Whats worse? Knowing and making the deal or not knowing at all?
I can not figure out what is worse. Knowing and still making the trade, or not knowing and making the trade.
In a statement the Bears said they knew about the incident that took place and decided to make the trade. Knowing that there was a good chance he could be suspended for four games they still make the deal, and give up as much as they did with the chance he could be lost for a quarter of the season. Knowing that, they should have been able to get him cheaper than the two thirds they gave up. Especially if no other teams were really pursuing him. Trading for a guy who might very well get suspended is not really a smart idea, especially if you are going all in for the upcoming season, which they should be with the defense always looking on their last legs with as old as they are.
Not knowing and making the deal is almost as bad. That puts you back in the situation with Sam Herd, not doing near enough research on your targets.

You got to give them something if the guy isn't on the block.
I think cutler should tell him to get a divorce.

when you have ex fbi guys on your staff supposedly researching this stuff for you before making a deal I would say not knowing at all. Benj we didnt trade much for him so it could be true that factored in the price why we got him for shit.

If what his attorney and agent say is true and whatever happened was an inadvertent by product of being in the wrong place at the wrong time then nothing comes of it. It may just be some crazy b&%ch looking for a payday. But like I said, trouble follows him like rain follows thunder so with Marshall you never know.
The price we paid was cheap enough to take a chance. We had an extra third to burn and there's no way we get a WR in three who could match him. Probably not one one either. That next years 3rd is equivalent to a 4th this year and if we make the playoffs the higher we go makes it more like a 5th this year.
If prior to this anyone would have asked whether or not I'd trade a 3rd and a 4th or 5th for Marshall I'd have said hell yes. All day long. If for no other reason it was time to honor some of Jay's requests and this makes him happy. It's good for our franchise QB to be happy and remain that way.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

dont get me wrong, I am glad to have him. Just question trading for someone who might miss a quarter of the season. But hell yeah, bring in him cause we need a real WR. Love the trade! Just wish this wasn't hanging over the deal

I'd be more upset if we didn't know; b/c that would mean we would have now twice failed in a background check on a player we were putting on our team.

Did we have an alternative? Vincent Jackson was a lock to go to Tampa. The other WRs were second and third tier

1. I would almost bet that we knew. Even if we didn't do the research (which would be hard to know since it happened in New York and did not even become public until now), I'm relatively confident that the Dolphins would tell the Bears as part of the deal for full disclosure. These teams deal with each other all the time, and they don't like getting screwed by each other like hiding information that was certain to be found out anyway. If it's something that they could have claimed "plausible deniability", that's one thing, but the Phins knew about it and they knew it would get out, so I'm sure we knew about it.
2. I'm also convinced that this is why we got him for the reasonable price we did. We were all wondering after this whole deal went down why the price was so cheap, and now we know.
3. As for Hurd, come on, no retired FBI guy is going to have the connections to jeopardize a multi-million Dollar under cover drug sting. In fact, any old connections that he had would probably lie to him and steer him in the complete opposite direction. The proper authorities are not going to risk the hundreds, if not thousands of man-hours to tell good ole Joe the Ex-FBI guy that now has a cushy NFL job about Sam Hurds involvement in a drug investigation so the Bears don't sign him.
Regardless, this is all irrelevant as Mr. Marshall is now a Bear, he's the best WR we have had since Willie Gault, he's one of Jay Cutlers best friends, and it will help us keep Cutler come extension time for him. I'm not crazy about Marshall's problems either, but he's here now and I hope he will be able to control himself.

Perhaps drafting a wr or obtaining Royal would help mitigate the situation. If we got Hill or Jeffery they could get valuable playing time then when Marshall is ready they settle into their roles a bit more.
