NFP's look at possible Bears 1st round options

Potential prospects available for the Bears at 19…

WR Michael Floyd: Notre Dame (6-3, 224)
Didn't seem quite as dynamic as a receiver when he bulked up in 2010. However, has looked sudden, explosive and showcased the ability to separate quickly and create after the catch as a senior. Is one of the draft's top receiving prospects.

ICONMercilus would be a great fit in Chicago.

DE Whitney Mercilus: Illinois (6-4, 265)
Physically he looks the part and has the skill to simply man handle college lineman at times. However, he's a raw kid who is stiff in the hips and doesn't have a great feel for the game when asked to find the football. He's got some upside, but his tightness and overall lack of natural feel for the game are two very big concerns that will keep him from being the type of pass rusher his freaky skill set says he could.

OT Jonathan Martin: Stanford (6-6, 304)
He's got the NFL size, length and overall athletic skill set. However, he's not a natural anchor player and doesn't strike me as a guy who is ever going to be real physical at the next level. He can mirror in space, but struggles to stick through contact and isn't real heavy handed. Looks like a finesse tackle who will get over drafted because of athletic talent, but is going to have a hard time keeping the edge clean at the next level.

Quinton Coples: North Carolina (6-6, 285)
Can be as good as he wants to be in the NFL. The game comes very easy to him and he can be dominant if he learns to use his arms even better to slip blocks in the pass game, but with more time I expect that to improve. The sky is the limit as long as he's willing to work at his trade and keep his motor running.

WR Kendall Wright: Baylor (5-10, 190)

In the same mold as a number of Pittsburgh Steelers receivers (Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders) and can be effective both inside and out making plays down the field at the next level.

I don't see this any differently than I did before except I still have a difficult time believing teams will allow Colpes to slips to #19. Even if he does Lovie and Co. need to figure out whether or not they can light a fire under the guy so that he plays at 100% of his capability to do so. His rep says otherwise.

Martin isn't a fit for a Mike Tice type OT and after having traded for Marshall, Floyd and Wright come into play only as BPA guys in my book who we take only if all other options have been extinguished and I don't believe they will be.

I think a couple of others you could add to this list are; Perry, Kuechley, and even Cordy Glenn. He's the OT who plays OG prospect. DeCastro's another given if he ever lasted until #19 but I think we'll probably find out where Jimmy Hoffa is buried before that happens.

When it comes right down to it Mercilus is the guy whose name keeps popping up in every single list like this. The need for a pass rusher is apparent. He's also begun to set some peoples minds at a relative ease as far as his only having one productive year in college so far. Even some of the prior criticism of his technique problems seems to have subsided.

Other than the obvious need we have for a pass rusher the other reason the Bears are almost a perfect fit for him is named Rod Marinelli. If he needs coaching to be all that he can be few teams are better prepared to offer it and few teams have a demon pass rusher to mentor him like Juilus Peppers. I'm not without my concerns about the kid but one thing Mericilus doesn't lack is natural pass rush skills and a motor to go with them.

If he's on the board at #19 he's our guy.

These guys seem to be the best case scenerio for us. Any of them would be an instant long term improvement to the team.

    .
I agree and think Mercilus is the player most likely to be our 1st round pick all things considered (need, availability, interest shown, scheme fit, etc). It wasn't lost on me how quickly Izzy was re-signed as soon as the Mario/Mincey FA gambits failed. I doubt he would have been kept around if either of them had been acquired. Its seems like the club knew it didn't want Wimbley and would need a vet like Izzy to shepherd a rookie along. I'm a lot more comfortable with Perry or Mercilus (both are only juniors) knowing we have Izzy to run stuff and the rook will just play pass rush until ready to take over 3 down duty.

I don't think I'd like if we picked him up at 19. If that's who we're targeting, I'd like to trade back.

I don't claim to know the tape like others do, but from what I've read he would be the best option left if all the others we discussed were off the board early. He probably wouldn't be available at 50 and 19 might be too high for him so a trade down to the low first (netting another pick) would be a good play there. he seems like the best pass rush option for us after the top guys are gone.

I think Branch is Mercilus "light". Similar size and abilities but without the upside of Mercilus. Branch is a 2nd round option is we either miss on Mercilus or we decide to go a different direction than a DE in the first. Guys like him and Curry are probably solid enough 2nd round picks. They're the Paea equivalents of this years draft.

I think no matter how you slice it if we don't take a pass rusher in one or two we aren't gonna get a guy who can contribute in the way we have a need for someone too. Some of the top 5 or 6 guys are gonna shake out as OLB only so the closer we get to the draft the more the pure DE list will shrink and guys like Branch will creep up a bit.
