Also, people seem to only be focused on Acquisitions, they seem to forget the smart SUBTRACTIONS Emery has made. Omiyale? Ruskell? Being a GM is more then just Drafting/FA, you can also have addition by subtraction.

Damn, I'm having the same problem with mine. We need to buy our mirrors at higher end stores.

Do what I do, stop looking in the mirror.

Sean Jensen just said Bears have around 7.5mil left in the salary cap according to a couple sources.

Well, just for the record, I have not forgotten about the subtractions, specifically the two that you reference. However, I don't think either decision was very difficult to make.
I just don't see all these special moves that has everyone enamoured with Emery (I'm not really refering to the OP, as this discussion has just progressed that way). In fact, like JJ-30 said in a couple of threads, this looks remarkably similar to the last few years with JA. If it does to you too, then what is the common denominator that remains from both administrations?
Look, honestly, I'm not trying to start anything, and I'm not suggesting that Emery will be anything but a very good GM for us. All I'm saying is that I'm not just going to hand that mantle of "Good GM" over to him without seeing something, and thus far, outside of the Marshall trade which was kind of a no brainer, I haven't seen much done that Angelo wouldn't do. That said, he joined the party late and was behind the 8 ball in terms of Pro Scouting as he has been focused on College scouting before joining us. He still has plenty of FA left to go and he still has the draft, but he's burned an awful lot of cap space on reserve and ST players while ignoring deficiencies on the O-LINE, DE, CB, S, and Matt Forte still isn't signed. Still a lot on his plate that has yet to be addressed to before we give him a good grade for the off-season.

This article is a great reminder to all of us not to get caught up in the hype ie : this guy is a 1st rounder this guy isn't etc etc. If u wanna look go to NFL.com and click news> draft > history and look at all the 1st rounders from the even not too distant past who : blow > are on IR > have been traded etc.
This is also why I pay no attention to the Mel Kiper's of the world when they issue a grade to every teams draft a week later. That shouldn't happen for a few years. It's rare when one draft turns a team around that particular year.
It's fun to speculate and even argue a little about who we should take - but most of the time .... a team's draft choices don't really change things that much.
Have a few IN A ROW that are good and you have a different story though.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?
A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

As far as Emery goes I think he will do well just to undo some of the JA deficiencies. Omiyale, Ruskell and the like were a start. Getting Marshall, some ST and Campbell are the other. Basically plug the holes before righting the ship in the direction he wants will take awhile. Emery still has to learn his way in the job. If he really did make a significant effort to get Mario then he's slightly ahead of the curve.
A few years and see things bear fruit or not will be the earliest sign. I believe it's a benefit for him to be with a mostly in-place team and coaching staff. Would probably be a much rockier road if he had an all new regime.

Soulman, I was wondering where my mirror went. Now I know. You can keep it by the way. LOL

I should hope so. The least talented and knowledgeable scout in the NFL knows more than the whole lot of us couch scouts combined, of this I'm sure. Won't stop me from giving my opinion.

I learned long ago not to side with any sportswriter's opinion. If it happens to be the same as mine; great. If not, I'm not going to lose sleep over it.
I'm assuming most of us are of age and reasonable intelligence to recognize great and/or questionable moves by The Bears front office. Hell, I'm not even a fan of the Fins and I can tell their GM is gutting that team and that the whole Manning press was a smokescreen.
I agree with 4DaBERS in that we can't (and shouldn't) be judging Emery just yet. Yes, the moves he's making are critical and (so far) are really good (I'm over the moon with the Marshall deal). But I'm not painting him as The Savior just yet. There are years and season results to be seen before making that assessment.
As for Smith having a hand in any of this, I can't buy that. He's self-admitted many times over the years that he's not all that familiar with the offensive side of the ball, or we would have seen more competent approaches in hiring an OC. Hell, Tice is still suspect. But going after a big-time elite WR like Marshall just smacks of someone other than Smith pulling that trigger.
I could be wrong. Would even be nice to be wrong about this. And it's IMO.
As for us registered posters making statements (posts) about the moves that have, haven't, and should be made... well, there' s no law against it. And pretty much, that's what this board is for. None of us take each other's critiques and opinions seriously (and, btw, you shouldn't), but we do like engaging each other's brain pan, just to see what falls out.
That writer, on the other-hand, by the nature of his job, presents himself as a psuedo-expert on what he writes about. Taking the Minnesota GM to task about possibly passing on Kalil just cements that perception. Gabriel did the right thing in dressing that dimwit down and it was fun to read.
