And had Rodgers and Vick running scared.

And Corey Wooton KNOCKED Brett Favre OUT.

Peppers was really a monster that year....was fun watching the Bears. The Eagles game was probably one of the most memorable Bears games I've watched.

What was different that season? We had a line of Idonije AAdams Toeaina Peppers.....and last year we had Melton, Okoye, Toeaina and rookie Paea in the mix too....I think our interior DL has improved (in pass rush anyway) since then.

So why have our sacks/pressures gone down?

Must be either Peppers or Idonije....The consensus here seems to think it's Idonije but is it possible Pep had an off year, or had an injury?

I was expecting our DL to be a monster this season with the addition of Okoye and the growth of Melton....but somehow it declined.

Either way we definitely need some youth at the DE position.

I'd be overjoyed with Coples he's just a physical specimen and I think he's a natural football player and the motivation issues will be nothing.

Mercilus isn't as gifted physically and he seems raw and isn't great against the run, but he's a natural pass rusher and has a knack for sacks. Last player to have a season like Mercilus was Daquan Bowers and he was being looked at as a top 3 pick before he hurt his knee in the offseason.

Watching tape on Mercilus he gets lost during the run but he holds his ground against big OL...he looks like a damn strong bastard and with a little more time and coaching he has the physical abilities to be a top DE against both the run and the pass.

While they seem like high risk players I think they're both gonna become pro bowlers.
You are gravely mistaken about Peppers. Peppers' sack totals actually went up in 2011 to eleven from the eight he had in 2010. However, there was a notable difference in that Idonije also had eight sacks in 2010, and his production dropped by almost half.

Soul, forgive me for not tagging the post where you mentioned the lack of depth at DT. I lost my place and never could find it. But I'm still going to comment on it.

Right now, we have a three man rotation at defensive tackle, which was essentially what we used last season since Paea went largely untouched until the first Vikings game. Paea is looking more and more like he's going to be both a pass rusher and a run stopper because in the short time that he was active last season, he produced two sacks. He's an absolute beast, and along with Melton, our sack total should remain high from the three technique and NT positions.

To be totally honest, I'm a little shocked that Peppers didn't get at least two to three more sacks last year, but the idea that the thin depth at the position caused him exhaustion and the fact that he battled a bum knee off and on throughout the season probably played a huge role in his "lack of production."

Seems like a guy who would play big for a contract then peter out once he got paid with that type of mindset.

I agree. That's why I'm slowly starting to learn toward Mercilus over Coples. At least you know what you're going to get out of Mercilus. Plus, and I'm going by what the mocks are saying this week, Coples won't last beyond pick #15.
