Well Manderson is no longer an issue unless NE is releasing him or he's already a UFA. Abrahams is gone and the Colts are still holding onto the hope someone will agree to pay Freeney $14 mil and take him off their hands. LMAO!

It's getting down to the "stems and seeds" in the DE market and if Wimbley wants too much I would most likely pass on him as well. There may be one or two good pass rushers in the draft when we pick but other than that the cupboard is bare.

It was tough losing Mincey at the last minute but I still think we got hosed by Condon on the MWill deal. He was Plan A and Mincey was Plan B and I don't we had a backup to Plan B because even I am having a hard time understanding how both slipped away. But....it is what it is so we need to look at the best alternatives we can and one of those alternatives is not to do nothing about it.

Could we sign both? Sure, if we can sign them to 4 year deals and the first year numbers aren't to big the chances are better. I'm not sure what we offered Mincey but I got the impression it was around $20 mil for four years. If we signed these two to similar deal with an $8 mil SB and $1 mil first year salaries the 2012 cap cost for each would only be $3 mil. You could sign both to a deal like that and still have $10 mil left.

We'll need some $$$ reserved for signing draftees and a emergency reserve for the season but that rookie money won't hit the cap until summer so there'll be time to clear more cap space if needed. We should actually be able to make at least 3 or 4 more mid level signings.
That's my back-of-the-envelope guestimate too. We also have two guys to release (Barber and Spaeth imo) that would free up several $ million more.

Seems like it comes down to your level of confidence in the draft. If you are going to go that route, you are pretty much committed to using the 1st round pick and there is no guarantee that "our guy" (which appears to be Nick Perry by the majority here) even falls to #19. Risks both ways.

Nick Perry is the guy here but around the web it seems the consensus is Mercilus. During an interview Mercilus did say the team to show the most interest in him and talk to him the most were the Chicago Bears, so there might be something to it. Who knows what direction Emery is going.

Yeah, about $4 mil or so and that would come in handy as far as adding one or two more guys. I'm kind of attracted to the idea of signing Bush to replace Barber if.s it's an even swap moneywise. Then replacing Spaeth with a much cheaper Andre Smith frees up some $$$ for a mid level CB like Hayden.

The conclusion I'm coming to is that we're gonna have to use that 1st round pick on a DE. If we're looking for a 3 down DE who can play LDE in rotation with Izzy I think it needs to be Perry or Upshaw. I could be dead wrong but I'm beginning to see Mercilus as a RDE pass rush specialist. I don't know if the kid has the overall talent and
football IQ to be a 3 down player.

He has huge upside as a pass rusher but I'm not sure about the rest of his game.

Didn't see any official "he's been released" tweet but there's this..

vaughn mcclure ‏ @vxmcclure23 The Bears are expected to look into Kamerion Wimbley now that he's been released. But money will be the issue, as with Mario Williams.

How confident are you in Upshaw or Perry? Aren't they both DE/OLB hybrid types? Just asking...

I really like Wimbley as a player and I would love to see him on the Bears, but I can't help but feel like he's best served to remain in a 3-4. The guys is going to give up 50 Lbs. to every Tackle he faces. Is his quickness enough to make up for it? I dunno. Makes me a bit nervous, but he IS a football player.

Yes and mainly because of their size. I think a lot of these hybrid guys are seen at either position but some can play out of a 3 point stance and some can't. Upshaw isn't much of a speed rush guy but from what I've read he's a brute and can anchor well and bull rush as a LDE. I think Perry is the athletic gem and speed guy. When he showed up at the Combine weighing 270lbs he got looks as a DE. Before then he was a 245-250lb rushbacker so I gues he could play either as long as he can maintain the right weight to the position. He's the kind of player you often see Pitt draft. I think the kid is a good football player and the problem I have with Mercilus is I think he's not a good football player if you catch me drift. Stupendous athlete vs heady player. JMHO.

I would sign Wimbley even if it cost us a chance to sign Okoye.

Wimbley is an impact pass rusher and would be an excellent compliment to what we have in Julius Peppers.

7-9 million and we are talking, over 10 million and I would have to pass.
