    Examining Isaiah Frey

Bio box: Nevada cornerback Isaiah Frey

    Round 6, No. 184

By Brad Biggs, Tribune reporter 7:48 p.m. CDT, April 28, 2012

On the field: Frey was a durable performer in school and first-team All-WAC last season after leading the team with five interceptions. He has good size, and that is one of the first things you look for with cornerbacks in the Cover-2 scheme.

Upside: Frey has good size and has shown a knack for being a playmaker, but if he sticks it will be at the bottom of the roster.

Downside: Late-round picks face an uphill battle, and the Bears have a host of veterans in the mix here. Still, this could be a blessing for Frey as they need to develop young players at the position. He needs to transition to playing zone defense as he played almost exclusively man in college

    Inside the Bears

Isaiah Frey of Nevada selected in sixth round by Bears

By Sean Jensen on April 28, 2012 3:32 PM | 3 Comments | No TrackBacks

In the sixth round, the Bears selected Nevada cornerback Isaiah Frey. At least from NFL analysts and pundits, Frey didn't foster a whole lot of buzz or excitement. CBS Sports had him ranked as the 453rd best prospect, the 48th best at his position.

But, Frey has what every other Bears draft pick has: size and speed.

He's 5 foot 10, 190 pounds, and he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds. Those are impressive numbers. He led the Wolf Pack with five interceptions, and he was named a preseason All-American by Sports Illustrated. But, he wasn't overwhelming enough to get an invite to the NFL Combine or many post-season all-star games.

A three-year starter, he led his conference with 21 pass break ups last season.

April 28, 2012 Bears choose Frey in sixth round

By: Larry Mayer | Last Updated: 4/28/2012 3:53 PM

The Bears selected Nevada cornerback Isaiah Frey in the sixth round of the draft (184th overall).

The 5-11, 190-pounder was a three-year starter and four-year contributor at Nevada, where he registered 141 tackles, seven interceptions, seven tackles-for-loss, one sack and two forced fumbles in 51 games.
“We felt like with Isaiah that we’ve got the most skilled corner at the back end of the draft,” said general manager Phil Emery. “Our scouts and coaches worked very hard on that back end of the draft of those skilled players, the corners and safeties.”

Last season as a senior, Frey was named first-team all-WAC after tying for the FBS lead with 21 pass breakups and recording a career-high five interceptions.

Not much to say here except his only shot at the roster is gonna be through ST. He's got enough size and speed to possibly stick around on the PS and get some coaching. Frey = Joshua Moore.

That was my first thought, too. Frey is Joshua Moore 2.0. Since Moore was a complete bust and didn't see any action on the field there are chances Frey will end up just like him. Sorry to say that but Frey and McCoy are wasted draft picks we could've used for OT/DT.

I think the two guys we signed as UDFA's are probably as good as any player we would have gotten at OT or DT in the 6th or 7th anyway lb. By that point in time you can just about toss the names into a hat and pick one and come up with a guy who has about the same talent level as the next.

Emery said he told his scouts to focus on productive playmakers who fit our scheme and the guys who graded out best were those two. They must have had James Brown rated pretty close to these guys too because they went out and got him right away so it made little difference how they got him.

Back to Frey. I think that he will be a good, solid backup corner. If he can learn to play zone, that's great; otherwise, he'll be about as useful to us as Zach Bowman was.
