Would Trading Down be Smart?.................
Bears might be smart to trade down in draft
Acquiring extra picks could be beneficial for Emery
Dan Pompei On the NFL April 24, 2012
The way I see it, this draft isn't about acquiring one player who can push the Bears over the top. It's about acquiring a number of players who can help establish a foundation for the future.
The Bears have a solid core of veteran players who can compete for a Super Bowl. What they don't have is enough young players to make them as confident about tomorrow as they are about today. (Good point. We need to be adding talent and youth)
Trading up in the first round makes little sense. The talent will drop off considerably in this draft after the sixth pick. And there isn't much of a disparity between the talent from the seventh pick and the 50th pick. (I think this is a good and accurate point too)
What could make sense for the Bears is to trade down in the first round and acquire extra picks. Thanks to Phil Emery's moves with veterans, the Bears have enough flexibility that they are not locked into taking a player at one position. They can be reactive to the flow of the draft.
One need that should not be ignored early in the draft is defensive end. But there are enough good pass rushers that the Bears don't have to lock onto just one player. Take your pick from Whitney Mercilus, Courtney Upshaw, Shea McClellin, Nick Perry, Chandler Jones, Bruce Irvin, Vinny Curry or others. (Admittedly is more than one player who could help with this and a few will still be on the board after #19 has come and gone. It wouldn't be a shock to see us trade down)
The Bears need a draft like the Chiefs had in 2010 when they chose safety Eric Berry, running back Dexter McCluster, cornerback Javier Areas, guard Jon Asamoah, tight end Tony Moeaki and safety Kendrick Lewis.
And who was one of the architects of that draft? Phil Emery.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

If there was ever a time to pick up additional picks in two and three this would be the time. There may not be as much top end talent but there are a ton of very good picks between the middle of the first and the end of the fourth.
I've said before that I would not trade up any farther than #15 or so and even then it would need to be for a guy who was an absolute can't miss blue chipper. But I would trade down if I had some guys at DE pretty much bunched together and I could do just as well later in one or early two as I could at #19 and pick up a late second or early third.
I think the sheer number of guys Emery says he's identified makes anything possible and a trade down even likely. Gonna be and interesting evening come Thursday. Not very likely but what happens if we do pull off a trade for Forte for extra picks? Then it will really get nuts around here, LOL.

All the shits off the rounds in the first for impact players...

If anything lets see whats going on and be sure to make a move upwards.
I really dont know how Emery plays the game..

I'm all for trading down to cherry pick the 2nd round. But like Mo said gotta see how it breaks one way or the other. As long as we can get either/or a Konz, Zeitler, and perhaps a DT I'd sure as heck would be happy.

Wow I didn't realize that Emery was the brains behind that Chief's draft. That certainly was a heck of a draft.
I'm all for a trade down, if the 7 guys we have targeted in RD 1 are off the board and we good a deal in return.

I've been saying this for a bit, i'm definitely not averse to trading down. If trading down can land us 3 or even 4 picks in the top 50 then i think we should do it. WR, DT, DE, Safety or OL all in one hit. yes please. After the top 6 come off the board 7-50 arent that disimilar. just look at how the mocks are all over the place.
