    LB McIntosh to visit Bears

Rocky McIntosh to visit Chicago Bears, sources say - ESPN Chicago

    Sources: McIntosh to visit Bears

CHICAGO -- Veteran free-agent linebacker Rocky McIntosh is scheduled to visit the Chicago Bears this week, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.
A former second-round draft choice out of the University of Miami, McIntosh played six seasons for the Washington Redskins and started 69 regular-season games at both inside and outside linebacker.
He recorded 80-plus tackles in four straight seasons and had a career-best 110 in 2010. During his six-year career, the 29-year-old linebacker has 471 tackles, eight forced fumbles, eight sacks and three interceptions.
McIntosh returned to the Redskins last season on a one-year deal, but eventually lost his starting spot to second-year linebacker Perry Riley.
The free agent also is known to have visited the Miami Dolphins.
The Bears are in the market for experienced depth at linebacker behind veteran starters Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Nick Roach. Rounding out the depth chart at the position are two former undrafted rookie free agents, Dom DeCicco and Patrick Trahan; former St. Louis seventh-round selection Jabara Williams; the Bears' 2011 sixth-round pick, J.T. Thomas, plus newly signed special teams ace Blake Costanzo.
Thomas spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve and was arrested in the offseason on a misdemeanor drug possession charge.
Urlacher and Roach both have one year remaining on their current contracts. Briggs recently was rewarded with an extension and is under contract through 2014.
He's a much better fit for the Bears 4-3 defense than he was in the 3-4 Skins defense. He'd be a great pickup. I worry about how thin we are at LB after our older players, Urlacher and Briggs. It would be sick to see our season tank due to a failure to add solid depth at LB. It's an "accident waiting to happen" just like the Cutler debacle last year. Depth can make or break your season. We learned this the hard way.

Yeah lb, we've actually been after this guy for years so he must be a good fit for our defense. Seems to me I remember the Bears trying to get him included in a trade we trying to make with the Skins some years back. Good guy to have as a SLB or a backup to Urlacher. I hope we sign him.

You covered his pro career and here's what his scouting report said about him coming out of college. The guy has been a top ranked competitor his entire career. I'm wondering why Washington let him go unless there's an injury problem and his play suffers now because of it. When you read this report you can see why Lovie would like him on his team. He's got the kind of athleticism and cover skills he likes.

Might be an upgrade over Roach and surely as better backup prospect at MLB than DeCicco. Not having any experienced backup behind Urlacher makes me nervous. Hilly was a great backup there when we had him but we've never replaced him and maybe that's what this is about. This seems like another one of those Emery moves to add insurance depth just like Campbell and Bush were.

    Roger McIntosh
Washington Redskins Outside Linebacker Round 2 (35) Miami
Stength: Roger McIntosh, also known by Rocky McIntosh, has near ideal athleticism and speed for a linebacker. Roger McIntosh has the athleticism to play outside linebacker and the intelligence to play middle linebacker. Roger McIntosh can more than adequately stuff the run, chase the run, cover zone, cover man to man, and blitz the quarterback. Roger McIntosh was consistently productive against top college football competition while playing for Miami. Roger McIntosh is a full effort, tough player in practice and in games.
Weakness: Roger McIntosh didn't show any spectacular physical features or athletic gifts at the combine and predraft workouts, save his vertical leap. Roger McIntosh has a good frame, but he may need to carry more weight to handle NFL size players. Roger McIntosh has had a little trouble with getting pushed out of his lanes on good cutbacks and well-disguised reverses.
Development: Roger McIntosh was drafted much later than he should have been for a guy who is ready for the move to the NFL and has all of the necessary tools to be a top notch NFL outside linebacker. That is not to say that Roger McIntosh doesn't still have a lot of technique to work out before the season begins. And, Gregg Williams schemes could leave his head spinning a few weeks into the season. But, Rocket McIntosh is ready to step in as a starter and blast off on a strong NFL career at some point this year. He has plenty of college experience at the highest level, abundant intelligence and desire to learn, and a good work ethic. Roger McIntosh shouldn't have to worry too much about the competition. Robert McCune is a physical beast with the best speed on the team at linebacker, but has only special teams experience in the NFL. Warrick Holdman has had a solid career, but was the defense's weak link in 2005. Chris Clemons could win the starting job with a great training camp, but more likely battling for an active roster spot. Roger McIntosh should take the starting outside linebacker job before the year is over, but at the least will be in the linebacker rotation because of his mental and athletic versatility.
Fantasy Football Rating: Roger McIntosh should be above average statistically when he becomes a starter, similar stats to what Marcus Washington and Lemar Marshall put up in 2005.
Typecast Outlook Opinion: Ready to play. 85% chance of succeeding in the NFL. 60% chance of being a Pro Bowl player.
Next 2006 Rookie: Anthony Montgomery's SMSG scouting report.
Go back to Redskins 2006 Rookies List.

I think some of those articles about us having just a few mil of cap space left are subtracting the rookie reserve from the $8-$10 mil I had it at a while back. Take a $4 mil reserve away from $8 mil and it comes close to that $3.8 mil number I recall a few weeks ago. The thing is the rookie contracts don't count against the cap until the deals are signed so we have time to free up more space.

This would be a very nice pick-up. If I recall, we were considering him off the Washington squad as a trade back a few years ago when Briggs was threatening the first time. He would push VERY hard for the starting SAM spot and as stated above would be an excellent back-up to Urlacher, especially since Lacher is coming off that bum knee.

Go ahead and sign him up Phil. Actually, this and the Rachal signing are very nice (if this in fact goes through) right before the draft. The stock of each could go up marginally after the draft for those teams that lose out on middle round targets. Grab them while you can, knowing you can cut them later if you get what you target in the draft.

If Emery and Lovie think he can do a job for us then I hope we can sign him. It's the April pre-draft "white sale" for left over FA's. This is where the bargains come from not that first week. These guys are now one or two year signings for short dollars. They've been out there for over a month now with no serious offers so they're signable.

Guys like McIntosh and Rachal came out of college as high picks and a guy like Emery has certainly had some experience scouting and evaluating them before. Maybe they were guys he liked when they were drafted but his team wasn't in need or a position to take them. It's vet depth or competition in camp on a budget and sometimes you get real lucky.

We've gotten decent play out of some of these types. Jennings, Okoye, Toeaina, Spencer and even Garza some years ago. These guys were all picked up from somebody else in the offseason and all have played starting roles and done fairly well. You don't get All Pros at this point in FA but you don't pay them like All Pro's either. It's hard to argue with the fact that an experienced vet pickup at this time is as least as good and better prepared to play now than a mid to late round draft pick or UDFA.

The Bears recently worked out free agent LB Geno Hayes.

Hayes has experience in a defensive scheme like Lovie Smith's, having played in Raheem Morris' Tampa 2. The Bears have worked out a flurry of veteran linebackers this week, also including Rocky McIntosh, Zac Diles, and Bryan Kehl.

Well here's the poop on Hayes. A little undersized but has a good rep as a player from his college days. Starter for the Bucs his last two years and most importantly played in a similar defense which his college scouting report emphsizes as being an importand contributor to his potential success in the NFL. Nothing astounding but seems like a solid player.

Emery is progressively finding ways to upgrade our depth. If there was one major area where I feel we have lagged behind the Packers recently it's this. We could always match up reasonably well with them on the field but there bench strength was so much better. Hell those guys helped them win the 2011 Super Bowl.

Atempts to upgrade areas of need with vet depth makes a ton of sense to me. We take better care of the now this way and then draft some youth to develop for the future in competition with these guys. This is actually a more interesting time during FA than those first 10 days to two weeks when all the big dogs go. This is where the bargains are.

    Geno Hayes Scouting Report

    Position: ILB
    Conference: ACC
    School: Florida State Seminoles
    Year/Status: Drafted
    Jersey Number: #10
    Height & Weight: 6'1 - 226 lbs.
Drafted 6.9 in 2008 by TB

2008 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
    Geno Hayes, ILB, Florida State

There is little doubt about Geno Hayes' ability on the field. As a junior during the 2007 campaign, the linebacker tallied 80 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and an interception. When he was healthy he was the most dominating player on the Florida State defense. Hayes is a superb athlete who can put on the big hit and his quickness makes him a great sideline-to-sideline player. He has the skills to drop back in coverage and that versatility projects him to play the inside or outside linebacker spot. However, there are some concerns on and off the field. Hayes is a little undersized for the NFL and measured in at just under 6-1 at the combine. He will often run around blockers and lacks the strength to run through them. A career filled with injuries will also keep some teams away, but it is the off the field issues that will likely drop Hayes down to the middle rounds of the NFL Draft. He has had a couple run-ins with the law and the most recent was just resolved prior to the combine with the dropping of all charges. At the combine Hayes showed off his quickness and natural abilities, but the interview process was the most important. If teams believe his off-field issues are behind him, Hayes has the talent to be a third round selection. Hayes was also one of the many involved in the Seminoles academic scandal prior to this year's bowl game. Hayes has the skill and versatility to be a valuable linebacker in the right system. By the fourth or fifth round any team who was sold during the interview process would be happy to have his versatility on their team.

Windy, I recall you calling out McIntosh for us as a good FA target way back in one of your first offseason mocks a few months ago. That was strong work on your part. RM is a pretty decent vet LB who is much better suited to play in a 4-3 like ours rather than a 3-4 like he has.

I think we all went into this offseason knowing that we had obvious "second-tier" depth needs at CB and LB. Signing Hayden helped the former (we had NOTHING behind the starters once Graham and Bowman left) and I hope we can address the latter as well. Behind our front 3, we have ZILCH at LB in terms of veteran backups. Costanzo is mainly a STer and none of the other players on the roster (DeCicco, Trahan, Thomas, JWilliams) have any significant playing experience. They were all either UDFAs or late-round draft picks as well. We were very lucky that we didn't have any significant injuries to our starting 3 until week 17 last year when we were already eliminated anyway. Man, we could sure use one veteran backup who can and actually HAS played the position...or even to push Roach down the depth chart to be the vet depth guy.

I'm glad Emery is kicking the tires on these guys and can land us one to go with another (prob 3rd-5th round) draftee.
