    Sports Illustrated believes in Jeffery

    Sports Illustrated believes in Jeffery
    By: Larry Mayer

Sports Illustrated has selected Bears second-round pick Alshon Jeffery, a wide receiver from South Carolina, as one of 12 NFL rookies capable of making an immediate impact this season.

"The five wide receivers drafted ahead of him—Justin Blackmon (Jacksonville), Michael Floyd (Arizona), Kendall Wright (Tennessee), A.J. Jenkins (San Francisco), Stephen Hill (New York Jets)—all step into quarterback situations that may hamper them,” writes Sports Illustrated.

“With the Bears, Jeffery will catch passes from a surefire gunslinger in Jay Cutler.

“Jeffery's production at South Carolina last year took a hit partly because of some QB turnover. Chicago just got a dominant No. 1 in Brandon Marshall, and have some speedy, quick options in Johnny Knox and Devin Hester. Concerns about Jeffery's speed and burst won't be an issue working against No. 2 and No. 3 corners in the red zone.”

The other 11 rookies chosen by Sports Illustrated are Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, Browns running back Trent Richardson, Colts tight end Coby Fleener, Lions tackle Riley Reiff, Steelers guard David DeCastro, Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones, Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram, Cowboys cornerback Morris Claiborne and Buccaneers safety Mark Barron.

Jeffery, who entered the draft following his junior season, caught 183 passes for 3,042 yards and 23 touchdowns in 40 career games at South Carolina. He and Fleener are the only second-round picks on Sports Illustrated's list; the other 10 are first-round selections.

Jeffery had a breakout sophomore season in 2010, catching 88 passes for 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns. His production dipped last year to 49 receptions for 762 yards and eight TDs when South Carolina employed more of a run-oriented offense.

Jeffery's 3,042 yards are a school-record and the second most in SEC history.

Why? Because of Sam Bradford? I think the logic behind not placing him in that list is because he is going to be looked upon as a project player due to the fact that he played at FCS school (Appalachian State). I'm sure he can be taught a few things, but I think that the Bears got a far better value in Jeffery, who is a polished and solid receiver for someone coming out of college.

I'm just saying, they forgot him. But they seem to think he's the next T.O.

Shit, I totally forgot that Quick was drafted at #33 by the Rams. Sorry for the horrible analysis. I'll try to do my homework a little better next time.

Did I just read that pro football scouts believe that Brian Quick is going to be the next Terrell Owens? That sounds preposterous to say the least. Owens was an elite level talent - one of the greatest wide receivers who ever played the game. Brian Quick is a very raw wide receiver who needs to learn a lot about his craft before I'll say that he's on T.O.'s level.

On the other hand, T.O. did come from a small university just about two hours south of where I live (University of Tennessee-Chattanooga). Maybe that's where they're drawing their comparisons between Quck and T.O.

I'm pretty sure the thinking is good size, good hands, great possession receiver. Hopefully without all the drama.

It would take a lot to be as melodramatic as T.O., Randy Moss, and Brandon Marshall. To change the subject for a brief moment, I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop on Brandon Marshall. That guy has had more off-the-field issues with domestic disturbances and fights at clubs than just about anyone else in the league outside of Adam "Pac-Man" Jones. So far, as far as I know of, he hasn't been punished for his transgressions, and I don't think he will for the latest incident he had either up at a nightclub in New York or with the domestic dispute he had with his wife (depending on who tells it and who/what you want to believe).

They very neatly forgot Shea McClellin too. Can't admit the both of the Bears first picks might be impact players could they? I got a chuckle over this one but holy hell would break loose if they didn't give a nod to a Pats pick.

Chandler Jones was the Pats consolation prize after we scooped McC, the guy they really wanted, up in front of them. So instead of it being McC with that Pats he was just unfortunate enough to have been drafted by the Bears and we can't grant them two top picks can we even if that's exactly what we got!! LOL

Gotta love the politics involved with this. The highly esteemed Pats draft machine get no impact players but the Bears and their rookie GM get two!!!!!! Oh my God..........we can't have that. Cross McClellin's name from that list and put Jones in quick. hahaha

Hell yeah there's a political factor involved with this! The Patriots are the "it" team in the league right now, and of course, according to the media, anything they has to be good, right? That's a bunch of bullshit. They drafted Brandon Meriweather in the first round and he turned into a bust. So much for being the "perfect franchise."

Chandler Jones has bust written all over him. He missed a huge chunk of his senior season at Syracuse due to what was only reported as a "lower body injury" and thus only had four sacks if memory serves me correct. Jones' draft position with the Patriots is based on mere speculation that he has the potential to be a solid defensive end in the NFL, not based on any tangible evidence, whereas McClellin played healthy during his career at Boise State. McClellin will be just as big of a factor for the Bears as Alshon Jeffery will, but won't get the recognition because he is a defensive end and Jeffery is an aircraft carrier of a wide receiver - and we all know that offensive players generally get all the publicity.

Four sacks???? That "lower body injury" was a kick in the nuts.

He's damn lucky he has a sack left at all.
