Marshall Opens Up About His BPD................................

New Bears WR Brandon Marshall wide open about personality disorder

    Updated: March 16, 2012 10:48PM

Over the last couple of years, six-time Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald has developed a friendship with new Bears receiver Brandon Marshall.

He has watched Marshall grow on and off the field — they are two of only three NFL receivers to top 1,000 yards in each of the last five seasons — and he has brought him in to speak at his football camp for middle- and high school students in Minnesota. Afterward, Marshall patiently advised the aspiring athletes on proper technique. He passed out the gloves off his hands and the cleats off his feet.

‘‘I have only had positive experiences with Brandon,’’ said Fitzgerald, who stars for the Arizona Cardinals. ‘‘He is misunderstood. Once you get to know him, he will give you the shirt off his back. ‘‘My thing is this: Get to know him, the man, before you pass judgment.’’

At his introductory news conference Friday at Halas Hall, Marshall graciously answered the sort of personal questions nobody wants to endure: If he can guarantee he won’t be involved in another incident such as the one last Sunday in New York, where a woman alleges he punched her in the eye at a nightclub. If he could explain why two other teams ultimately traded him. And if he — a soon-to-be 28-year-old man — should have a self-imposed curfew.

‘‘My arriving here comes with so much controversy,’’ Marshall said afterward. ‘‘But all I can do, moving forward, is to continue to stay on the track that [I’m] on.’’ Marshall insisted that ‘‘in due time, the truth will come out.’’ He acknowledged his history of off-the-field issues brings added scrutiny. Yet he doesn’t shy away from that spotlight.

On Friday, he talked about reuniting with quarterback Jay Cutler, winning a Super Bowl and even retiring as a Bear. But he has a grander goal: to be the face of those with borderline personality disorder, a mental illness that — according to his website, ProjectBorderline.com — affects up to 5.9 percent of the population.

‘‘That’s my purpose,” Marshall said, ‘‘and that’s what I’ll do after I’m done playing.’’
Before he was traded to the Bears on Tuesday, he was preparing to begin classes toward a masters in psychology near the Miami Dolphins’ training facility.

On Friday, he showcased his profound understanding of the disorder, dropping statistics, symptoms, treatments and — unfortunately — consequences when BPD is improperly treated.

‘‘A lot of people are afraid to talk about it — it’s taboo in our communities,’’ he said. ‘‘But I’m willing to use myself, make myself and my family vulnerable, to break the stigmas.’’
He noted the staggering number of prison inmates, both male and female, who have been diagnosed with the disorder, and he spoke passionately about the significance of his revelation at McLean Hospital in Boston last July.

‘‘Since I’ve been in the league, things have been very rough for me,’’ he said. ‘‘From Day 1, I’ve always wanted better for myself, on and off the field. To finally get an answer — to finally be in a place where someone can help me — that was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. But it was scary because someone is telling you, ‘Hey, you have to go through this therapy. You have to stay up here and talk to me.’ But the outcome was amazing.’’

Nicknamed ‘‘The Beast,’’ Marshall noted that his anger was ‘‘my gift and my curse, because without that passion, without that intense approach to the game, which comes from a lot of my pain, a lot of my anger, I wouldn’t be here today.’’ He said he has learned to channel and control those emotions.

Others, however, aren’t as fortunate. Eight to 10 percent of BPD sufferers commit suicide, according to Borderline Personality Today. ‘‘This thing is bigger than me. We’re losing lives,’’ he said. ‘‘When I was in treatment, there was a young lady who took her life.

‘‘It’s one of the most devastating disorders out there, but it’s the most treatable, and with the proper help and the proper treatment, we can make a huge impact in our community.’’ He recognizes that he’s not cured, that he still needs treatment. But, given his prominence, Marshall is willing to put himself at the forefront.

‘‘There’s a lot of people who are pushing to get healing in our community,’’ he said. ‘‘I’m just the guy with the fame, so it brings light to it quicker, and it spreads faster. So that’s why I was excited to use my celebrity and platform to raise awareness.’’ Those are admirable aspirations. But, as Marshall knows, actions speak louder than words
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Well at least there's a high level of awareness of his psychological issues and I have to applaud him for deciding to do something about it for more than just himself and his career. Many people enter the field of psychology because of their own struggles with mental disorders. I think those who do have a much better understanding of what their patients are going through and as a result they may make better therapists.

I do seriously question his statement that BPD is among the most treatable of all personality disorders. Any psychologist I've ever talked with about it has said just the opposite. It is very difficult to treat with talk therapy and often resistant to treatment with drugs used to treat other disorders.

That aside I'm not at all unhappy that we were able to trade for him under such favorable terms. Despite his personal problems it seems not to have affected his on field performance as he's continues to pile up 1000 yard plus seasons even with journeymen passers at QB. Being in the same league as Larry Fitzgerald says an awful lot about his productivity. I guess I'm cautiously excited about the fact that not only did we get a legit #1 WR but also one who was on the other end of Cutler's passes when he made the Pro Bowl.

I like this combo of Cutler, Bates and Marshall cooking up a passing scheme that may help us to compete with the other top passing teams in the NFCN. I doubt we could have done any better as far as acquiring a #1 WR for Cutler than Marshall and not have to give up the farm or burn a 1st round pick to get him as would be the case if we wanted to sign Mike Wallace.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Brandon Marshall must rebuild his reputation

    BY MARK POTASH mpotash@suntimes.com March 16, 2012 10:26PM

Brandon Marshall is introduced Friday at Halas Hall. | Brian Jackson~Sun-Times

    Updated: March 17, 2012 2:12AM

Maybe it’s because the sport is rooted in toughness, but it’s difficult to judge emotion in a football player.
When offensive tackle Ted Albrecht broke down and wept on draft day in 1977 while talking about Joe Roth, his quarterback at Cal who had died of cancer earlier that year, the Bears knew they had a guy with a lot of heart. Albrecht became a starter as a rookie and blocked for five of Walter Payton’s greatest seasons before retiring with a back injury.

When running back Cedric Benson shed tears of joy on draft day in New York City after being selected fourth overall in 2005, the Bears thought they had a guy with a lot of heart. But the flighty Benson never showed it in three disappointing seasons and didn’t become an impact player in the NFL until the Bears cut him and Benson signed with the Bengals.

So we’ll see about Brandon Marshall. The Bears’ newly acquired wide receiver surely won the hearts of Bears fans and probably softened many of his harshest critics when he spoke with sincerity and candor — stopping to compose himself on a few occasions — about the personal conduct issues that have stained his reputation and his battle with borderline personality disorder at his introductory press conference Friday at Halas Hall.

Bears general manager Phil Emery, quarterback Jay Cutler and newly signed backup Jason Campbell also spoke at the press conference, but Marshall’s emotion carried the day. ‘‘Wow. This is a very special moment for me,’’ Marshall said with a heavy sigh. ‘‘I couldn’t have asked for a better situation.’’

If Chicago could will an athlete to succeed, Marshall will be a huge hit next season. But it can’t. So it’s all up to Brandon Marshall to live up to the promise of the day that ‘‘this journey is going to be amazing’’ and realize his goal of ‘‘being an asset to this team, this organization and most importantly to the community.’’

It’s all there for the taking in a town that has been home to one Pro Bowl wide receiver in the last 40 years (Marty Booker in 2002). The Cutler-Marshall connection is the best quarterback-receiver at least since Ed Brown-to-Harlon Hill in the mid-1950s and maybe ever.

But as Marshall said, football is the easy part. ‘‘I can catch a ball in my sleep. I can make guys miss easy,’’ he said. ‘‘But the most important thing for me, my biggest goal, is to be [nominated] for the Walter Payton [Man of the Year] award. My mission starts in the community here.’’

The 6-4, 230-pound Marshall, who was suspended for one game in 2008 for violating the NFL’s personal conduct penalty, said he has ‘‘no fear at all’’ of being suspended again after being accused of punching a woman in the face in a New York City nightclub Sunday. ‘‘The truth will come out and we’re excited about that,’’ he said. But the alleged victim, Christin Myles, told the New York Daily News she wants Marshall ‘‘held criminally responsible for what he did to me.’’

Marshall said the treatment for BPD ‘‘was an amazing experience and made a difference in his personal life. The tricky part is taking the edge off his self-destructive personality without losing the edge that makes him a Pro Bowl receiver.

‘‘On the field it’s made me a millionaire . . . one of the best receivers in the league,’’ he said ‘‘But off the field, it made me the guy you guys are talking about on TV right now. That was the old me. I call it my gift and my curse. Because without that passion, without that intense approach to the game — which comes from a lot of my pain, a lot of my anger, I wouldn’t be here today.’’

For what we gave up I don't think we could have made out any better. Like you said we'd be sacrificing first rounders or a lot of players or something if we wanted someone else. The guy is a legit top 5 receiver and it's not easy to pry those away from teams especially when they're still in their prime. The fact he already has chemistry with Cutler makes him even more valuable. I won't demand a 100 catch 1200 yard season because anytime you set the bar that high you're flirting with disappointment.. but I am very excited to see our passing game next year. He's far and away better than any other receiver we've had on the field in years.

I hope within a couple years we have a guy opposite him to take some of the pressure off, while I trust Cutler and our other receivers to improve due to Marshall it's always nice to have two guys demand coverage so the defense can't take one out of the game without getting scorched by the other guy. It's like Peppers on the line. Although who knows, next season we could be watching Bennett get a 1k yard season of his own. I love Bennett and now that Marshall will attracting so much attention Bennett could have a hell of a break out year.

For him with Cutler throwing to him I don't 1200 yards is out of the question. I haven't seen him play in two years but if he's still the same guy he is truly a beast. He's too big and strong for most CB to handle and he has plenty of size to work the middle to field which is what Cutler wanted. RWill and his alligator arms sucked at it.

One of the more impressive things about Marshall is that he's continued to post big numbers playing with journeymen level QB's like Orton and Moore. What that says to me is that he gets open and he catches the ball (guy has huge mitts) and that's all Cutler is looking for. Bennett is good at hooking up with him because they have a history (extending him was smart) and now come Marshall who he also has a productive history with.

I'm excited about our offensive position this year. There's some talent there and if the line will gel like they were doing the latter part of 2011 we'll be alright.

I just don't think this passes the smell test. She says she wants justice and her focus is on the criminal and not the civil. I call "bullshit". The only way she can make a civil case stand up is to have him found guilty in a criminal court an which time she will certainly pursue a civil case the would not stand up to scrutiny now. I would probably dismissed for a lack of evidence before it even reached trial.

The woman is out of work which says to me unless she's independently wealthy she has very limited funds. So how does she afford the hourly fees of a "high profile" attorney. The answer is she can't but he sees himself getting a nice chunk of a civil settlement.

She wasn't hospitalized at the time but now all of sudden she has a serious eye injury that requires a doctors care??? I call "bullshit" a second time. Police were not called and there is no police report of the incident? How can a woman who claims to have been punched in the eye intentionally and seriously injured not want to file a police report even after contacting the police, or did SHE even contact them??? Why wouldn't she need to at least go to an emergency room to be examined immediately??? So I call "bullshit" third time. This is a setup for a civil suit if ever I saw one. She and attorney aren't fooling anyone.

Alleged punching victim says she wants Marshall 'held criminally accountable'

Brandon Marshall at Friday's press conference. (William DeShazer/Tribune photo)

By Jared Hopkins, Tribune reporter 2:19 p.m. CDT, March 16, 2012

The 24-year-old woman who alleges new Chicago Bear Brandon Marshall punched her in the face in the early hours of Sunday outside a Manhattan night club is a former basketball player at San Diego State University and has retained a high-profile attorney. (Where's the $$$ coming from for this beeotch?)

Christen Myles is cooperating with detectives
and met with her lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, Thursday at the 10th precinct in Manhattan, according to a statement from Rubenstein. (Of course she is. Why wouldn't she be. If criminal charges are to be brought the police have to do it not her attorney)

Myles, originally from Chino, Calif., told the New York Daily News, “my eye still hurts. ... I still have problem with my vision. ... I want him held criminally accountable for what he did to me.” (Must not have bothered you all that much right after it happened to not get immediate treatment)

According to the statement, Myles said Marshall “hauled back and punched her in the face, hitting her eye and caused her to be violently thrown to the ground.”

“She has a serious eye injury. She’s under the care of a physician,” Rubenstein said. “She still has problems with her eye.” (Well that would be a prerequisite if she's to have any kind of a case wouldn't it counselor? So now she has problems with her eye huh? Curious that didn't happen immediately. Eye injuries don't stick around waiting to develop. Either your eye was hurt then or it isn't hurt at all)

Rubenstein told the Tribune that there’s no consideration at this point into pursuing any civil lawsuits. (Now that's the biggest joke of all. You don't need to hire an attorney to file a criminal complaint against someone. Is the good counselor doing this pro bono because he feel sorry for her)

“The focus is on the criminal aspect of the case. She’s concerned with getting justice,” he said. (Yeah, uh huh justice spelled with a capital CASH settlement)

Myles was out celebrating her birthday with friends and family that night. Myles is currently in between jobs but moved to New York to pursue a career in media. (How very interesting that she should be out of work. So how does the attorney get paid what a high profile NY attorney does at about $300 per hour. Also why the human interest portion about her employment goals in the media where a damaged eye might make it more difficult to obtain work than as a department store clerk)

New York City Police received a report Monday about the alleged assault outside the tony club Marquee in Manhattan at about 3:30 a.m. An argument between a group of men and Marshall that had begun inside spilled outside when Marshall allegedly hit her. (But did they even investigate the report and if Marshall was clearly in the wrong why no arrest. Can't be hard to find a 6'4" 230lb black man even in NY when he's has high a profile as Marshall does.)
Police said Myles was not taken to the hospital. Marshall has not been charged. (Kind of a smoking gun there lady. In a case of assault against a woman police typically arrest first and let the courts take it from there. Little sketchy here I think)

    R
ubenstein said Myles is under medical care.

Christen’s mother declined to comment when reached Thursday.
(Well my, my, my even mommy isn't backing her little girl on this one)

Yes, there are certain advantages to being single again. When they turn into the Dragon Lady it's no fun. Wish they'd understand how we feel after a Bears loss. Especially those we should have easily won.

Oh don't get me wrong I think he's capable of 1200+, I mean he just put that up last year with junk at QB. I was just merely saying I'm not going to judge his season poorly if he fails to reach those high numbers next year. If he put up 1300 yards and 10 touchdowns I wouldn't be shocked, but I just mean I'm not going to be hating the trade if he fails to do so. After all the disappointment at WR I'd settle for 1000 yards. Plus when he bests that and puts up a shit ton of yards and TD's I'll be even more happy.

Was just reading an article about Marshall and this line made me chuckle.. "As I asked several more questions related to Marshall's reputation, Cutler sat nearby, shaking his head in disgust and cussing under his breath."
