Hesters Role in the New Offense
Was reading chalk talk that touched on the Eric Weems pick up, here was Mayer's response.
The Bears didn’t sign Eric Weems because they wanted to push Devin Hester out the door or reduce his role. They’ve always believed in having as many good returners on the roster as possible, and that’s why they made the move. Weems, who was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2010 as a special teams player, also has excelled covering punts and kickoffs. I recently asked general manager Phil Emery about Hester’s role and he said: “We have a very dynamic plan for Devin. He will continue to return punts and kicks. We have a great tradition here in Chicago in terms of having multiple kick and punt returners. Johnny Knox and Devin, Danieal Manning. So we’ve had a really good mix. As coach [Lovie] Smith says, ‘You can’t have enough good returners and you can’t have enough good players.’ So we see Eric and Devin mixing very well.
Devin’s going to have lots of roles. He’s going to play wideout. … Coach [Mike] Tice with his offense may surprise a few people in terms of how he’s going to use Devin.”

I hope that means in the slot where most 3rd level CBs are going to have difficulty in covering him.

Doesn't suprise me. I have said, since about day one of the Devin Hester experiment, he would be deadly accross the middle behind the LB's and in front of the DB's, over the middle. And now w/a legit #1, he can now be used correctly. Hopefully he's a 4th WR on the depth chart, but even if 3rd(if knox is hurt) He should be a seriously scarry option when he's really having to be covered by just one DB.
If he doesn't light it up this year...he never will.

Good to hear. I find no sense in people wanting him to abandon WR altogether now that he finally has a couple guys alongside him who can push him into a role where he can actually thrive. I wish Drake could teach him how to catch and run the screen, though.

I don't want to abandon him; I just want the position upgraded, and even though I think he can thrive in a certain area, I also believe we could draft someone to do more then just be that 1 niche guy; and would help produce more overall.

There's a lot of stuff they can do with Hester if they're willing to move him around to create mismatches. When you have a #1 like Marshall who can play any one of the three WR positions having Hester out there can create some problems. If you line Marshall up in the slot do you move your #1 CB in to cover him and leave Hester with your #3 guy of do you cover Marshall with the #3?
There were a lot of reasons why our passing game was very average and one was we always seemed to have guys playing out of position attempting things that weren't what they did best. Hester was never cut out to be the X WR and at best he struggled as a Flanker but his speed makes teams pay attention to where he lines up. Now add Marshall and a healthy Bennett to the picture and teams have to figure out who they're gonna double. They can't cover them all with two guys on each.
There's no way to take them all out of the game like teams began to do with Bennett. That took away our most dependable target and forced Hanie into other throws. Now there's no way to do that and if they cover Hester with a Safety over the top one of the others get's single coverage and Cutler will love that. Sox made the comment that having Marshall would make the other receivers better. I think what it will do is make guys who have talent function better within the passing game because teams will need to play us more honestly.
I think we'll have far more respect for our WR at this time next year than we do today. They're not that bad. They've just been playing in a system that doesn't suit them very well. Let's see how it works now.

I think all the angst against Hester at wr is cause the FO since making him a wr have used him as the excuse why we need no new talent at wr. This is the first season we have moved on from that nonsense. I think we have so much hester fatigue that even him being used the way we have expected since the beginning of this experiment isn't wanted. I don't mind having him out there to stretch the field now all this he is a number one wr crap is behind us

Let's face it, the Hester experiment has been a total flop at WR. Not sure why people are expecting him to finally get a breakthrough under Tice. I'd prefer they throw him in there for a few plays a game and that's all. I'd like to keep him fresh so he remains the special teams weapon that he's always been when concentrating on special teams. We need another WR to take over the bulk of his playing time.
