    Resign Steltz?

Bears should shift focus to Steltz

Now that Bears general manager Phil Emery has taken steps to retain three of his own free agents (Tim Jennings, Josh McCown, Kellen Davis), one of the next orders of in-house business should be to re-sign safety Craig Steltz.

Rob Grabowski/US PresswireCraig Steltz has been a valuable special-teams contributor for the Bears.

Steltz has been a valuable asset on special teams for Dave Toub since he was selected by the Bears in the fourth round of the 2008 draft. The defensive back also proved to be a capable defender when he started the final four games of 2011.
Steltz finished the year with 48 tackles, 2 forced fumbles and a sack in just five total starts.
Given the injury histories of both Major Wright and Chris Conte, Steltz might find himself in a position to compete for serious playing time if he returns to Chicago. He would probably enter training camp as No. 3 of No. 4 on the depth chart, but if the Bears stage of true competition for the starting job, there is no telling if Steltz could unseat Wright, or if Wright can even stay healthy.
Although the Bears could probably bring back Steltz on a modest deal, it was be a wise investment moving forward.

I seriously disliked Steltz back a few years......I've learned to appreciate that he's a hardworking, hard hitter with a great motor. I hope he's back this year. At the right price of course.

I don't care for him but fact is we have only two safeties who both ended the year injured on the roster

I'd rather they re-sign Okoye first. Wouldn't mind seeing Steltz back in the fold, though.

Maybe signing Costanzo was a hedge we don't resign Steltz. Once everything else is taken care of and there is enough money and good price then yes resign him. Although I believe we are going to draft a SS so it's probably a moot point.

Steltz shouldn't be a tough guy to re-sign. I doubt he'll get much action elsewhere and he's a good fit for the Bears because of his value on ST. He's a good football player but not a great athlete . He hits, he tackles, he can create turnover and he's very instinctive but he's a step slow and that hurts him in coverage.

He's still worth keeping though. He's proven by his play last years that he's knows how to play productively within the Bears defense and I doubt he'd be as effective somewhere else. He shouldn't be an expensive guy to keep since Safeties are about the lowest paid position players on the team. I think only TE's average less. I think because we have two starters still playing on 3rd round rookie contracts he's affordable so we'll see what Emery does with his.

Maybe the good news is we're not hearing much about our guys visiting other teams. Maybe it's happening and it's under the radar because there's too many other guys to report on but it may also be that a lot of our guys are seen as being system players. More effective in Lovie's defense than they would be out of it. I don't think we'll find as effective a backup as Steltz is for less money unless we're willing to take a chance on another rookie and that leaves us with very little experience back there.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

No, he is a garbage safety because he's so ****** slow. I really think we need to draft one at some point this year, because there doesn't appear to be any good ones in FA.
