He would make our nickel package VERY interesting with his drop and cover ability and athleticism to match up with all but the shiftiest of WRs. He is the guy we have been looking for to cover the TE while allowing Url and Briggs to run free for years. I would love him even in the first, I am that certain of his impact now and in the future. In this same sense, I wonder why we have not looked at Woodyard.
From what I could gather from scouting reports and write ups he's about as ideal a WLB in a cover two as you could find and he slips into round two because there are so many 3-4 teams that he doesn't fit their needs.
If you believe he won't last past the early part of round 2 maybe we should think seriously of trading up to get him. Our other third takes us all the way to the top of round two which should be enough to assure we get him. Ordinarily I wouldn't be in favor of that since we already traded one away but I think anytime you see a for sure fit for your team that you can buy with a 3rd round pick you do it. Depending on how things fall in one we may be able to trade down in the 1st and pick up a late 3rd or an early to mid 4th.
Would you do it for a guy of his caliber? I think it's something to pay real serious attention to with that issue with Briggs bound to rear it's head again. Just a little more leverage gained if we have a guy who can replace him already on the team.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I agree, Soul. I'd figured Zach Brown for a high-2nd pick but if he falls to 50, he'd be hard to pass up. Maybe him and Barron (whom I doubt will get out of the 1st) would be about the only 2 players I'd consider passing on Zeitler/Osemele/Konz for. Brown is the ideal Briggs replacement as a lightning fast top 4-3/Cover-2 OLB in this year's draft. If we took him, we could unload Briggs next year (esp. if he continues to bellyache) for a 3rd round pick to replace the one we traded away for Marshall. Maybe then we draft OL in the 3rd or 4th.

No, and just because I'm loving this OLB class' depth.

What other guys should we be looking at? In my mind if we can sign a FA like Hawthorne and draft another we add some youth and some depth. DeCicco has been a surprise and has played great on ST. He reminds me of Hilly but I'd hate to have him backing Uralacher right now. Roach didn't play that badly last year but we can upgrade at SLB and still have Roach as a good ST guy and backup.

With this market chalk full of quality LBs, I would ideally like to solve that right now so we can move on to other positions in the draft, but I can see why a staff would be hesitant if they like this class as much as me. I think Roach is an extremely mediocre system player and nothing more. Woodyard would be a giant boost over him. In the draft I love all of the following in rounds 2-4; Wagner, Kendricks, Bradham, Spence, Davis, David, Kaddu, Robinson, JMJ, Irvin, Acho, Carder, Franklin.

I think Carder may be a perfect fit for our current situation and I can't believe he's so low on a lot of these boards I've looked at. The guy could come in and start at SLB immediately and backup MLB as well as any in this draft past round two right off the bat, IMHO.

Wow, I didn't know this years class was that deep in OLB's. I think it still makes sense to sign one and draft one. There's no telling what we've got in Thomas and he probably didn't score extra points with that MJ arrest. As minor a deal as it was in the NFL it the mountain they make out of a molehill.

Sox, what do you think of Audie Cole? He's one of the most experienced LBs in college football and has started both inside and out. Demario Davis and Bobby Wagner have drawn rave reviews in particular in this list.
No matter who, there's a lot of LB prospects who should be available to us in the mid-to-late draft. Since we can still sign Hawthorne and draft one for depth possibly as late as 4 or 5, I'm inclined to prioritize a monster like Zeitler or Osemele in 2 given upcoming contract expirations and garza's age on the OL.

He's HX2 with better coverage skills. I would like to aim higher, but he would be a fantastic fifth or so rounder for SLB, where I see him being limited to.
