A Top Notch OG Who Should Last Until Round Two............

The guard prospect EVERYONE needs to know about

He wasn’t a Combine invite, but could be starting in the NFL from Day 1. Wes Bunting

    The Breakdown…

OG Brandon Brooks: Miami (Ohio) (6-5, 343)
    ICONBrooks carries his weight well.

Has experience playing left tackle and both guard spots, but his body type says more guard only in the NFL. He is a long armed guy for his size. However, possesses a physical make-up and carries his weight well. Struggles in space when asked to get out and pull. Looks a little top heavy, doesn't possess "plus" range when asked to get into the second level and lacks ideal balance when trying to breakdown and take proper angles. Has a tough time changing directions once he gets his momentum going and routinely will whiff into contact. Nevertheless, is a naturally strong kid in the run game as an in-line guy. Showcases good bend when asked to coil up into his stance. Did a much better job as a senior keeping his pad level down and running his legs through contact while staying engaged. Showcases quick hands off the snap. Doesn't have a real explosive first step, but is so powerful he can create a push in-line as a run blocker.

Does a good job sitting into his stance in the pass game. His size and natural power allows him to be a "plus" anchor player vs. the bull rush. Plus, his length again allows him to gain leverage into contact and he's really improved his punch as the year went on. Is an above-average athlete for his size and exhibits solid change of direction skills. But, isn't real technically sound with his footwork in pass protection at times. Doesn't stay real balanced, wants to be aggressive and get his hands on lineman, and will get caught lunging into contact.

Impression: Is a big, strong kid who has some lateral quickness for his size but needs some technique work. Nevertheless, has some upside and can win consistently in the run game and pass game and looks like an NFL starter in an angle scheme to me.

Here's another OG who fits into that category of a huge oversized lineman in the mold of guys like Nicks and Glenn. I know sox has had some positive things to say about him. If there is any consideration for moving CWill back to LT leaving an opening at OG then Brooks along with Zeitler may be one of those guys who'll be a good mid 2nd round pick. Sounds like more of a RG prospect than LG and I could see to people movers like Carimi and Brooks manning the left side for years to come.

I'm still not sold on the idea of using a 2nd round pick on an OG but I don't know what the plans are as far as shifting positions around and there's also the issue with the expiring contracts of three interior lineman after this season. With the Bears saying that Oline is not a priority I take that to mean we won't draft an Olineman in the first but I find it hard to believe they would ignore it completely.

I think this is the pick that will be tougher to project right now because there's good talent at several different spots in the second and the third rounds so who knows which way they'll go.

The OL needs an injection of youth and talent regardless of position as none of our guys are good enought to not be replaced.

I like everything that I see from Brooks, he has size, athletic ability and seems to be the type of guy that Tice loves to have. If we pass on Glenn in the 1st round and go DE I would add him to our list for the 2nd round,

    1. Kevin Zeitler
    2. Brandon Brooks
    3. Kelechi Osemele

The downside of Brooks compared to Glenn is that Brooks has no tackle ability.

I'd say about as much as Glenn has. It would shock me if either of these guys was moved to OT. Just as Tice thinks Carimi will be a far better RT than LT these two are pure OG's in the NFL. He's got the size Tice likes but remember Tice likes OT's who can move inside not vice versa.

The nice thing is that there's enough talent at OG to be reasonably assured of being able to get one of those guys in two IF that's the way we go but that pick will have lot's of competition from other positions. We've got WR's there, CB's there, and LB's there as well as these OG's.

I'm beginning to enjoy the mystery of the who this year more than last when it was very clear that it was OT and DT in either order in rounds one and two. This year should be more interesting because of the depth at certain positions.

I agree with you, Windy (on all but Carimi being potentially replaceable/upgradeable). Garza is playing well but he's nearing the end of his career, may have 2-3 years max in the tank. 3 other interior OLmen become FAs next year. The OL has been neglected and mis-drafted for a long time and this year looks like a great time to add promising new blood. I'd LOVE to get any one of those three you mentioned in 2...especially Zeitler.

Yeah, mentioned I really liked him way back at the Shrine Game. His feet at his size are a rare thing. Huge as hell, strong as hell, light on his feet and a team leader=winner. I don't really want an OG early, but he is a damn good prospect who has been underrated far too long.

I think we need to start replacing these average to below average players that we have.

Glenn managed to play well at LT in the SEC going against a couple of 1st round picks and he was able to hold his own at OT against Coples and Ingram at the Senior Bowl. I think he is a better option to play OT than Brooks.

I don't see Cordy hanging on the outside against the pros. Also, Coples destroyed every OT not named Mike Adams at the SB.

The only guy whose play I would rate as below average this past year was Webb. CWill played as well as he ever has and Garza makes it as a Pro Bowl alternate playing out of position. I can't see how we average 4.5 ypc behind a below average line. Martz passing schemes put more pressure on them as pass blockers than any other team in the league had to face.

We're not talking about one new guy here at the weakest link because there are no LT prospects likely to be around when we pick and I don't see 350lbs dump truck OG's playing LT. Would you sign Carl Nicks and move him to OT? These guys will make great OG's and mediocre to below average OT's and that doesn't gain us much. Lance Louis looks like he could be a very good OG but he was very average as an OT.

We should not "waste" a 1st or 2nd for the OL THIS Year.
