Ross Waffles on Comments About Marshall...............

Dolphins' Ross on Marshall report: 'That's in the past'

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross is ready to put talk about the Brandon Marshall trade behind him. (Miami Herald Photo / March 26, 2012)

By Dan Pompei, Tribune reporter 1:44 p.m. CDT, March 26, 2012

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins owner Steven Ross addressed a report Monday that he told an upset season-ticket holder that receiver Brandon Marshall would have been cut if the team couldn't have traded him.

At the NFL meetings, Ross told reporters, “That's in the past. That's history. It's behind us. It's a trade. He wasn't cut. We got fair value and we think the football team is better for it.”

The Dolphins ended up trading Marshall to the Bears on the first day when trades were permitted. The Bears gave up a third-round pick this year and a third-round pick next year.

Ross is known for saying things that aren’t necessarily 100 percent accurate. While it is accepted that new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin wanted to part ways with Marshall, it is implausible to think the Dolphins would have cut a player of Marshall’s caliber in March without compensation.

If the Dolphins couldn’t have traded Marshall in the offseason, it is likely they would have brought him to training camp to see if a trade market might develop for him after teams started losing players to injuries.

The Dolphins were looking to move on from Marshall in part because he was so hard on their quarterbacks, in part because Philbin was looking for different kind of receiver, in part because Marshall was high maintenance of the field and in part because they needed cap space.

I think there's a statement within a statement here too as it relates to the rumors about Forte.

If the Dolphins couldn’t have traded Marshall in the offseason, it is likely they would have brought him to training camp to see if a trade market might develop for him after teams started losing players to injuries.

The same thing could be said about Forte. It would make no sense to trade him for far less than his value now when his value just prior to or in the early hours of the draft might be at it's highest. Sometimes all it takes is for a team to miss out on a player they wanted to be willing to trade that pick for a top player at another position where they have a need that can't be filled in the draft. There's only one sure fire 1st round RB in this draft so after Richardson no other player would rate anything more than a late 1st or early 2nd at undoubtedly Forte is a far better back.

The other window of opportunity if he still hasn't shown up for camp is in the preseason where if a team loses their starter to a season ending injury the price they'd be willing to pay goes up and maybe we can swap for a player we need or a combo or player and pick. If we were to trade him this would be about the worst time I could think of to do it. The Dolphins found that out.

He was doing nothing more than pandering to the Phins fan base that are upset over loosing the only player that moved the chains in 2011 for them.

Does anyone really buy into the Dolphins cutting a WR that had 81 receptions in 2011? Second place Davone Bess had 51 receptions.

Marshall had over 1,200 yards. Thats more than double anyone on the team.

Seriously, traded was the only smart move. Cut? Never... Well, we'd probably cut a player like that.. haha

With any other team it would seem completely ridiculous but with the Phins only moderately ridiculous. What's Ross's real business. Whatever it is he must be far more successful at it than he is owning an NFL franchise. I think they're taking over from the Cards of yesterday and the Bears of the 90's as one of the worst run organizations in the NFL.

The rumor, for whatever that's worth, is that the Phins wanted to unload Marshall to free up cap space to pursue Manning and bring his Indy WR's with him. While that makes some sense I think they would have needed to clear out more than just Marshall for that to happen. I'd need to go back and look at the exact sequence of events but I'm betting Emery struck before Manning chose Denver and while Miami thought they might still be in the hunt and Ireland was under directions to unload him if he could.

Knox had 727, but I guess it counts if you consider the fact that he's unlikely to make any sort of impact next season.

Kind of sad to think that his career may be over. I guess I was too optimistic about the earlier prognosis. Well this will be Hester's opportunity to either prove he can handle the down-field threat role or chuck it in for good as an effective WR.

I'm actually wondering that with Tice running the offense just how much down-field throwing we'll do. He had Moss in Minny and since he wouldn't go over the middle there was no choice but to use him along the sidelines but that's not the case with this bunch. I remember that he loved to throw quick slants against us and try to split the Safeties for big gainers and I'm wondering if Hester can handle that role better than Knox could which was pretty much not at all.

..... cuz if someone wants your vote or your money, there's a good chance they're lying to you.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?
