Bears take a look at free-agent tackle Goldberg
    By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter

    8:54 a.m. CDT, April 11, 2012
After first kicking the tires on Anthony Herrera, the Chicago Bears have taken a look at another free-agent offensive lineman with ties to offensive coordinator Mike Tice.

According to Howard Balzer of 101 Sports in St. Louis, tackle Adam Goldberg has had a tryout with the Bears. Goldberg has been with the Rams since 2006, but he broke into the NFL in 2003 with Tice and the Vikings as an undrafted free agent from Wyoming.

Under Tice, Goldberg went from the practice squad that first season to starting 12 games at right tackle in 2005.

The 6-foot-7, 305-pound tackle has played in every game over the past four season for the Rams and made 44 starts. Goldberg, 31, would come with experience and that is what general manager Phil Emery said last week he is seeking.

“Trying to find the right competitors to come in here,” Emery said. “The right players that fit for us and what coach Tice is asking and keep pushing the competitive level of the group.”

Herrera remains on the open market, so either the Bears didn’t like what they saw when they brought him in four weeks ago at the start of free agency or he didn’t like the contract they offered.

Goldberg likely could be signed for the veteran minimum or close to it. It’s a buyers’ market and there are a host of experienced linemen seeking jobs.

Nice thing about these 10 year plus guys is that you can sign them for a vet minimum but they only count about half that against the cap. It's known by the NFLPA as the "full employment for semi-washed up journeymen clause" of the CBA.

If the guy can play LT there's nothing wrong with kicking his tires. At the very least we need backup and the guy can't be any worse than OMG. So they sign a guy like this and bring him to camp as vet competition. Whether he makes the team or not at least Webb gets competition and he's not just handed the LT job again.

We may end up drafting an OT somewhere along the line but as far as experienced vets go this is about all there is to be had guys. Doesn't cost a nickel to look at some game video and talk to the guy.

Dollars to donuts Louis will be starting at LG this year. If Potter or some other draftee has potential to develop as a LT that would be a good pick in the middle rounds. I'd like to see us get one OG and one OT out of this draft.

So would I Soul. We need a vet swing tackle & a young guy to add to the mix. Not saying Goldberg is the guy but they will need to bring in a vet.

Lance Louis did well at RT imo. Here's what I would do.

    - Keep Louis at RT
    - Keep CWilliams at LG
    - Move Carimi to LT
    - Draft Oklahoma State's OT Levy Adcock (5th round) - He can play T and G, would be a great backup
    - Draft a C for the future (4th round), p. ex. Baylor's Philip Blake

    LT: Carimi, Webb
    LG: CWilliams, EWilliams
    C: Garza, Blake
    RG: Spencer, Henry
    RT: Louis, Adcock

    Problem solved.

He really didn't lb. He gave up 10 sacks in fewer games than Webb gave up 14. He looked OK for a few games but then team began to solve him and KC ate him alive in one game. You could play him at OT in a pinch like we had to last year but the guy is a pure OG in the long run.

Goldberg has played both LT and LG for the Rams. He's known as being more of a finesse player and a better pass blocker than a run blocker. He started at LT for the Rams before Saffold beat him out of his spot and then he moved to OG. I'm not saying don't draft a LT but anyone we draft in the mid to late rounds won't so us much good this year. So you find a guy like Goldberg (and it may be someone else), sign him cheap and bring him to camp. If he wins a spot he takes up very little more cap space than a rookie and you can probably trust him in a pinch more than you can any rookie mid round pick. Plus you get some vet competition for Webb during camp. A 5th round rookie pick isn't gonna be much competition for Webb but a vet may be able to both push him and help coach him.

    LT Carimi (yes I'm dreaming)
    LG Cwill
    C Garza
