I would have liked to have gotten him for less but I'm glad we re-signed him. My guess is he got some offers and brought them home and asked the Bears to match them and they did. Apparently some of us are not the only ones who think he's got a future. Fringe guys don't get $3 mil offers especially TE's.

THAT would be interesting. The contract is said to be a 'show me' type with only about half committed in year 1, allowing a 'cut your losses' move in year 2 (year 2 salary said to be 2.4 mil). If another club gave him that offer it says that they view him as I do, not polished, not good yet, but near- or low-starter level with possibilities of improvement.

Off topic perhaps, but I always like to play with position switch ideas and one of the classic position switches is TE to OL as players go from hs to college and college to pro. I figure its too late in his career for such a switch now, but does Davis has all the size/frame to grow an OL body, does he have the agility? He might have made a better OT than TE. ... <end useless speculation>

I think it was our best option for the TE position. Now with Brandon Marshall taking double teams down the field and opponents having to respect Forte coming out of the backfield... a 6'7" beast in the middle will create some nice miss matches in open space and will be an easy check down target for Cutty if (i mean when) scrambling in the pocket.

I expect more out of Davis this year. He's had time to learn routes and know what's going on. "The Beast" should be for real.

LOL, it's never useless to think outside of the box. If I had to take a guess I'd say no. He's not a guy who could carry 300lbs. He's seems kind of lanky and I think he has a struggle staying around 270. On the other hand Spaeth may be be a guy who has the frame for it. It's all conjecture anyway. Trying to take them that way once they're pro's probably doesn't work all that well.

I haven't seen any of the details on Davis contract so you're way ahead of me on that score. Most likely something like a first year salary of $2 mil with a $1 mil SB and $2.4 mil the second year with some incentives. Not bad but not top dollar either and about right for a 4 year vet who may be on the verge of a breakout.
