The Big Picture; Who We Got and Who We Didn't Get Debate Place.......

OK, I'll sponsor up one spot where we can look at all of the picks in combination and evaluate them, what we covered, what we didn't cover, and how we look at Emery's first draft.

I'll start by saying he approaches his draft in a completely different manner than Angelo did. Emery looks for what we don't have and finds guys to fill that role. Angelo seemed to focus on who he liked with less regard for whether or not he'd be an upgrade for the team overall.

1) I like the McC pick. We got what we didn't have. A LDE who can rush and pressure QB's.

2) Another "aircraft carrier" WR who may take a while to develop into a good all around WR but for now he'll be another scary redzone target and a guy who knows how to catch back shoulder throws. Jay will love him.

3) Hardin is our solution for how to cover big fast TE's. Wright doesn't match up well with the Jermichael Finley's of the NFL. He may also be able to play CB in the red zone against monster WR's.

4) An Aaron Hernandez type HBack who can catch and block. Not an inline TE or a hybrid weenie like Fleener. This kid will give us another option out of the slot who can run block and be a good 3rd down receiver. Compares to the Chiefs Tony Moeaki as well.

5) Zip

6) A CB who doesn't play zone or tackle all that well but has decent size and straight line speed. Probably a PS project if he even makes the team. Somebody for Hoke and Byrd to groom I guess.

Well let the debates, the gripes and/or the wailing and gnashing of teeth mix with the abundant joy and have at it guys.

I read in Benji's thread on Frey that he was, indeed, a decent zone player. I might have read it wrong, but I could have sworn that was what it said.

Just a few things to bat around:

1) McC at LDE: If he is a "every down" DE is he going to be big and strong enough to set the edge?

2) Was it not stated that Emery was behind a bit w/his scouts for a full analysis? And if it was does it explain what appears to be swinging for the fences?

3) Do the players acquired lend themselves to believe that the groundwork is being laid even more perhaps for a post-Lovie regime?

4) There wasn't a swing tackle or developmental center chosen (7th round notwithstanding)

Would've liked to get a guard at least. With all the depth at that position in this draft, we should've gotten one at least.

These reports don't agree with one another half the time anyway. Bottom line is they see something in the kid they like. I wonder what Chris Harris's said when he was drafted in the 7th round yet he became a pretty good football player.

I think this is an excellent question, particularly in regards to McClellin. It's one thing I've been thinking about as well. Yes they intend to use him as a DE right now, but if Lovie goes after this year, maybe we go to a 3-4 defense with the next coach. In which case, Shea could move to linebacker and fit his projection. I like that kind of versatility he brings.

Well his weight can bounce up and down like a kangaroo so if they need him to be at least a 260lb DE then that's what he'll be. We saw Melton go from a 260lb DE to a ripped 295lb UT after they put him through a weight program so my guess is McC will get much the same. I'll bet the kid eventually plays around 270lbs.

He's an Urlacher type kid. Kind of a freak who could play anywhere and be a good football player but like Urlacher they'll spot him where he's best. To start with that'll be at LDE.

Still not sold on the 1st round 3-4 DE/OLB who is now all of a sudden a 4-3 DE. Guess we won't know until 3-4 years down the line when we look at the guys we passed up. I asked a guy on friday about Boise and how they played, he said his wife watches all there games, so he does also. Said the guy was good but nothing special(iho) and remembered him playing a lot of OLB(one of his coaches also mentioned him playing a pseudo CB). Just not sure how this guy will work, but I'll hold off condemnation until we see him on the field. LIke 670 said on Friday, if he's a Bauzine type you'll know it day one of practice.
Didn't see HBack/TE as a need position here, but I was all for BPA in this draft, so you won't see me complaining about that pick, unless there was a higher rated player out there; w/how this draft went I'm betting there was. But if the guy sees time on the field and is productive I'm cool.
Liked the Jefferies pick, we definately needed anothe WR w/Knox hurt, and we got one
Didn't mind the S pick god knows w/Lovie as coach we have to draft at least 1 a year. And he seemed the bets of the bunch, just hope he leaves his arm and hand inj's in college.
The fact that we didn't grab one OL to this point disgusts me; this coaching staff is highly over rating one of the worst OL's in the league last year; and the past several.

We have essentially gone with drafting on an "as-needed" basis rather than BPA. Is that a bad thing? Probably not. This year, we had so many holes to fill that this was almost the only way to go in terms of drafting players. We took care of a lot of needs in free agency and with trades, but the draft did the rest of the grunt work, no question about it.
