I think you can do both build and add in FA if that one guy is there. You cant do it when you are spending money frivolously on backup G/OT. Makes no sense doing that when you do the right job with starters. That is why Im happy JA is gone cause he did that shit all the time.

That is why I think paying both Forte and Bush is going to end up hurting us in the long run. You take all that backup money and we got a few more starters. Your later picks should be the cheaper cap friendly depth guys and ST contributors. I think we work backwards with our approach

What OG/OT are we spending frivolously on? This is where the logic falls off the board for me mo.

If you're saying that $2.25mil is too much to pay for a vet OG/OC who showed an ability to at least hold his own as a starter than how much do you spend? If a guy like Grubbs is making $ 8mil and Nicks close to $12 mil I can't see how paying a 6 year vet less than 30% of Grubbs and less than 20% of what Nicks are making is over spending. EWill is only costing about 10% of what Nicks is making.

Maybe I'm missing the point but you can only have so many big contract guys on a team and OG's really are a dime a dozen when you get right down to it. The other thing about having backups like Spencer and EWill is that if we draft a young stud who can equal there play we can release them later this year without any cap hit. Once you get a $10 mil a year guy you're stuck with him for a while and that will hurt you when it comes to signing talent at skill positions.

As for signing Bush I doubt we'd have done it if Forte would have agreed to a new deal but it's not a waste to have gotten the best back available in FA for less than half of what Forte is asking for. Even if Forte signs Bush does what Forte doesn't which is get into the endzone in goaline situations. How much are those TDs worth when you figure out just how many times we end up settling for short FG's because we can't punch it in and how many times we end up throwing the ball on 3rd and two because we lack a power back to play ball control with.

Here again we can have both Forte and Bush for about what Nicks would have costs us and Carl Nicks can't score TD's. I'm not avoiding the issue of having good lineman but where do you draw the line as far as value is concerned. Is Ben Grubbs 3 1/2 times as good as Chris Spencer. Is Carl Nicks 5 times as good? I could see paying Ben Grubbs $8 mil per year if he could play LT but as an OG, no. Too much.

When we can go out and draft OG's even in the first round and pay those guys no more than $2-$2.5 mil tops and lower round picks maybe $1mil to $1.5 mil and get good production from them I can't see paying upwards of $8 mil for one I don't care how good he is. Not when my #2 QB and #2 RB cost me less than that and the lack of those guys is what cost me the playoffs not the lack of having Carl Nicks or Ben Grubbs.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.
