McClellin to doubters: 'It puts a chip on my shoulder'

Shea McClellin arrived at Halas Hall for the first time Friday afternoon still elated after being selected in the first round by the Chicago Bearson Thursday night.
“I still have a little adrenaline left in me from last night,” he said. “My heart was beating fast. I thought this would be a great opportunity for me.”
McClellin is on a whirlwind tour this weekend. He will attend the team-sponsored draft party Friday night at Soldier Field. He will return for football in two weekends when the team hosts its rookie minicamp.
The first defensive player the Bears have selected in the first round since Tommie Harris in 2004 has high expectations for himself. Asked to compare himself to players that the public might be more familiar with, he named an exciting trio. (The guys who feel we always spend high picks for defense but never for offense should read this and when they're feeling pissed we didn't take a LT like Reiff remember that our last two 1st round picks, CWill and Carimi, were both college LT's and neither is playing LT now)
“Mike Vrabel just because of his versatility, able to play multiple positions,” McClellin said. “Brooks Reed, just because of the way he plays. As far as ends go, I think someone like Jared Allen. He plays hard and that’s the way I like to play.”
Like Allen (Idaho State), McClellin played his college ball in Idaho even though he was at the more powerful program at Boise State. Still, that leaves him with something to prove because the Broncos were not competing in a BCS conference against elite talent every Saturday. (Maybe because I live in the West but I just get a hoot out of all the experts out there who put BSU down because they don't play in a tough conference and then have to slink away with their tail between their legs when BSU goes out and beats Oklahoma, or Alabama or Georgia, etc. If they're so weak how come none of the "big boys" want to play them in a non-conference game.....lmao!!)
“To all the doubters, I am going to have to go out there and prove myself,” he said. “I’m used to that. I came from Boise State. We had to prove ourselves every week. That’s what I will have to do every day. Definitely, it puts a chip on my shoulder. I am used to it.”
McClellin shot down a report that surfaced in the last week that he suffered three concussions while in school. He told the Idaho Statesman the correct number was two. On Friday, he said this: “That bothered me a little. I don’t know where those reports came from. I had one concussion in 2010. I didn’t miss a game. I missed one practice. They kept me out. In 2009, it wasn’t really a concussion. I had concussion-like symptoms but I was sick before that so it was more precautionary. It was basically just one. I don’t know where three came from. I changed my helmet this last year and I have not had any problems since.”

I would submit that is an issue more to do with WHO we have picked at the position, rather than the position itself. Many teams have picked LTs who are actually playing LT. If you pick a LT that can play LT, then they play.

Mainly because WE, and that means ME too, let the writers, guru's and draft publications tell us who we SHOULD be taking. So we all develop our favorites among that bunch and debate then from the Senior Bowl through the Combine through their Pro-Days and then daily right up until draft eve.
Then of course when we don't take who everybody said we should, all the fans thought we should, and have the unmitigated gall to take a guy who was not even on anyone's should or want list there's bound to be an uproar of disappointment coupled with outright disbelief and the first thing everyone does is to play CYA and call it a poor or a risky pick. LMFAO!!!
Anyone who studied the prospects seriously knew who this kid was and what he could do. But because they didn't showcase him as a 4-3 DE (which is actually what he played at BSU) at the Senior Bowl all the draft publications had him slotted as strictly a 3-4 LB. And so it goes that any teams who played a 4-3 wouldn't be interested in him because he didn't fit...........according to them.
But according to coaches and scouts who saw him practice Senior Bowl week and then watched his game tape instead of how many fuckin' reps he did at the Combine they saw a high motor almost unstoppable "football player" who could gain or lose weight at will and could cover both LB and DE or even Long Snap or guard the Gatorade bucket if that's what you ASKED him to play for you.
I knew about him weeks ago but I was caught up in the same stuff everyone else was as far as who our top DE prospect should be and we debated all of them but him and of course that's exactly what the Bears wanted. No one knew that he was their guy until it happened. The Pats made a mad rush to move up to #21 thinking we'd take Jones and they leap frog the Pack for McClellin who also wanted him badly. But it was FU Bill, day late and a dollar short. Yeah we showed a lot of interest in Jones and you bought it. Phil figured you might and played it just the way you would have. Look one direction but throw in another.
I knew the Packers wanted him because they could use him at OLB opposite Matthews and force teams to pick their poison as far as who to double. Imagine those two coming at us from opposite ends of the line. I was really pissed about this until I began to find out that McClellin could and did actually play DE and I made a comment about his being a guy we should be looking at if Mercilus didn't pan out. I liked him another reason that being if we took him we could shtup the Packers like they did to us when they took Burnett in front of us two years ago. Well, well, well, so sorry "yellow pants" no double whammy for you.
I'll tell you how we actually benefited by this in two big ways. We now have an outside pass rushers with 4.6 speed that Aaron Rodgers will find really difficult to avoid or run away from especially when he has Pep chasing him from the right side and right into McClellins territory and if Melton keeps bringing it on then along with Paea there won't be much in the way of an escape route forward either....oops "nowhere to run to, da da da da da, nowhere to hide".
The second benefit will come from the fact we won't have to find a way to help Webb block the little mother frocker and that will help Cutler stay healthy.
I can think of a comment made in the far distant past by Bill Tobin when we made a similar unexpected move and drafted William Perry who in this case everyone was too fat to play DT in the NFL. Tobin faced some local criticism for the pick just like Emery is getting and he said, "you know what? I'd rather play with William Perry than against him." All I can say is we had the very same choice her too. Either Shea McClellin was gonna play for the Bears of he was gonna play against us. I think Phil just made a very wise choice.

lol, thats because since 2004, weve only HAD 5 First round picks, 3 years we had no picks at all:
DT, RB, na, TE, LT, na, na, LT
*sigh* looking back at our 1st round picks is very depressing:

Have to go all the way back to Urlacher in 2000 to find one that was a great pick. Most have been either garbage or non-existent. Here's hoping Emery can change that around.

I hope he does good but the worry is we drafted a situational de with our first rounder when we could of had the next Steve Hutchinson. Oh well but if they trott him out as every down guy like lovie did with mark Anderson kiss our rush defense good bye. If you remember my past posts I brought up these same concerns with mercilus. I guess that's why I liked coples so much. So pissed jets got two of my favorite players in this draft lol.
On a side note we going into the fourth round can go bpa. I don't doubt if jones falls to us we might also get him for de. This could free up izzy to move inside more on passing downs.

Oh screw the next Steve Hutchinson. How many SB did Seattle or Minny win with Hutch playing OG. Now how many have the Giants won with that set of pass rusher they have. OG's don't win you big games mo. Who was the MVP the last time the Bears won a SB. Mark Bortz or Richard Dent.
