Pompei: Lovie Active in Scouting
By Dan Pompei, Tribune reporter 11:27 a.m. CDT, March 28, 2012
PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith has been traveling around the country to look at draft prospects like an area scout in recent weeks. He explained why Wednesday at the NFL meetings.
Smith said he has had more time to attend pro days in part because the Bears haven’t made any changes defensively or on special teams.
“I’m going out a lot more this year than I have,” Smith said. “Some years it’s that way. You look at the landscape.”
Smith said he wants to see as many prospects as possible.
One of his visits was to West Virginia, where he observed Bruce Irvin. The defensive end weighed in at 248 pounds, but Smith said that is plenty big.
“You know the type of defensive ends we play with,” Smith said. “Weight is overrated. I remember I coached Leonard Little at St. Louis. He came out at 237. He played at about 250 at the most. It’s more about the strength than the numbers. As long as a guy can run and he has strength.”
At Georgia Tech, Smith got a good look at Stephen Hill, a 6-4 wide receiver who ran a 4.36 40 yard dash at the combine.
“He’s a fast guy with size,” Smith said. “He has unbelievable ability.”
Hill played in a triple-option offense and finished his career with only 1,248 receiving yards.
“In college it’s what your offense is doing,” Smith said. “If a player like that is in an offense that threw the ball to him every snap, what would he do then? You have to project a little bit on what you think a player can be. He’s in a running offense, so one thing he’s probably worked a lot on is blocking. So that’s a positive coming in.”
Then Smith put his tongue in cheek.
“But he doesn’t have the numbers, so he’s green,” he said. “Why would you want to go on a guy like that?”
Smith saw another fast receiver at Baylor in Kendall Wright. At the combine, Wright ran a 4.61 40 yard dash, but at his pro day he ran a 4.41.
Smith praised Wright for having a great year and said he thinks the faster 40 time is more reflective of the player’s ability.
“When I watch video, I don’t want to see all these bad plays,” he said. “If we’re coaching a guy up to his max, OK, what can he be? It’s about the ceiling, always. This is what he’s capable of doing.”
Smith said there is an added benefit of going to pro days: he is able to watch spring practices.
“If there is a college workout going on, I’m going to work it so I can stay or get in a little early,” he said. “You can see a padded practice now. Some of them are doing different things. I spent an entire day in Baylor to see how Art (Briles) ran their offense -- no huddle, up tempo, getting at the line of scrimmage with 30 seconds left.”
Smith might come away from pro days with more than a draft prospect.

Irvin is another one of those guys who worry me. He has some character issues in his past and even if those are no longer a problem he's a part time college rushing specialist who played 15-20lbs lighter than he is now. There are guys projecting him at 260-270lbs eventually yet I look at his photos from the Combine and I don't see a frame that can carry that kind of weight.
Who cares how much Leonard Little weighed this isn't 2001 and we aren't the St. Louis Rams. Maybe you draft a guy like Irvin in the middle rounds as a project to develop and you don't risk much if you fail but I would hope Lovie doesn't see this kid as an answer as far as a 2012 pass rush solution is concerned. This would be a Henry Melton type pick of a guy who may start making noise a year or two from now.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Oh lord, please tell me Lovie's travels are all smoke. If this draft looks like our drafts over the last 5 years, we'll know who has really been in charge of personnel, and worse yet, who still is. I seriously hope Phil is the guy and he's just sending Lovie out as an extra set of eyes.

Maybe unlike JA, Emery wants Lovie to be out there looking at darft picks.

Emery has a much different personality than JA and you may be picking up on that too. It seems to me that JA needed to be involved in everything and keep a high profile whereas Emery works behind the scenes and let's others carry a higher profile.
The next indication I got of that was what happened with the Forte situation. It was Lovie who spoke up about his communication with Forte and Phillips who spoke up about putting a new offer on the table. In the past JA would have been front and center in all of that whereas Emery now seems to be consumed with getting ready for the draft and doing his last minute evaluations of the rookie prospects.
He's using Lovie as an extension of himself so it shows that he trusts his opinions about these guys. I also don't see Emery's ego being as large as JA's. Just the fact that he's keeping a lower profile and staying away from the press more than JA ever did is telling. To me it seems like he's bent on making an impact personnel wise as quickly as he can. He's making some pretty bold moves as it relates to the offense. There's been some serious money spent on upgrades at skill positions and in retaining a couple of key players and I'm not sure he's done yet.
I would love to see him add an OT in FA so he can use the front end of the draft to fill a couple of the holes on defense. Lovie says what he always does about it but he also hedges enough to tell me they're on the lookout for anyone who can compete. We just don't have much more $$$ we can devote to it so they're bargain hunting which is what this last signing tells me. I just wish they could put the Forte deal to rest and gain back some cap room.

Soul, how much cap do we have left? Not much I figure even with Barber retiring. Can we still re-sign Okoye?

on the mainboard db54 has us a shade under 10 mil
probably should figure 4 mil to rooks and a few mil for injuries later in the year
we also have a 3 mil vet exception I think

I agree Soul this is a smart move by Emery to keep himself in the background.
The less people know about Emery and who Emery is looking at the better it is for the Bears on draft day.

I'd say that's pretty accurate. I had it around $6 mil without adding back in the LTBE bonuses that weren't earned and I ball parked those at $2_$2.5 mil. There may be some vet exceptions that will add back in too.
As for the draftees they don't begin to count against the cap until they're signed and the reserve is always based on where you pick and how many picks you have. So there's time to clear more cap space down the road if needed. As long as Okoye remains unsigned I'm guessing we're keeping some reserved for him as well.
