No Help for Cutler is Just Offensive.......

No help for Cutler is just offensive

    Dan McNeil10:38 p.m. CDT, April 26, 2012

There's no reason to barbecue Phil Emery after the new GM's first few hours in the Bears' war room. I have no interest, however, in standing in line with anybody desirous of tossing rose petals at his feet. (No, you'd rather toss a few banana peels which by this column is what you're hoping to do since you seem to be calling this a major slip up and you're just waiting to prove it)

It sounds like Shea McClellin is a classic "tweener." Too small to be a full-time defensive end. Not a ferocious enough tackler to live up to the high standards set by Bears linebackers over the years. (Just one more schmuck who can't be bothered to read legit scouting reports, interviews with NFL personnel guys or watch his game tapes and relies on what he reads in PFW to for info to write this column)

Another project. At a time when the championship window is closing. (Hoo boy, looks more to me like we've been jimmying it open wider since Emery arrived)

Maybe McClellin will be the perfect tonic for a Chicago pass rush that was spotty last season. Maybe the 6-3, 260-pounder from Caldwell, Idaho, and Julius Peppers will become the NFC's version of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis before the Colts went from a Super Bowl team to being first on the clock.

I'm open minded. ( If this is what you call open minded what do you write when you're not?)

It just wears me out that Bears hierarchy, whomever is pulling the strings, doesn't accept that the NFL is, and has been, video game football. The road to the big game in early February is paved only by an offense that rolls up points so fast it makes your head spin. (Tell that to Tom Coughlin and the Giants while you hand Bill Belicheck and Mike McCarthy they're consolation prizes....what?????, no awards for second place for their video game offenses?)

I wanted a big guy Thursday night when Emery made the 19th selection in the first round, but I wanted one whose jersey number begins with a 6 or a 7. Stanford's David DeCastro, the highest rated guard in the draft, was still on the board. Iowa tackle Riley Reiff also was waiting to hear his name called. (There's a 6'6" 300lb transsexual named "Big Boy Roy" who advertises his services (and below the waist bragging rights) in the Denver Westword. I could email you the Westword classifieds if you like)

But here in Smashmouth City, it looks like Lovie Smith got his wish. What happened to the rumor the war room was going to be smaller? (It was! Why do you think you weren't invited?)

The Bears' defense can bring all the "woof woof" it wants in 2012, but if Jay Cutler spends ample time in a horizontal position again, it won't matter. (This is crap is getting really )

I hope McClellin is who Emery and Smith think he is. Meanwhile, those who have been driving the "Peppers has no help" charge are making me dizzy. ( Then stop trying to put a negative "spin" on this pick)

Yes, Peppers played on a bum knee much of last season. And he does have moments where he looks every bit deserving of the $42 million he was guaranteed in the contract he signed in March 2010.

Being the best pass rusher on the Bears, however, is a tall midget award. Has been since the '90s. (Isn't this a just the same as a comparison of your ego to your brain?)

Peppers' loyalists, anchored zealously by my media brethren, point to his lack of "support" from the enigmatic Israel Idonije and other supporting cast members as reason for the disappearing act.

Ray Edwards, who was "Robin" to Jared Allen's "Batman" in Minnesota, signed a deal with Atlanta before the 2011 season. Allen led the NFL in sacks with 22 last year. Peppers has 19 in two seasons with the Bears.

I eagerly await more production from Peppers now that he has help. As I'm sure Cutler nervously awaits somebody to keep guys like that from scrambling his eggs for a fourth straight year. (See how little you know? Jay takes his eggs "over easy".....and his bacon crisp. Check with Kristin if you don't believe me)

Emery has two more chances Friday to find some help for what remains a very suspect offensive line. If the Bears can't keep their quarterback vertical, all the pass rush in the world is moot. (Only two??? Did we trade away the other four picks while I was sleeping)

Teams that consistently win 13-10 don't play in the final game of the season. (If they win all of them that way they do. See you don't even know NFL rules)

Special contributor Dan McNeil hosts "The McNeil and Spiegel Show" weekdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on WSCR-AM 670. (Well I be damned! I thought he hosted "The Breakfast Club" from the Palmer House weekdays from 6:00 am - 9:00 am. Oh....you say that was Don McNeil. Well not much difference, Don didn't know jack shit about Bears football either)

Spot-on Soul. DE and upping our consistency to get to the QB was simply a bigger impact move for us. We have two spots we can add to on offense; WR and OL -- both of which are deeper than the DE spot and both of which have an absolute ton of guys sitting out there to like. The DE cupboard, on the other hand, is already pretty barren. Emery made the right move in position of target, arguing about the player is kind of asinine at this point, and is something that will need time to find out.

Another round of "expert" advice from "Who the Fuck" is Dan McNeil. We're one round into this draft after having spent our last two first round picks on LT's (who aren't playing LT) and $25 mil in offseason money to improve the offense and this is what this asshat has to say?

I'm am up to my gonads in daily "whatta we gonna do about pass blocking" whining and the level is rising fast. Why don't we let the draft play itself out and then see where we stand. Last year there were 5 or 6 OT's taken in round one and this year there were two!!!!!

Has it dawned on anyone yet that these guys may not be all that f'n good!!!!!!

I personally would have preferred that the Bears had taken Whitney Mercilus, but I'm also fine with Shea McClellin because unlike Mercilus, he is a three-down five technique DE who also has a mean streak about him. He comes from a better football program at Boise State than Mercilus did at Illinois. I look forward to seeing McClellin thrive in our defense, and I don't think he's undersized to play the position. He's actually a little bigger than Dwight Freeney. If he puts up numbers like Freeney's, I say fuck whoever criticizes him for his size because unlike with a woman when it comes to a man, size doesn't really matter that much if you're a DE.

Dan McNeil gets paid to play Devil's Advocate, soul, and as such, he's going to be against everything the Bears decide to do. The harshest critics of the Chicago Bears are the members of the Chicago media for the Tribune and the Sun-Times (or Trent Dilfer and Sean Salisbury, the latter formerly with ESPN, where Dilfer is currently employed). It makes for good reading and getting fans pumped up about their team. If we didn't have this kind of debating going on in public, life would be boring, and then where would we be?

I hate that article. I've had it up to here with all the negative crap being said and written about an O-line that was hit hard last year by injuries. I can't stand this pessimistic crap. Our GM isn't stupid. He assessed what we have on the roster. If he didn't draft anyone for the O-line its because he didn't see any players in this draft that would be an upgrade or that were a priority over our other needs. We will be better this year!

Well he can just STFU because James Brown just bugalooed in the Bears door.

    JAMES BROWN OT, Troy

    • 2011 GRADE: 5.8 D HT: 6-4 WT: 312

Possesses a longer, leaner frame with a little bubble to his lower half and good length. Has the ability to continue to fill out and get bigger. Needs some time as a prospect. Is really raw with his footwork, stands a bit upright into his stance, -plays only from a two point stance- and doesn't showcases any resemblance of a kick slide toward the edge. Looks content to simply slide shuffle to the corner and get narrow with his footwork, almost banging his feet together into the process. However, is a natural athlete with good range off the edge and can bend at the knees and keep his base down when trying to slide but lacks ideal anchor strength on contact because he will get upright on his punch. However, he can sink his hips and when he does stay low he extends his arms well demonstrating the ability to be a solid anchor player. Will also get stronger with time and play with better leverage as he learns the position. Is a long armed kid who can gain leverage as well. Nevertheless, too often keeps his hands down by his waist in pass protection and isn't real compact into contact. Generates some pop at the point, but this is an area he will improve with further development. Takes good angles into contact, is a patient kid who doesn't get caught lunging into contact much and showcase natural change of direction skill/fluidity when trying to re-direct off a counter and mirror laterally.

Possesses "plus" short area quickness off the snap in the run game, but again struggles with pad level into contact. Too often fails to generate any kind of leverage when trying to create a push and will fall off blocks quickly. Is at his best as a move guy when asked to get into blocks quickly, extend and seal on contact. Looks quick/coordinated on reach and slid down blocks as well. Routinely is able to stay engaged through contact on the move and get his feet around defenders in order to seal. Isn't overly heavy handed however, but that should improve as well, as he becomes more offensive tackle than athlete.

Impression: Has an intriguing skill set and the frame to get bigger. His body type says offensive tackle in the NFL to me and not guard. But he needs to physically get a bit bigger to play either spot. Looks like a higher upside/developmental guy who could be worth a mid round pick and if he's willing to put in the time could mature into a possible starter.

I've been a bit dizzied by all the crap slung McClellins way as well. However, I will say this, David DeCastro has been "my guy" for months and I STILL think he would have gone a long way toward making this team (offense) much better. Sometimes it only takes one or two new pieces to allow you to shift other pieces and make the whole unit better. Therefore, I would have likely picked DeCastro without another thought if I had been making the decisions, but I wasn't, and as much as I think I know, I'm confident that it would not fill a thimble compared to what Emery knows.

HOWEVER, (note the all caps for the however) I do NOT DISLIKE the selection of McClellin. I think of all the DE's, he would have been my pick as well. I'm really getting tired of hearing him called a "tweener". Why is he a tweener? He is the SAME SIZE as Mercilus and Vinny Curry, both were very prominent names that many people on here were promoting for the same position. So why is McClellin a tweener" and they are not? He's actually TALLER than Melvin Ingram and only 4 Lbs lighter...4 FREAKIN POUNDS! Is Ingram a "tweener"? Where is this shit coming from? He's also FASTER than all of these guys!

This kid is a freakin football player that has the flexibility and talent to play from a variety locations. Flexibility that some of these other guys don't have. Do you realize the benefit that gives Marinelli in terms of screwing with opposing offenses? I've also heard this rumor that perhaps Emery actually has some sinister plan to jetison Lovie when he gets the opportunity and this kid was selected to begin the transition to a 3-4. While anything is possible, I think these folks should consider the reality that this kid is every bit as good with better physical attributes than some of the other DE's that were being projected and that those same physical attributes could very easily make him an outstanding DE in a 4-3.

I posted a couple of times in the last few weeks how crazy the mocks seemed to be this year with the rising and falling of players far more frequent than past years. I'm begining to think that the rational for this is that the media are so rushed to beat all the various competitors that no one is really taking the time to research their subject matter anymore. If they did, McClellin would have been there the whole time.
The Greatest form of revenge is MASSIVE success.
