Being 6'3 I I wonder if there's any chance this kid packs on some muscle and switches to LB.....

The guy is already 220 and almost entirely muscle. I can't imagine he can get much bulkier than what he already is. But as a safety he can really put the hurt on some wr's.

I still think this pick was a reach. If he wasn't slated to go before the fourth or fifth rounds, why did we take him in the third? We could have drafted Peter Konz!

How would Konz impact this team? We are set at c for a few years and ja re-signed his shitty understudy. You could make a case for ol help like sanders or Massie. And we need a dt but don't really know who is available. But s at least a need. If this guys injuries are in the past you can bet he will see action the way our s get injured. The s class is weak so reaching on a guy who didn't play in 2011 maybe he was a well hidden secret

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. He's an inch taller and 10-15lbs heavier than Conte and has CB speed. He's was ranked more like a 4-5th round pick but I think injuries had more to do with that than talent.
This guy isn't surprise pick as far as I'm concerned. Not only did the Bears go out to meet with him but he's Paea's former teammate so my guess is that their eye on this kid a year ago. Bit risky taking a Safety here when we still have needs on both lines we didn't address in two but he's a good pick.
Somebody needs to work with him to teach him how to hit and hurt without hurting himself though. The kind of injuries he's incurred came from the way he hits not because he's brittle. What I see is another potential "assassin" but this one weighs 220lbs and will be at SS or FS.
I think he's a bit under the radar like Conte because of his injuries and lack of tape on him at Safety. At this point I think he's better than any other DB on the board and I don't see anyone who went after him I'd cry over losing. Youth, size, speed, instincts and football savvy plus he could possibly match up against bigger WR's in the redzone as a CB.
What I see Phil doing is not only adding talent both in FA and the draft but adding talent we don't already have on the roster.
In FA we get;
1) The "Beast that Jay wanted for his #1 WR
2) A starting caliber QB
3) A power back whose made a career out of finding the endzone against goal line defenses
4) Some pro-bowl level ST guys to replace key players we lost who can also role play on offense
5) An experienced cover-2 type LB who can push Roach or back Briggs
6) An experienced cover-2 LCB to push Jennings or back him
In the draft we get;
1) A high motor 3 down 4.6/40 DE to pair with Pep and replace Izzy
2) Another "aircraft carrier" WR with huge hands who can catch and score in the redzone
3) Another Safety who's the size of a small LB and runs a CB like 4.4/40
Like it or not guys Phil upgraded this team nicely and not by adding to what we already had but by adding what we didn't have. Somehow life seems a little different this year.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

We may be set for a couple of years with the contract extension to Garza, but we need someone with the potential of being the next Olin Kreutz to be drafted to take Garza's place. Who are you talking about that Jerry Angelo re-signed his shitty understudy? The only player I know of on the line who could possibly fill in as the OC is Spencer, and yes, he sucks. He wasn't re-signed - he was SIGNED to a free agent contract fresh from Seattle.
We need a DT as bad if not worse than another damn safety. I'm seriously getting over drafting safeties every year. One day, I hope we have all of our safety positions covered for a change.
