

"I would love to see Eddie here," Cutler said. "But like I said, price and how he fits, and there are a lot of factors that go into it. It's not fantasy football where you plug people in and hope it works. ... If we get him, that would be great. I know he would fit in. He's a great teammate. It would be like old times."

Asked whether he was providing more input into the Bears' personnel decisions, Cutler said, "I don't know, but we're heading in the right direction so whatever I'm doing I might as well keep doing it.

"I think Phil the new GM is doing a great job of just addressing our needs, listening to the people that should be listened to in the organization."

I'm not unhappy about getting Cutler what he needs and the guy he wanted. It makes it that more likely that he'll stay in Chicago and we need that to happen. He's is the guy who can win a Super Bowl if we can get him back there. If Cutler had been the QB of the 2006 team rather than Grossman there's a good chance we could have won it.

Hell, I say get him Eddie Royal too. I would have opted for that before I even traded for Marshall. Surround Jay Cutler with 3 guys he has confidence in and loves to throw to and get him some protection and we can win without Matt Forte even suiting up. Kahlil Bell is nowhere his equal but he's good enough to win with. A passing attack with Marshall, Royal, Bennett and Davis rivals anything else the NFCN has to compete with and we'll still have a good running attack even without Forte.

I've pretty much reached the point where, if they've offered him a deal similar to the $20 mil guarantees that others of his stature have gotten and he still is balking at that, if we haven't signed him by the draft I offer him to all comers for a 1st and a 3rd this year. Two firsts, a second and two thirds and we use one of those picks to draft a RB. No RB is irreplaceable and their are some good ones in this draft.

If Marshall gets suspended for four games, Bears will definitely need another WR immediately. Should get one anyway, but now its almost more needed now that we may lose him for a quarter of the season.

Knowing his rap sheet, and history of violence against women, it is hard to idly stand by and say you are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt

Bears knew of Marshall incident before trade

By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter 11:48 a.m. CDT, March 14, 2012

The Chicago Bears were aware of a weekend incident involving Brandon Marshall before they acquired the wide receiver in a trade with the Miami Dolphins, the team said Wednesday.

In a statement from general manager Phil Emery, the Bears said they were fully aware that Marshall was accused of punching a woman in the face outside a New York club, an incident police are investigating.

"Both the Bears and Dolphins were aware of what occurred over the weekend,” Emery said in the statement. “We decided to move forward with the trade. We have high expectations for Brandon as a Bear.”

According to a statement from Harvey Steinberg, Marshall's attorney, the player was involved peripherally in an incident at a club in which his wife was hit with a bottle during an altercation neither of them was part of. He said Marshall took his wife to a hospital where she was treated for "serious injuries" and said Marshall hopes to "assist authorities" regarding the matter.

The New York Post reported that the woman, Christin Myles, filed a police report saying that during the fracas Marshall hit her in the left eye, blackening it.

"We will allow the process to run its course but have all the faith in this process," Steinberg said.

Kennard McGuire, Marshall's agent, also expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved.
"Brandon has always held himself accountable," McGuire said. "He will always have my unflinching and unwavering support. I caution the public not to judge, especially when he and his wife are the victims."

As for the trade to the Bears, McGuire said, "Brandon is very excited about the opportunity to play with such a historical organization, and coach Lovie Smith. To be reunited with Jay Cutler and Jeremy Bates is like a dream."

The Bears traded two third-round draft picks for Marshall, who has three years remaining on his contract.

Marshall has a long list of off-field issues, and has twice been arrested for suspicion of domestic violence. Marshall was involved in a fight at a Denver night club that eventually sparked a shooting that killed former Denver Broncos teammate Darrent Williams.

The NFL no doubt will look into the latest matter. Steinberg has denied any wrongdoing on the part of his client.

Emery, in his introductory news conference in January, said he places high value on character.

“Moving forward when you’re looking at players, you’re looking at tools that they have, the physical skills or talents that they have and the traits they have or their character, their work ethic, passion, reliability, accountability, the type of people they are to the community,” Emery said when he was hired.

Jerry Angelo, who I have great respect for, taught me a lot about digging to the ninth degree about character.”

The Bears are coming off an embarrassing incident with another wide receiver. Sam Hurd was waived in December after a federal drug sting. Investigators claim Hurd said he wanted to begin selling 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana in a Tony Montana does the NFL story. Hurd is awaiting trial.

Marshall has not been linked to drugs previously. But his list of off-field issues is lengthy. It dates back to when he was at Central Florida and was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer. In March 2007, he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence after he was accused of preventing a taxi his girlfriend was in from leaving his residence. Charges were dropped after he completed an anger management course. In October 2007, he was arrested for DUI in Colorado and eventually pleaded it down to driving while impaired.

The Rocky Mountain News reported sheriff’s deputies were called to Marshall’s home 11 times in a 2 1/2-year span. In 2008, he put his arm through a television set, a story he originally explained by saying he slipped on a McDonald’s wrapper. He was charged with misdemeanor battery in March 2008 in Atlanta and eventually found not guilty in court.

In March 2009, he was charged with disorderly conduct following a disagreement with his fiancée (now his wife) in Atlanta. Those chargers were dropped. Last April, his wife Michi Nogami-Marshall was arrested after allegedly stabbing Marshall in the stomach
. Marshall revealed to the South Florida Sun Sentinel last summer he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, a mental illness that leads those who suffer from it to struggle with relationships, mood control and emotions.

If Marshall makes it on the field throughout the season, this duo will have some crazy numbers. I can't wait.

    He will, and it will.

The only question is how many games.

Im happy we got Marshal cause the price tag was low. Two thirds is shit. Teams are trading multiple first rounders to move up in a draft. And since Miami eats up the guaranteed portion he is cuttable at any time with no cap ramifications. So worse case scenario I wouldnt feel bad about losing draft picks Im so used to it from the past ten years under JA lol

Soul what price is worth it for Royal? Skins supposedly offered him 2 years 12 mil isnt that a bit much? or is it a number they threw out in the media to scare teams off him?

and I agree about Forte. Bush isnt backup quality he is starter quality and proved it last year for the Raiders. He would have been a 2 round pick if he didnt break his leg so people not thinking he is starting material cause of draft status are wrong. Now if we are serious about signing this guy does that open up the door to trade Forte? And what teams would give him a deal that have picks to lose? Im thinking Cleveland and Cinci both have holes at RB and have multiple first rounders so they can afford to lose picks in a trade. And Patriots if for once want to splurge on rb
