Manning has the potential of making the Pro Bowl with his ability to cover, yet Jerry Angelo didn't want to fork out the money to keep him. Now he is in Houston where he is helping make that team's defense into a monster of a unit, while the Bears' secondary struggles.
I agree looking back now, not resigning Daniel Manning was a real bad move. It wasn't even a crazy contract he was offered by the Texans (four-year deal worth $20 million with $9 million in guarantees). He had a great year for them last season and I'm still not sure what to make of Major Wright at this point. I really hope Wright surprises us and becomes a stud because we need stability back there. We can't continue drafting safeties every other draft.

Hopefully both
Its a number, not a doctor or coach.

There is this trend with Lovie Smith's defenses that he likes turnover at S. It's almost like he uses safeties while they're young, and then as soon as their first contract is up, the Bears opt not to re-sign them. Well, it cost them dearly with Manning because Chris Harris, who is a good man and I have talked on a few occasions on Facebook, just didn't play very well last season and he, too, was released shortly after his disastrous performance in the game at Detroit on Monday Night Football. I'm hoping that Emery will bring some stability to the position and force Lovie's hand there, but one can never be too sure.

My problem is for a long while they never really targeted a FS with FS skills until Conte. They just kept shuffling in SS guys. Manning was never the FS type and would have been smart to keep him despite the extra million for a starting SS and a top KR. You put those years in developing him and then when you could reasonably retain him you let him go and your back to the seeming merry-go-round.
I still don't know if Wright is the answer Dags. If a SS is drafted high we will know that they might not think he is either.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Especially if it's someone like Harrison Smith. If they draft him, you know they're out to make that position cherry for a while. And according to what interviews I've read with Smith and an analyst, he can play either position.
