You'd have to go with the Sean Payton defense and target the kicking leg. $5k per leg.

Agreed, there are limitations to any methodology employed. My point is that fixating on a position or two or even three makes you reach for players because of need. Most of the teams that are consistently in the playoffs aren't doing that. Sure, there are needs for every team, but the point is the put the best players on the field. Each player is an injury away from either getting on the field or being irrelevant.
The Bears are "who we thought they were" because they lack depth. BPA (granted it can/should be slightly modified) addresses that problem directly.

"If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain."

I think it should be BPA at positionS of need. Pick your top 5 need positions, and when it's your pick, you pick the player available that will have the most immediate impact. Save the "project" players for the final rounds.
I'm so smart all the time.

true...i just believe it should be a mixture of both.
Like right now...we are pretty solid at LB. And lets say we are targeting either Floyd or Mercilus @ 19. Our pick comes, and they are both off the board. And the BPA is a LB (lets say Donta Hightower).
Now...knowing we are pretty good at LB, do we pick BPA, or do we try and find a WR or DE we can use now who may not be as good as the LB, but pretty close anyway, AND fills a need position?
I think the first 2 rounds should be need, then BPA after that, with some need sprinkled in if possible

so you would take the 5 best DE at 19 rather then lets say the 2 best T or the second best WR?

Guess you missed the overall point i was making...basically that i would consider need as well as BPA. And if the BPA when we are on the clock is at a position thats NOT a need (like LB or RB) then no, i wouldnt take em.

If I understand Emerys draft strategy as he verbalized it - he is going for the person that would give us the fastest route to a SB. I think he phrased it something to the effect that the person that would make the biggest difference RIGHT NOW. If that was a position of need, then he would do that. If he thought it was a position not in need, but that the person would make enough of an upgrade over a present player as to give the most difference in performance in order to upgrade for a SB win now, he would do that.
So if I translate that into what i think it means, he would have to think any LB would provide a greater amount of performance upgrade RIGHT NOW in order to select that person over another position. If I read him right, I don't see a LB pick at this point in time. I don't think he can guarantee an upgrade over the likes of Urlacher or Briggs with a player selected.
Granted this says nothing about aging players, etc. I am just going by his draft philosophy that he shared.
I would say that based on this philosophy, QB, LB and RB are going to be hard to upgrade and he would avoid them.

Bears are always looking to save a few bucks. This would give us an opportunity to consolidate jersey costs.

Oh, and does anyone know whether or not any of them are related to that guy I always see on TV. You know TBA. Same last name maybe????
