    You be the Commish

With all these players claiming the NFL is not doing enough to protect the players safety, and with all these fans complaining about the "pussification" of the league... What rules, measures would you put into action to both keep the players safety in mind and get fans to stop complaining about the league killing the game by turning it into the National Flag Football League?

I would change not a damn thing. Like smoking people know the risks so it just has to be known to them. Difference between smoking and playing football is your getting paid while when you smoke you are paying. I guarantee you even with known risks they will all still play cause if you have that talent plus the $$$ that follows no way you skip out on that

I wonder how much focus is being put into the technology of creating safer helmets and pads.

First of all, I would be more subjective in what penalties needed to be divvied out if I were the league office, Benji. There are some instances that a helmet on helmet collision cannot be helped, and in that case, the league should show some degree of leniency on players who, by accident, accidentally strike an opposing player on their helmet in what would amount to an unavoidable collision.

Second, with that being said, there are those players out there who are out-and-out headhunters, and as such, should be punished when they hit someone. The league knows who these players are, and it's apparent what these players' intentions are strictly by the way they approach a given situation on the field of play. No two players in the league are worse about this than James Harrison and Brandon Meriweather. These players need to be punished for playing with fire because sometimes, playing with matches can burn all parties involved in more ways than one.

Yeah, they need to focus on improving the protective gear. The technology is out there they just need to apply it. Mo is correct when he says that they need to accept the risks of their chosen profession but that doesn't mean that every effort shouldn't be made to provide as much protection against injury as possible.

I see a real battleground developing depending on how lawsuits like the one Dave Duerson's family has instigated go. Now there may be a similar issue with Junior Seau. I hope it does lead to better gear for the players. I think they have a right to expect that where the technology exists to provide it. But I also believe there should be a limit to NFL liability in this as well.

Any NASCAR or Indy driver knows and accepts the risks he or she takes and there is only so much you can do to protect a driver against injury when a stock car hits a wall at 180 mph or more. For open wheel Indy Racers the problem is even greater. There are inherent risks in these sports and the participants have to accept a certain amount of that themselves. That's the choice they make when they make it their profession.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

Player saftey is an excuse to take defense out of the league to cater to a larger audience who dosent understand or appreciate the game

    Ive got a crazy idea..

Make these guys wear mouthpeices! That would easily cut concussions at least by half

And make them buckle their chinstraps...who woulda thought

And the other equiptment they dong wear or dont wear right

Problem solved...but thats just too easy

Until they figure out a way to keep their brains from slamming against the inside of their skulls, improving gear will only do so much. There is no way to simultaneously make the game safer for the players while keeping fans happy with a certain level of violence.

The game is violent. Throw in the mouth guards and I'd come down hard on UNNECESSARY hits. I'm not talking these gray area was it his shoulder or not hits, I'm talking like way way way late or equally way too early hits or stuff that's not needed. Stuff that Meriweather did/does is stupid and that shit should be fined, but otherwise I'd keep football intact and stay away from this flag football, getting rid of kickoffs, bullshit outta the conversation.

I would take a two prong aproach:

    1. Spend some of that NFL money to do some real research. The sport of racing actually spent real money to research the HANS device, roll cages and helmets. That and making their use madatory made a huge difference. The NFL talks a good game, but then they don't puth the money there.

    2. HEAVILY penalize the cheap shots. People trying to take others out or really trying to hurt them. This devalues the game.

I don't want to see the hard hitting go away. I just want to know that the players will be safe after the hits. That's what new safety equipment would do. Keep the hard hits, but take away the cheap shots at knees, etc that are meant to hurt players, and do some real research on protecting the biggest points of liability - head, knee, back.
